all cause they wanted to get low enough for a look at the islands, its a high altitude plane ride not a sight seeing ride threw the country. Damn straight it was pilot error and they all payed the price for it !!
@MoFoFoRillDo You better do your homework before you start criticizing dead pilots. Just so you know, a Royal Commission of Enquiry cleared the pilots of any fault. Unbeknownst to them someone changed their way point.
not a simulation at all - at the time of impact they were below cloud base, less than 2000 ft above mean sea level, and in sector whiteout conditions, so they didn't see any horizon and proceeded straight to the white rising terrain of Erebus
Correct me if i'm wrong but didnt some dick at Air NZ change the flight path at the last minute that put the plane on a direct heading and level straight into the mountain?
"..didnt some dick change the flight path & stick the aeroplane straight into the mountain?
Yes some dick, did.
The pilot in command who, with effectively zero Off-Airways experience, over a thousand nautical from his last known position & only a little more than twenty miles from his next available suitable navigation aid, arrogantly elected to descend a perfectly serviceable aeroplane from the Minimum Enroute Altitude & to do just that! Cannot evade those simple facts!
@brianrallen The end waypoint NDB location was changed . An error was made logging its new position. The check made to catch this error did not catch this error ( amounting to over 20 NM ) . This error was made by NAV section ANZ. The briefing given by ANZ was faulty ( according to US Navy pilots ) . Collings himself broke no rules at all. ( his descent was cleared by McMurdo ) Cannot evade THESE simple facts .....and I knew Collings, he was a damn fine pilot.
@brianrallen Arrogant? Wow. Big call. His job was to fly a plane full of people down to see Antarctica. They had to fly that low to see anything and were given permission to do so. He was under control of McMurdo Base air traffic control in McMurdo airspace. Do some research.
In an aviation career thus far spanning around a half century and more than 30.000 hours I've yet to witness a more bloody ridiculous - pathetic, even -- and pointless -- destruction of a perfectly good aeroplane -- and 253 innocent men and wonen and children.
Anybody can fly a helicopter at a mountain and say sector whiteout. I can do it at the southern alps in a small aircraft and say the same. NAC regulations do not permit going below 16000 ft. The previous flights ignored this and zipped down McMurdo sound to give passengers an excellent view. Sift through the opinions and quotes from books and you can only draw conclusions from fact. My last comments on this tragedy is seeing it on TV at the time made me numb as it was for most of NZ.
@coffeecation NAC regulations only applied to IFR flight - this flight was in VFR conditions and thus no regulation, law or SOP was broken. The reason the other INS-navigated flights went down McMurdo Sound is because ANZ's nav section made a mistake and left that mistake in the computer for over a year. The crew was briefed to go down McMurdo Sound, and that is where they (and Peter Mulgrew) believed they were. See the "Washington Transcript" of the CVR if you don't believe me.
@turricaned Please let me know what institution you are a student of at as I can only find them overseas. I am completing degree in aviation operations, but investigation? Some of you information is incorrect and basic understanding of avaition rules and regulations for an investigative student are very questionable. Getting into aviation investigation in NZ needs at least a degree in engineering or a similar practice. We will never agree on this so best of luck in your endeavors.
@coffeecation The only institution is the University Of Life, but I'm a B.Eng Software Engineer if that helps any. I'd be interested to know what information you think is "wrong". SOPs for Antarctic operations stated that on invitation and under radar control, an altitude of 500ft could be permitted. The overcast became clear at 2,500ft as stated by Mac Weather Centre - i.e. they were not in cloud, and it is a matter of record that the CVR was altered by Chippindale and Gemmell.
@turricaned Thus Chippindale and Gemmell's "Bit thick here, eh Bert" was considered unintelligible by the NTSB, but sounds more like "This is Cape Bird", "The Taylor or Wright now ey?" becomes "Taylor on the right now" (indicating that Mulgrew believed they were over McMurdo Sound), and the "Where are we?" (in which the question mark was added) becomes "where are we... about up to here now." indicating that they were following the path on the map and thought they knew where they were.
Just to make it clear - this simulation is not accurate, and I don't think any version of FS without specialist weather software would be able to make it accurate - they were not in cloud and there was no cloud below them - they were in *sector whiteout*. There was an overcast between 2,500ft and 10,000ft which obscured the top of Erebus from their flight level, but it was a fog bank at the base of the mountain and reflected sunlight that obscured Erebus from the flight deck.
