I am going back to HK for vacation. I will go to Chak Chu ( Stanley) to see this building. It is good to visit historical properties (even though it was moved to a new location).
Thank you for posting. I am definitely touched. Even though preserving old achitectures seems almost hopeless in HK (one would think there'll be plenty of financial resources if the government has any vision), it's wonderful to see the little bit that's done. What kind of a world class city it is if there isn't any respect to history?!
Murray Building has been known to be VERY haunted when it was situated in its original location. During the Japanese invasion of HK, a lot of people was killed outside the building. Since it was moved to Stanley, there has not been any more haunting stories. A lot of restaurants are in there now, the one I liked was Chilli and Spice.
It's a bit late and totally the wrong thing to do - sadly on the mainland they are not heeding what happened in HK and are now knocking their history down. What happened in HK was that as control was placed in the hands of the Chinese from the British who had effectively occupied the territory, all the architecturally impotant buildings were knocked down in the rush to modernise.
This building was in the old Victoria Barracks, I remember the day it was taken down. Each brick was numbered so it could be reassembled later. That day never came when I was there, 1964-1995. There was never a free site, and the government couldnt find one suitable. If it has been re-erected then good. The government demolished hundreds of old buildings and used the spoil as land fill, typical of them at the time.
I went back to HK in 2007 at Christmas. I found that Murray building, and its ghosts, had been re-erected in Stanley. Land has been reclaimed near the Smugglers Inn Pub and there is was. It is now a restaurant and bar with shopping facilities, quite expensive too.
This is the site of the infamous Opium War: gun-boat diplomacy, war, & unequal treaties to ensure the British imperialist could continue forced-sales of British/Indian opium into China & thereby ensure silver wealth for its Crown.
I want to go to Hong kong so badly! But how is it in Hong Kong anyway? is there a lot of fun and beautiful? Is there big, warm? I want to know everything :D The reason i want to go there is because i love HK music and Hk singers and all the tvb series
Well done Hong Kong! How I wish the Singapore government could have done the same earlier for many of our already demolished heritage and historic buildings.
The narration kinda puts me off. It's a bit cringing. It's amazing that they actually rebuilt the whole mansion using every single brick they saved when they knocked it down. I've never heard of this place before but I'll have to check it out when I'm next in HK.
There's an early 20th century Chinese house that's just been restored near Sham Shui Po, in Kowloon, HK. It looked amazing. Apparently, it's gonna be open to the public to visit.
hi ronin35, it is a very exceptional case. the fact is that demolishing the only policy for hk government to carry out.. i can't name it all.. i feel shamed being a hong kong people...

It's a shame and downright tragedy that HK government would not preserve STAR ferry as a historic relic like they did for this building.

Nice clip. Nice to see it's being rebuilt. Don't know if there's still ghost stories now.

I've visited this Building. Its a real tourist attraction. The building was rebuilded and moved so it does not look too old.
