Religion exploits a feature of human development that gives parents a transcendent credibility with young kids to imprint a belief that are intellectually unable to rationally analyze. But that is not necessarily true. Ultimately all a democracy means is that each citizen has an equal voice and that the government serves at the pleasure of it's people. How voices are collected to choose leadership and policy can vary wildly. There is nothing to stop an Islamic nation from having a constitution that established some principles of the religion as inviolate and allowed a democratic government to create laws within that framework. Giving people ownership is a good idea I think.

I am from Sri Lanka, and living in a 3rd world democracy I know its pitfalls.
Politicians holding office do everything possible to make sure they get elected next time. For that they borrow from IMF etc., and give free to the voters. Would you believe Sri Lankan education from KG upto PhD is free. Health is completely free. They distroy valuable lands plot them and give free to the voters And resutl, despite having one of the most fertile lands in the world, and ample rain we are poor.

I think the days of rotten institutions are coming to an end. The internet is knitting us together into a single global mind and it won't be that long before we are all on the same team. The religions and governments that feed off their ability to make us see differences between us and hate each other for those differences are losing that ability. The net spreads us across time and space, but there is one dimension left that the internet has not addressed yet but will very soon: concept space.

Suppose each time you articulated a concept the word processor converted it into a link that let you choose which of several closely related ideas you meant. It would then be much harder to misinterpret what someone else said. It would also affect what you ended up writing, because you would most likely find better reasoning already linked to the concept you started to discuss. It might even change your mind completely without having the discussion. You don't lose face, but grow privately.

Religion exploits a feature of human development that gives parents a transcendent credibility with young kids to imprint a belief that are intellectually unable to rationally analyze. I realize the only reason they do this is because they themselves are victims of the same sort of exploitation. We have a term for something that can be provoked to react uncontrollably when given certain input--we call such a thing "voice activated machinery." If an idea can turn a normal human being into a voice activated weapon, then I think we should study this idea carefully, and consider anyone who endorses it a potential enemy of humanity and decency.
