There is just so much wrong with this story anyway. The fact that kids have to go to segregated schools and be happy about it...the fact that it teaches them prejudice...the fact that it's OK to beat kids for being "bad"...I would hope we as a society have evolved beyond this at least, despite the amount of prejudice still remaining in the world.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that Naomi seems to be the only good actor here. The part where the mother is expressing how she's worried something happened to her missing child sounds like Mom is reading it off a cue card. I haven't acted in anything past high school, and I could deliver the lines better than that!
@squeapler The mother's acting actually got better in the movie starting with this part. There were some parts in the last video that were okay, but not entirely. But remember this was a low-budget film by a black filmmaker so there was little rehearing and retakes done.
That black boy deserves a medal for his contribuation to society: making sure the naughty, conniving, little wench gets her butt redder than a Japanese Tomato!

The acting is poor to the max. But these are powerful scenes! Naomi's behavoir CLEARLY warrants chastisement.,,,back then a good spanking or paddling and today probably detention or expulsion from school. Many thanks for posting this rare footage! The poor girl gets whipped TWICE in the movie, the second one must have been QUITE severe...but normal in many homes back then!
That's what I thought, harriettewinslo... Black movies had good dialogue and storylines in the 1930s, thanks to original, commited writers. Unfortunatly the producers lacked money for top production values, hence the bad lighting, the most obvious shortcomming in this movie. More rehersal time would have been good too. As I say, some modern black producer should redo it, with all the none PC stuff included. Not a modern PC clean up of black American history.

I was brought up in the 50s and 60s. Spanking in the home and at school was common place. Corporal punishment was abused by a small number of parents and teachers over the decades, legislators had these people in mind when they banned it. This movie could be made again with the same 1930s attitudes to naughty children. I saw the 1980s movie, 'Annie' last night and was amused by the politically correct 'Miss Hanigan.' The dreaded paddle was not used on Annie's bottom once.

It's good to get intelligent comments, so much of the web is abuse and counter abuse and you begin to wonder if these rude people were ever put over a desk like, Naomi for a good hard spanking. Rudeness was never tolerated in my childhood or teen years, but now it's common place. The worst thing a rude child can expect is to be grounded today. I'm sure it has little or no effect on their bad behavior and their rudeness continues into adulthood.