During the summer months, the ice melts back enough that remains of Flight 901 become clearly visible, pieces of the hull, etc. It was indeed a sad day. =-(
...in the path of Mt Erebus? I didn't realise the mountain was on the move that day? An over simplified view of what happened and missing some very key aspects.
The pilot and crew made including but not exclusive many errors -such as decent into unknown VMC conditions (Cessna pilot knows this) losss of radio contact (Line of sight something in the way) and the DC10 had three switches on the overhead panel - they were gyroscopic navigation aids that gave lattitude and longitude. The pilot used an atlas instead of proper aviation/area maps so even if he knew how to utilise this he would still have not known where he was any way.
@coffeecation Wrong. The VMC conditions were clear - 40 miles visibility (effectively unlimited) below 2,500 ft. This simulation is inaccurate - they were not in cloud at the time of the crash, and the film developed from the passenger's cameras proves that. What they encountered was a form of whiteout - "sector whiteout" that was little-known at the time.
@turricaned The air they were in was clear all the way down to the ground, but a fog bank had moved up to obscure the end of Lewis Bay, and the base of the mountain. This phenomenon was filmed by the recovery crews in the weeks after the accident. Because of the fog bank and the distance and angle, Lewis Bay was easy to mistake for McMurdo Sound (where the pilots thought they were, as the INS coordinates were changed without their knowledge).
@turricaned The chief investigator altered the CVR (voice "black box") transcript - signed off by the NTSB - with the assistance of ANZ's chief pilot to reinforce the false impression that they were in cloud and lost. The Captain's records found on the mountain were destroyed by ANZ management, and both the Captain and First Officer's homes were entered without permission and records removed and destroyed - to cover up the fact that the pilots thought they were going down McMurdo Sound.
@turricanedI am a pilot and amateur aircraft investigator. They were never in VMC conditions and if you study the CVR transcripts they were all unsure of where they were. The limited view photos show cloud. The last photo was the spilt second of impact from oil of the disintegrating engine splattering the window. Apart from deviating from the NAC regulations they also broke aviation law. My father in law was an aircraft engineer, knew the crew and it hurt him to to his death to knowing the truth
@coffeecation I'm a long-term aviation enthusiast and student of accident investigation. There were clouds south of them, but the aircraft was underneath them. What was seen to the east and west is immaterial. McMurdo Station cleared them down to 1,500ft with 40 miles vis. and the transponder was coding, indicating they had them on radar, satisfying the VFR regulations as far as the crew were concerned. The CVR was altered with ANZ connivance - they were sure they were over McMurdo Sound.
Listen....The name "Erebus" means 'place of darkness between earth and hell, through which the dead must pass on their way down'....The flight path coordinates were suddenly changed without notice or explanation in the plane's navigational computer the night before, resulting in the crash....In some cultures, volcanoes are considered gateways to hell....If you are asking me, those people were literally sacrificed by devil-worshippers...in other words, sent straight to hell.
Well, the Mahon report would have us believe the computer sent these people to their deaths. But that report gets it all wrong: when you are in visual you have no busuness relying on an onboard computer. I can't believe in all those hours before the judge no one explained this most basic tenet of fail safe flying to him.
@mydogblood . You asked so here it s - Erebus nothing. The signal to the brain is (Was) slower then the vertical impact on the body hence it was the only good thing (In context to the worst thing to happen to such a small population aside from natural events) to come out of the tragedy.
@PanzerBlitz43 .......you idiot. The crash occured in 'white out' conditions.................ie zero visibility and a false horizon. The radar only gave them a few seconds warning before impact. They were off course due to programming error in thier INS...inertial navigation system. Grow up and learn aliitle about the case before slagging people off. They did not see the mountain before they flew into it...........unlike this cartoon.....do you understand IDIOT!
@Aussiephil99 so that excuses it eh? When you're a pilot there's no excuses. Nothing is "equipment error" when the lives everybody aboard is in your hands that's why they have training for everything and anything which can ever go wrong in the equipment or otherwise. You fail miserably, you must be a flunked pilot.
@PanzerBlitz43 ....thanks for the lecture........you clearly know nothing about aviation I have a commercial pilots licence and instructor rating....do you......No all you have is some stains on your computer screen. Oh quick get off the computer your mums home.

