Happy belated. I've found the best trick to quickly break in a pipe is not to bother. It's not that they don't work because I think they do. I used to use the honey method all the time. Some people even pulvarize tobacco in a food processor and apply it to the bowl. But I've found that just smoking them as I would naturally is all part of getting to know the pipe, and that's ultimately more important. At the risk of sounding maudlin, it'll be a lifelong relationship; no need to rush it.
