@thebandcoca same thing happened to me a couple of years ago... still a lot of music from him.... don't know how i missed him while he was still here...
this is such a great, spooky song and the arrangement is so perfect and spare- I much prefer smith's produced work jus because he is such a great arranger in addition to being a great songwriter, and then there's his voice which is so expressive. Each passing year makes his suicide all the more sad - it would be nice for him to be around, even if he got better and lost his mojo-
Constant chord changes, lyrics that were painful but uplifting, and most of all, just his love for words, is what makes Smith sooooo awesome!! "Aint no comparison to Harrison", Elliott's one of a kind!
i like all four. but comparing one to the other doesn't increase or decrease my enjoyment of the music on an individual basis. Its not a competition. Elliot was influenced by the beatles and from the sounds of it so were are the shins. if you want to wax intellectual i would say that lennon is equally great at expressing emotions using music. Bob dylan was also a big influence on elliot.
No need for comparisons, Elliot was influenced by the Beatles. and if you know your music its evident. figure 8 is reminiscent of a lot of Beatles stuff. the chord progressions, the back up vocals. Comparing these artist doesn't increase my listening enjoyment. Putting things into categories is lame.
like most people who watch and still listen to elliott, i think his tallent was so underappreciated and undervalued and a lot of other unders... sharkbate... my own albums....yes. i'd lisen to elliott 199 times for every 1 beatles song. but as far as history and influence and all of that... well...
It means that Elliott Smith far surpasses the Beatles. Look, I haven't jumped off any bridges lately, so the Beatles aren't half as good as Elliott Smith.
I think even Elliott would disagree with you on that. I love Elliott Smith and he's easily my favorite artist, but a comment like yours is pretty ridiculous.
No, it's not ridiculous. Just because Elliott would disagree with me on that doesn't mean I would conform to his standards. We are all free-thinkers. I am not bound to like the Beatles just because Elliott did.
@sbennett14 But you are certainly not bound to declare what is good and what is half as good in, in your words. You have declared what is good, not what your opinion was, the only right you have is to say what you prefer, not what's better...I'm willing to bet you're the guy who thinks his tastes are better than everyone else's
I'm willing to bet that you don't understand what the implications of somebody stating that something is "good" or "bad." Of course it's my opinion, otherwise you'd agree with me! I'm willing to bet that you're the kind of guy who enjoys picking apart comments on youtube to try and look smart to the internet community. Please make sure you do me a favor and enjoy the music you want to enjoy and let me enjoy the music I want to enjoy. Elliott would probably like that as well, don't you think?
@sbennett14 I totally agree with you, dude ... given a scenario where I would be given two piles of music, one with Beatles, and one with Elliott Smith, and being told I could keep one pile but only if I destroyed the other ...
... I'd stomp and break the Beatles tunes, and carry away the Elliott Smith music on a velvet pillow.
Could I love Elliott anymore than I already do? N'est pas possible! I didn't realize that he would have been 40. I suspect that had he made it over the rough spot after kicking his habit (the heartbreaking "If"), the music he made would have getting better and better.
And, he was definitely NOT the King of Pop. He was there just for us...
IMO, if Elliott had gotten over everything, he would have lost alot of his ability to write.
Not saying he would have gotten worse, but alot of his songs are about him battling his own personnel demons, If he was sober the entire time, we would have never had some of the amazing songs we have now.
Actually, when he started getting heavily into drugs, he could barely even play his songs anymore. He would play concerts where he'd start and have to stop playing. He would sometimes sit silently not able to play anything. He barely got any songs done until after his heavy drug phase.
@thx1138ccc I mean in terms of inspiration for songs and such, because it seems like every fucking musician has to do drugs in order to be a good musician, then if they stop they seem to suck.
The guitar effect on the solo is very George Harrison... Elliott was a big fan. It sounds like a Vox amp with compression and a steady analog Wah to me. Very similar tone to Hendrix's famous "backwards" solo from Are You Experienced?
40 years ago we were so lucky that a wonderful person came to being. even though we think of elliott on the day he passed, this is the day i choose to reflect and celebrate his life on because it was the beginning of someone and something great. as always we send all our love to everyone on this day and we are happy to know that elliott's memory will not only last longer than 34 years...40 years..but it will last forever. thank you all for remembering elliott especially on this special day.
haha for sure, I remember the first time I ever played this video for someone and they were like, "who are those guys in the back?" and I was like, "uhm... they're not actually part of the band" hahaha
