  • Aqua Man! And his mom, Aquaneta!

  • sonar, not radar.

  • That is f---ing amazing!!! It's a shame that he's no longer with us anymore, showing us his talent. RIP Ben.

  • @crusnbleu

that's a sick joke, not respectful at all

  • RIP BEN

  • He died. The cancer came back and took his life at age 17. Life doesn't seem fair sometimes..

  • @ae86miami I bet he didn't see that one coming

  • @crusnbleu too far man.

  • @crusnbleu Wow, that was an incredibly mean thing to say....

  • He has died ??? More info please

  • RIP Ben

  • RADAR = radio detection and ranging. This is not radar, he is not using any radio.

  • It was amazing to watch this video and see this kind of thing. It was devastating to see right after this, a news report on this same kid dieing from cancer. It's terrible.

  • I typically would troll and make racist jokes. But, this is really interesting. It's good to see that he found a way that he can get past being blind and function nearly as good as before.

  • I can't understand how he can play videogames with "hearing" where the tv is.

  • @summonzer

I think he hears the moves and stuff.

  • @PlagueOfTheSociety How can he hear the moves? Unless it is a hardcore fighting game. Think about him playng something like Gtand Theft Auto.

  • @summonzer

Yeah, well.. I dunno about games like GTA, but in this video he was playing Dragon Ball Z which is similar to Tekken.

  • cracked has taught me this before!!!

    he isn't the only one!!!

  • @jimenalawls Seems more like you smoked crack and THINK you learned this.

  • RIP he was one of a kind.

  • This kid rocks

  • DRAGON BALL Z!!

  • very amazing.

  • 4 people are neo-nazi's

  • its a shame he died not long after the documentary was made

  • @macca1139 howww?? man that sucks

  • I can believe most of these, but playing video games will NOT work!!! The pictures on the screen are NOT textual!!! He's just mashing buttons!

  • @MichaelChin1994 He says he listens. Nothing about "seeing". He listens to the abilities and their "different voices". Try listening yourself.

  • @MichaelChin1994

I bet I can whoooooop your ass in budokai tenkaichi 3 w/o looking at the screen shooot ive done it before ^-^

  • @MichaelChin1994 Please be careful when stating opinions as fact. Until you are / were in this boys shoes, you really can't say what 'works' or not for this amazing young man. On top of that, this young man has died. I'd like to ask that you please show some respect. His mom or other family members could be reading your 'derogatory' posts. :-(

  • @DeafTuber IDK WTF is wrong with me. I was being a dick >_>

  • Wow. What an awesomely talented young man. Who knows what he could've been had he been able to grow up. R.I.P Ben.

  • Fuck off you money grabbing whores, dumb ass news cast.. This is fake as fuck.. Stupid cunts.

  • lol, that sounds like fap fap fap fap fap fap xD

  • why is this is refereed to as radar? I dont see a radio transmitter coming out his head. Its sonar folks lol

  • Thumps up if you are watching this in 2011 :)

  • The clicking thing is great and it actually would work.......apart from the video game part. Since it's based on when the sound comes back from the click, the video game would be based purely on a completely unmoving screen. Has to base it purely on the audio but that wouldn't work without memorising the sounds beforehand with sight. I think the news team staged the game part to make it more impressive. Still a good talent though.

  • Well, he was winning in a fighting game, which I can do by literally hitting random buttons, so let's not get too carried away.

Foosball was pretty cool, though, to a degree you can spin random poles, as I have also done.

Also can someone explain to me why people without some kind of horrible deformity that can do something cool never get human interest stories?

  • This is said because he died two years laterat the age of 16....R.I.P BEN

  • How do you lose in fooseball to a blind boy?

  • Rest in peace Ben. You were an amazing person :(

  • I'm never playing this guy at Call of Duty I'll get my ass kicked.

His senses > Surround Sound Headset

  • Wow, You are half dophin and half Boy, What about he can't see blackboard at school ? Or You can't write it. Huh?

  • Proven fake.

  • @gordonchrist how

  • They didn't really tell anything about the rader?

  • aaron mccollum ftw!

  • That is truley amazing, even though he is blind, he can still do anything we can.. God blessed him with something very special.

  • hahah hes playing DBZ ahhah

  • Magnificent. The boy is Extraordinary. Wow.

God Blessed him whith something very very special.

  • that is amazing

  • This guy was truly amazing, and had a message that we all should learn from. R.I.P Ben Underwood, you truly will be missed.

  • lol, we already see using radar. perhaps it'd be better to say he uses echolocation?

  • its not radar it's ecolocation

  • amazing! I mean, I could understand how he can tell the distance of an object, but to state explicitly what the object is? Amazing...

  • he lived in the area so i suppose hes used to it, sending multiple chirps at it could allow him to build an image, but its truly amazing he could do that in the first place

  • R.I.P. I saw this a long time ago, sad that he passed on..

  • he died?

  • Watch the movie called: The cove!!! Help the dolphins!!!!!!!!

  • comments posted out of order but point stands. and if its real then my hats off to him but this seems completely implausible and impossible

  • Impossible is always redefined :)

  • i guess he could react to his opponent hitting him through the sounds made when he is hit or when the controller vibrates and work it out systematically but thats nothing amazing.

  • can you play video games with your eyes closed?

  • this sounds and looks like bull shit. i dont think humans can echo locate. we dont have the organs from what i under stand. and a video game cant express spacial dimension or awareness. its a VIDEO game. the the table soccer game can cause the ball rolls and creates sound but the video game. he must play like i play super smash bros... by mindlessly pressing buttons.

