I was just telling my boys about seeing U2 at Toronto's Massey Hall when I was in Highschool(in the 80's) and how these guys opened for them. I saw U2 again in 2009 and they still rock. They are amazing! Like the Waterboys too. I didn't appreciate them at the time. I was too gaga for U2 LOL
Ok...this was 1985 meaning it was probably out on a cassette tape or lower grade of audio...that being said I would normally be appalled by 240p but I think it might most closely represent that era of audio recording. Sorry, I'm done being ironic. P.S. this song is an absolute masterpiece!
@64034J - Let me see, I don't do video games, much tv, alcohol, not take drugs/gossip. Not that I am a puritan, and not that I live in scholarly & literary seclusion, but I was raised in a slum, fought against crime, protected the prime minister of my country, wrote award winning rap song, play didgeridoo, am undefeated champion in a particular sport, raising 4 children, never picked a fight or an argument. Now I agree, I need to get out more often, but please don't knock what you cannot see.
one of the most gifted songs in the last 30 years. a testament to great song writing and well crafted producing . the passion and intensity is unmatched.
timeless and gets better with age. the mighty 80's has no rivalry!!
Not sure what this song is about, the effect it has for me is that it starts in the mind of a young child and expands into the life of an adult heart whereupon dreams are lost and tragedies abound, but the one who apprehends their dreams are like dew on the grass in the morning sun - here one moment, gone the next. If music reflects how great the human race is, then it also betrays how far we have fallen - surely, the excellence of this song tells us there is one greater, whose image we bear.
I cannot believe that I have never hears this song until today (August 2011). This song is absolutely terrific. The lyrics are moving, the musicianship terrific, the melody memorable, and the orchestration (trumpet and sax) a perfect touch. Thanks for sharing this!!!!
Used to hear this on 91X in San Diego but I forgot the name of the song and the band. Just now heard it on Firstwave/Serius satellite. Finally remember the band and what an absolute classic this song is.
I am not a religious person, as far as I don't belong to any creed and I don't have a clear concept of what God might be. But I feel the presence of the human soul in music, and specially in this magnificent song....amazing, thank you for the upload!
@smck001 i had no friggin idea mate to be honest....i grew up listening to them in irish pubs and clubs around here in manchester..and just presumed ...
makes no difference to me though..still a great band when your ratted on a few beers to sing along too...
Good lyrics + Good Melody = Great Song! too bad you can only get these kind of songs 20+ years ago! still thanks to Youtube for making this possible to reminisce great New Wave music! Long Live New Wave!!!
I saw them open for U2 in Dec. '84 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washinton,DC a venue which seats roughly 3000. This was a mini-tour U2 did to promote the release of the Unforgettable Fire, when they came back in the spring of '85 it was off to the bigger arenas and they're shows were never the same IMO.
As for that night the "Boys damn near blew U2 off the stage(and it was the best U2 performance I ever saw). One of my top 5 all-time concerts.
i think i was 11 years old when thhis song came out. we lived in the country, rural Oklahoma. i first saw this video on "Firday Night Videos" - when channel 9 used to broadcast ....