Don't give a shit about spelling, would you go watch a video where your relative was involved in the dead and you comment "bad spelling", that means you give a shit about spelling more than your own family member!
My thoughts and sympathy goes out to all the familIes, friends and also Air New Zealand staffs, that lost 237 Passengers and 20 Crews members that were on board the Air New Zealand DC-10-30, Flight 901, Rego: ZK-NZP,and perished at the Mt Erebus site over 30 years ago. Rest In Peace.
@Soldierboy641 its not mount everest its mount erebus the one in antarctica with a lava lake im reasearching it for my project there a also many other volcanoes in antarctica
@Master4902 I was born in 1968 - we got a lot about this on the news here in Australia in 1979 as you can imagine. I thought they were saying Airbus for a while my parent explained Erebus -which sounds a little similar - was the name of the mountain.
my god..what beaulifl channel...full pictures of "manga" and littlegirls...It's so gay for a nick "waroftheknights" of course you are an expert aviation..of course (piece of shit)
You could have put a lot more cloud in. The pilots had no idea there was a mountain ahead, and due to seperate layers of cloud they probably thought they could see the horizon - this is known as sector whiteout. Even once the GPWS went off they only bought the nose up 15 degrees. They probably never realised the white mass in front of them was a mountain.
The wrong coordinates were programmed into the system at Auckland before the aircraft departed. The aircraft flew the course it was programmed to, which set them on direct collision with Erebus. It was doomed for disaster before it even took off. Hope that answers your question nascarguy2488.
yes and the frame rate of the flight 901 was very bad thats why maybe he crashed....so sadic making a pice of s***** that was a real acident...let professional do it man....first the "hard landing" with the kc-10 and now this!!!!man looks like you sofer a lot and fsx is to give us pleasure.happy one cheers
Well put together but your date is wrong - it was November 28 1979, not September. I distinctly remember this as I was sitting School Certificate exams at the time and had walked home from finishing. At that time Air New Zealand flights were known as TE. The flight in question was TE901. As I understand, TE stood for Trans Empire.
well I suppose on this youtube you can put anything on it, but yes it was a awful disaster that our Nation faced in 1979 and you probably weren't even born then right? but I hope you get to read some of these still available books and you can still buy them or go to most large libaries on flight TE 901 and really try and understand what everyone went through in this Disaster, but I will say good luck to you mate if you do become a Pilot and fufil your dreams o.k.

Even once the GPWS went off they only bought the nose up 15 degrees. They probably never realised the white mass in front of them was a mountain.

The flight didn't EXACTLY go off course.
The wrong coordinates were programmed into the system at Auckland before the aircraft departed. The aircraft flew the course it was programmed to, which set them on direct collision with Erebus. It was doomed for disaster before it even took off. Hope that answers your question nascarguy2488.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
its airbus not erebus

Mt Erebus is the mountain which the airplane crashed into.

Well put together but your date is wrong - it was November 28 1979, not September. I distinctly remember this as I was sitting School Certificate exams at the time and had walked home from finishing. At that time Air New Zealand flights were known as TE. The flight in question was TE901. As I understand, TE stood for Trans Empire.
hawaiianflight 3 years ago
TE was from Air New Zealand's former name "Tasman Empire Airways Linmited"

well I suppose on this youtube you can put anything on it, but yes it was a awful disaster that our Nation faced in 1979 and you probably weren't even born then right? but I hope you get to read some of these still available books and you can still buy them or go to most large libaries on flight TE 901 and really try and understand what everyone went through in this Disaster, but I will say good luck to you mate if you do become a Pilot and fufil your dreams o.k.
