They would get inside of the archers' minimum range and engage in hand to hand combat. After being mostly defeated, the remaining 300 spartans fought harder, and were finally defeated by Persain War elephants.

@ale03000 they won but in the next battle It took time to mast the greek armies( greeks were not a nation then but divided into city states) and it was a time period when the spartans were not allowed to fight due to their tradition a festival of shorts so they sent 300 spartans their slaves and other small greek unites to hold of the Persians they did the greek army was assembled and the persian empite crushed.

Of course, the Spartans picked a great spot to defend in Thermopylae . The Phalanx formation is impenetrable unless flanked by sides, which was not available to Persians until the Spartans were supposedly betrayed by a Greek comrade.

And all this was because of the Ionian revolt, Persians didn't want to kill all of Greece, they were just pissed off that some kingdoms they ruled in Greece were revolting due to Anti-Persian sentiment, but i doubt Greeks would of became 'slaves'... Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid/Persian Empire, abolished all slavery and was one of the first rulers to respect human rights, so what were the Spartans fighting... Leonidas just didn't want to loose his throne or hold on his people.

#2 If the position had been held for even slightly longer, the Persians might have had to retreat for lack of a bunch of stuff in addition to the great soldier losses. what I am saying is look at the odds, I don't think you look at the Persians as the great men both before and now!!!! and the sparitans only killed 10,000

but the reason only 10,000 is good not only because only 300 men killed this is it gave the rest of greece time to prepare for the attack

then they defeated the persians in a ship battle and drove them out of greece
