When I consider all the years during which I was unaware of this spectacular voice, I could weep with regret! Never have I heard a more gorgeous sound than this magnificent basso. Thank you for sharing these postings of the great Shtokolov with us.
Stunning performance! Bravo! Right up there with Lisitsian and Chaliapin! Bravo. Never before heard of him,but look forward to hearing much more of him. This went right to my favourites. Besides having a glorious voice-he is also a great singer. Thank you again K.
... I'm going nuts trying to remember who else I've seen do this. (Was it Jose Carreras? No, that's the Luisa Miller aria.) Must be on my "Russian Opera at the Bolshoi" DVD??
Yes, the aria is sung by Aleksei Krivchenya on that DVD. He was a long-time member of the Bolshoi and a fine bass in his own right, specializing in roles such as the MIller, Farlaf, and Varlaam. But he lacked a truly top-rank voice, and therefore I give Shtokolov's version pride of place here.

Virtually a perfect voice. Better than Ivan Petrov, IMHO. But as Petrov was principle bass at the Bolshoi, he got many more accolades.
