  • very cool

  • RIP What a great artist

  • One of my least favorite Elliott Smith songs.

and yet, I love it more then second favorite artist's best songs.

  • Best song about heroin abuse ever (apologies to Lou Reed).

  • Jarritos, for the maximum flavor.

  • If only I could let him know how what a difference he has made in my life. In my eyes, he is the greatest artist to ever live.

  • what album is this off of?

  • @F50Italia

    It's on his self-titled album.

  • R. William Murphy - music :)

  • i love elliott smith! this is my favorite song ever

  • Elliott Smith's music saved my life when i was feeling down, i just wish he could have saved his own....

  • jaja the others members of the band are so cool, but the best is the sound, i love the combination between acoustic guitar and a small drums set.

  • i heard an irish singer songwriter singing a song about cake.People like Eliots Smiths music is beacon of culture in the dark that is the world).

  • i still think this is the greatest fucking video on the internet.

  • THIS MUSIC WILL NEVER DIE! RIP Elliott

  • How old is this video

  • Just found out about him and just found out he's dead. Shame.

  • I never knew there was a video for an Elliott song this early... Damn I love it!

  • I love his thumb.

  • this is a really good song

  • awww, he got those kids juice..

  • This is now my new favorite song.

  • this is one of my favorite elliott smith songs. I wish he was still with us

  • this is such a great, spooky song and the arrangement is so perfect and spare- I much prefer smith's produced work jus because he is such a great arranger in addition to being a great songwriter, and then there's his voice which is so expressive. Each passing year makes his suicide all the more sad - it would be nice for him to be around, even if he got better and lost his mojo-

  • 1) biggie

    2) pac

    3) elliott smith

  • F...k. This is so good

  • i love my city!!!

  • I've listened to Elliott Smith more than any other musician.

    I can never get enough.

  • best video ever, R.I.P.

  • Elliott*

  • For those who have read the autumn de wilde book, theres an Elloitt Smith pratfall!

  • @esad182 That was no pratfall. Elliott ate sh#$ on that one.

  • Comment removed

  • @rossangeles what a happy accident

  • @rossangeles oh man, was he ok?

  • @esad182 He got up and said he was fine. He pretty much faceplanted, though.

  • not a note or a word more than needed, perfect.

  • Constant chord changes, lyrics that were painful but uplifting, and most of all, just his love for words, is what makes Smith sooooo awesome!! "Aint no comparison to Harrison", Elliott's one of a kind!

  • Elliott rules

  • best backup band ever

  • yep he lived for his music and he could reflect his beautiful soul in his music. RIP

  • what is the guy to the left of elliott playing? (the keys)

  • 1.elliot smith

    2.the beatles

    3.john lennon

    4. the shins

  • i am with you all the way up to the shins

  • why, the shins are good...i use to love the shins, but then i discovered elliott and now theres no time for anything else haha

  • comparing any of these fine artist is useless,

i like all four. but comparing one to the other doesn't increase or decrease my enjoyment of the music on an individual basis. Its not a competition. Elliot was influenced by the beatles and from the sounds of it so were are the shins. if you want to wax intellectual i would say that lennon is equally great at expressing emotions using music. Bob dylan was also a big influence on elliot.

  • No need for comparisons, Elliot was influenced by the Beatles. and if you know your music its evident. figure 8 is reminiscent of a lot of Beatles stuff. the chord progressions, the back up vocals. Comparing these artist doesn't increase my listening enjoyment. Putting things into categories is lame.

  • whos comparing?

  • like most people who watch and still listen to elliott, i think his tallent was so underappreciated and undervalued and a lot of other unders... sharkbate... my own albums....yes. i'd lisen to elliott 199 times for every 1 beatles song. but as far as history and influence and all of that... well...

  • He has got to be in my top 5 favs

  • Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 - October 21, 2003)

  • i love elliot, but the Beatles also wrote about expression especially John Lennon and George Harrison so i don't know what you're getting at

  • <3<3<3

  • This song gets better every time (impressive since it's so awesome to begin with)

  • I've noticed his videos gettin more views! a hell of a lot more views!

    Hell yea.

  • Every view is very well deserved, he deserves more though.

  • nice tune

  • Elliot Smith, Rest in Peace.

  • Amen.

  • @egkg75 i will fuckin slit your throat

  • Comment removed

  • no problem my fellow youtuber. I thank you for your well articulat- SHUT THE FUCK UP, I'LL FUCKING* SLIT YOUR THROAT!

  • LOL

  • A friend of mine showed me Elliott. I thought he was reakky wierd at first, but as I watch and listen more, I learn to love him. <3

  • that solo was rad

  • love that he sales his guitar to buy the kids soda.

  • I think we feel the influence of the Beatles in this video

  • If the Beatles were half this good, I'd jump off a bridge.

  • It means that Elliott Smith far surpasses the Beatles. Look, I haven't jumped off any bridges lately, so the Beatles aren't half as good as Elliott Smith.

  • I think even Elliott would disagree with you on that. I love Elliott Smith and he's easily my favorite artist, but a comment like yours is pretty ridiculous.

  • No, it's not ridiculous. Just because Elliott would disagree with me on that doesn't mean I would conform to his standards. We are all free-thinkers. I am not bound to like the Beatles just because Elliott did.

