dillinger four were an influential band, it's not surprising green day ripped this riff yet some of you seem to think it's just some random coincidence of some random band, and people aruging american idiot is better? i can't change your opinion but come on.. really?! but midwestern songs of the americas is a piece of punk rock history. D4 wrote this first, green day ripped it
Okay, ONE part sounds like what Green Day did on "American Idiot". Big deal. Everything is derived from something else, people. Hell, Black Sabbath's first 2 albums could've easily have been blues albums if you go strictly by chord progressions. There's only so many ways you can pick notes and finger chords on your fretboard. Get over it now, PLEASE! It was released 7 years ago, for fuck's sake. Then again, people still bitch about Metallica's "St. Anger" (don't start on THAT now).
There's only so many power chords... You're bound to run into something similar someday. Do the lyrics have the same melody, not really. Same vocal register, nope. Are the drums the same. Not a chance. Both songs are great. They aren't sell outs. Stop whining.
"I don't think your bad people I just think that you're asthetic, is horrible"
the song only sounds similar because they are both the same genre and play some of the same few chords. Billie Joe is friends with Dillinger Four and he DID do a collaboration with them for the EP Dillinger Four / Pinhead Gunpowder in 2000. Billie Joe came up with American Idiot by himself as he stated in his interview. for the comment below, american idiot was not considered the best song on that album boulevard of broken dreams, wake me up when september ends and Holiday were just as popular
I don't listen to new Greenday because they seem to only be going through the motions now. I guess it's only natural due to their amount of success but I feel like their new albums totally lack any emotion compared to dookie. Sure, the music is good but it feels like it's just plain; notes put together to sound well and nothing more. There's none of their originality and enjoyment from before.
Ripping off a song is just an other example of how they don't really care for their own music anymore.
@iMovT american idot made them popluar a second time. the people that like dookie quit liking them. when american idiot came out they had a new generation of fans.
yeah, i think d4 travelled to the year 2004 to steal the main parts of doublewhiskeycokenoice from green days american idiot. then travelled back to 1989 to releas it as their track. all hail to the time travelling d4!!!
Dude, I don't think this sucks at all, in fact, I LOVE IT! I moved from MPLS long ago, but I'm old enough to have seen the D4 when there were only three members. I think you nailed the soul of this song!
well thank you sir that means alot coming from someone who actually knows what there talking about, as proven by your statements below, and while were on the subject, what the hell happened to Hopeless Records? not to sound like a whiny punk kid or anything but they released this quintessential piece in modern punk, and now they have All Time Low!? I mean Come on!!!
I guess Hopeless Records actually lost all hope. At the end of the day, a record company, even a cool one, exists to make money, and that tends to cause them to make unfortunate decisions like signing Hot Topic poster boys with no soul to speak of. Thankfully, you and countless others smell a rat and aren't afraid to say so. If that's being a whiny little kid than I guess I am too, albeit a 35 year old whiny little kid...
WRONG. no, it came out before. you are obviously not the "in crowd." It was on Green Days 1989 bootleg "Monkey's Butthole." yuo should study punx music moar.
Actually, the riff in question (used only once in this song) can be traced back to the 60s. If you want to get really technical abbout it - I'm fairly certain Green Days is a half step down - which makes it different chords, Which makes it not the same.
Wrongo, jackass. A chord progression is a chord progression. ZZ Top got sued for exactly the same thing. Learn music theory before you make an assessment....
learn music history before you make your statement. Also, ZZ Top was sued for turning a main riff into a main riff for their own gain. This is a case of an incidental riff being turned into a main riff. It's a riff that's been used multiple times over the course of rock n' roll history. Unfortunately, the most well known instance of the riff is "American Idiot."
I've had enough theory thrown at me to last three lifetimes, I don't think I need any more.
Music History? I've been collecting records since you were born, and if you've actually had "enough theory thrown at me to last three lifetimes" you'd know enough chord theory to disprove your argument. Sounds like someone needs to go back to school.
If you've actually been collecting records since I was born, you should have at least three of the nuggets collections. Then you've probably got enough songs alone to disprove your notion that it matters.
That's correct, sir. It's not so much that "it matters", I'm merely combating the popular notion that the most rudimentary aspects of music, i.e. chord progressions, are merely semantics. There's rhyme and reason as to why the work, and studying those reasons can only help to make one a better musician. While I realize that this is the antithesis of punk music (which is why I love it so) it stands to reason that embracing knowledge can only make one better at their craft.
Totally and completely agreed. Thanks for the back and forth and coming to an understandable resolution. I hate it when these arguments dissolve into name-calling. Thanks for keeping it intelligent. I respect that.
@TheAbsolutionHowl just curious, do you have a specific example in mind? Seems to be a debate here, all sides lacking actual evidence. I would say its a toss up. Maybe both punker bands love the same song from the 60's o.o
yeah. If a band steals something, they will and do get sued. I'm pretty sure it's all happy families now. There isn't an infinite number of chords. Especially in punk.