  • @jeffmorison

It doesn't matter what you "think", echolocation is a known ability that some very few people can master.

It's real but it's not something the ordinary blind person can learn, it takes an extreme amount of dedication or born talent to learn it since it's not something you teach yourself to do but rather your mind. You have to transform your inept way of perceiving things to do it.

  • R.I.P. Ben

  • my teatcher thought i was rong when i said that a boy could see when he was blind. but i was right! hahahah<3

  • how is that possible!!!! are we adapting??

  • Agree with Felphero

  • how does he do the clicking sound

  • "Gods walkin roun n dont evn no it..."

  • real life daredevil

  • amazing:)

  • This should be impossible.

  • man what a kid a true inspiration, this proofs human beings are much more capable than we think

  • i would love to be able to do that.

  • Does it matter if he is?

  • WoW are you realy that fucking stupid to ask that question..so what if hes black?

    Racist bitch!

  • @SashaCullenOfficial He's a nigger.

  • @johnnylightning258 you'r e an ignorant f*ck

  • @linpama1000 wow you couldnt just spell fuck?

  • @johnnylightning258 So what, you are racist. He might be a negro but not a nigger.

  • @johnnylightning258 and you are probably white ... useless ... and really to stupid to deserve to live... lay down and die boy ... your stupidity may kill you in away that will be both painfull and humiliateing some day ... so just die now !

  • HE IS?!?!?!?

  • he see's with sonar, not radar

  • fucking cancer that kills people !! this guy was amazing ! RIP daredevil.

  • this is so kool I saw a vid on him he is so awesome

  • Any way we can replicate this for some sort of sound based night vision for soldiers?

Would be swank if we could

  • Ben died on January 19, 2009 at the age of 16. He died from the same cancer that took his sight.

    Sad.

  • I thought it wasn't true, until I googled his name.

He was such a fearless guy.

I really would like to think of him everyday, and his fearlessness.

People with sight should have no excuse.

    May God bless him.

  • Source Wikipedia

    R.I.P

  • Bet he didn't see that coming

  • Bet he heard it.

  • can we develop that abilty?

  • ....I can hardly believe it...how can this be true...?....but....it is...Amazing!

  • the guy talkingis so funny

  • DONT EAT YOUR PENIS:)

  • LOL...too late....hahaha just kidding, good one man, epic win!!!

  • WTF?

  • wow he is amazing!!

  • holy shit

  • Wow... amazing how the human body can compensate and adapt.

  • wow, that's great, the boy is briliiant, personally as a half-deaf man i could never imagine echolocating myself.

  • What did I tell you Murtha, Harris? I was right about this.

  • Wow this young male is extra ordinary, awesome and great. He has the best set of ears and a great attitude. And his parent raised him excellently. God bless you both always.

  • Amazing.

  • It's amazing what that young man is able to do.

And it's amazing that his mother was named after

    a brand of hair spray.

  • I saw his whole show. I think its the most amazing thing i've ever seen in my life!!! Hes the most expiriensed in the world!! AMAZING!!!

  • thats amazing

  • it's not radar. radar transmits radio wave and the waves that bounce back are picked up by a receiver.

sonar you use sound and you listen for the sound reflecting back.

  • lolmoment. It's called the Subconscious mind.

  • This mother deserves to be mother of the year over and over. We have a blind 6 year old grand-daughter and it is inspiring to us to see this wonderful boy. No cane or sound aids. He is WONDERFUL!

  • SWEEEEEETTT!!!!

  • i must find a way to unlock this radar power from my brain...

  • cool kid

  • amazing!

  • aye fantastic init

  • i can do that clicking exactly how he does it.

but i cant use it to see, coz i'm not blind.

i do it all the time, its a bad habit i guess

  • If we want to be pedantic, it's sonar; SOund Navigation And Ranging, or "sonic radar".

If blindness had to happen to a guy, 3 was the perfect age for it to happen; you're old enough to figure out how to do something like this, but too young to know that it's "impossible".

  • I know it's not radar but it is pretty much biological radar, radar is a way to describe the way dolphins get around, which is the same way he get's around.

  • @FeArAiR ...sonar

  • too bad that's not radar...but nice try

radar = radio detection and ranging.

  • Not sure what you are on about. Radar uses a sound bouncing off an object and that is what this fantastic boy does.

  • radar does not use sound. sonar uses sound

  • OK fair enough but I am more interested in the amazing achievements of a boy who has lost both his eyes than the "politically correct" wording of how it is done. My Grand-daughter is blind and we don't care what things are called as long as she achieves a fuitful life (and she is so far). Life is too short to be too pedantic, just be inspired to great things by seeing the great things some people achieve.

  • That's so hard to believe... a human exhibiting bat-like hearing? Amazing.

  • truly amazing!!!

  • I love this story!!! He makes the sound himself!

  • Pretty increadible.

Anyone know what the clicking is?

Does he have a clicker, or make sounds himself?

  • I believe it is his fingers. He snaps them to get echo. Our Grand-daughter sometimes does it with her tongue if she is in unfamiliar territory.

  • he actually uses his tongue too.

  • Thought he might click his tongue as well. It is amazing what blind children and adults can due with appropriate encouragement. As a mother and grand-mother you want to protect your children so sometimes it is hard to let them try things, even when they don't have what we believe to be a disability. Thanks for your reply to me.

  • no prob!

  • Wow! That's really amazing!

  • That is unbelievably awesome...

  • ka. wow.

    **disbelief**

    ka-cha WOW

  • Amazing