  • @sbennett14 But you are certainly not bound to declare what is good and what is half as good in, in your words. You have declared what is good, not what your opinion was, the only right you have is to say what you prefer, not what's better...I'm willing to bet you're the guy who thinks his tastes are better than everyone else's

  • I'm willing to bet that you don't understand what the implications of somebody stating that something is "good" or "bad." Of course it's my opinion, otherwise you'd agree with me! I'm willing to bet that you're the kind of guy who enjoys picking apart comments on youtube to try and look smart to the internet community. Please make sure you do me a favor and enjoy the music you want to enjoy and let me enjoy the music I want to enjoy. Elliott would probably like that as well, don't you think?

  • "We are all free-thinkers" yet you state you opinion as fact.

  • @sbennett14 I totally agree with you, dude ... given a scenario where I would be given two piles of music, one with Beatles, and one with Elliott Smith, and being told I could keep one pile but only if I destroyed the other ...

... I'd stomp and break the Beatles tunes, and carry away the Elliott Smith music on a velvet pillow.

    But that's just ME.

  • Right on man. Screw the pop. Screw the sellouts. Realize that music is about expression and you're set for life.

  • your gay

  • What do you mean ?

Just an influence, I don't compare them

  • I like his 'band'.

  • Screw the Figure 8 era lineup, this was his best. haha

  • gosh, im in love with elliott! Very cute video!

  • such a damn cute video!!

  • love it.

  • i love this video.

  • This made my day.

  • Could I love Elliott anymore than I already do? N'est pas possible! I didn't realize that he would have been 40. I suspect that had he made it over the rough spot after kicking his habit (the heartbreaking "If"), the music he made would have getting better and better.

And, he was definitely NOT the King of Pop. He was there just for us...

  • that last line really is the perfect way to describe him

  • @mdyewheal

IMO, if Elliott had gotten over everything, he would have lost alot of his ability to write.

Not saying he would have gotten worse, but alot of his songs are about him battling his own personnel demons, If he was sober the entire time, we would have never had some of the amazing songs we have now.

  • @mdyewheal Well, consider his drugs may have made him a better musician, I don't know though.

  • @VincentPrice111

Actually, when he started getting heavily into drugs, he could barely even play his songs anymore. He would play concerts where he'd start and have to stop playing. He would sometimes sit silently not able to play anything. He barely got any songs done until after his heavy drug phase.

  • @thx1138ccc I mean in terms of inspiration for songs and such, because it seems like every fucking musician has to do drugs in order to be a good musician, then if they stop they seem to suck.

  • Immortal

  • Time for a burritto @ 1:49, lol.

  • LMFAOLMFAO!

  • One of my all time favorite Elliott Smith songs.

  • The guitar effect on the solo is very George Harrison... Elliott was a big fan. It sounds like a Vox amp with compression and a steady analog Wah to me. Very similar tone to Hendrix's famous "backwards" solo from Are You Experienced?

  • thats what i use, with a boss wah wah

  • 40 years ago we were so lucky that a wonderful person came to being. even though we think of elliott on the day he passed, this is the day i choose to reflect and celebrate his life on because it was the beginning of someone and something great. as always we send all our love to everyone on this day and we are happy to know that elliott's memory will not only last longer than 34 years...40 years..but it will last forever. thank you all for remembering elliott especially on this special day.

  • happy 40th, Elliott. still miss you.

  • hi!!!!!!!!!1

  • As good as it gets folks.

  • The drummer is awesome

  • Great song of elliot one of the best for me

  • What kind of effect does elliott use on his guitar during the solo. It's very beatlesy and i would love to know what it is.

  • The guy with the mustache acting like he's singing back up cracks me up.

  • haha for sure, I remember the first time I ever played this video for someone and they were like, "who are those guys in the back?" and I was like, "uhm... they're not actually part of the band" hahaha

  • you're right

    it's elliott smith

  • Nice. =]

  • your not really smart

  • what kind of electric guitar does elliott use like during the solo?

  • A kind of gibson ES 335

  • the belt elliott smith was wearing

  • f u

  • verrrrrry mature

  • no more than yourself :D

  • I have a question, just out of curiousity, when where the last concerts elliott did?. The last one I could find was on Feb, 2003, thanks

  • Please never compare Elliott with Matt Costa. Matt Costa isn't as complex

  • man this video is amazing i love the ending, him eating a burrito and even when he falls its funny

oh and the mexican guy singing backup

    great song

  • Is he in oly?

I live here but I didn't recognize any of the spots..

  • I love the end of this clip where elliott gives those kids drinks, he looks really happy

  • Is he eating a burrito at 1:48? I've never met him before, but the only thing I've ever seen Elliott Smith eat is burritos (in pictures and here?)

  • i thinks hes eating a sandwich, and whats wrong with burritos?

  • Nothing, just an observation.

I thought it was kind of cute.

  • I think it looks like a sandwich too.

  • Does he really want us to believe that the Mexican dude is singing the harmonies?

  • I FUCKING LOVE this song!!!!!!!!!!

  • brilliant song!

    xo

  • Its more beatles-tastic. Very Harrison sounding lines.
