  • cottonmouths dont pursue people or canoes. sometimes they happen to be swimming in the same direction. its a myth that they are that aggressive.

  • @ReformedPastorJude This is incorrect sir, can be very aggressive during their mating season. just sayin... They're not the most aggressive, but can be at certain times of the year. I grew up with them in Louisiana.

  • The Buffalo is crawling with cotton mouths. They usually don't mess with people but some are aggressive & will chase a canoe & even try to get in, & they can & do climb into low branches hanging over the water.

  • i had a near miss with a rattle headed copper moccasin---

  • Yes i have i know what a cotton mouth looks like and have been bitten by one

  • Who ever said a water moccasin wont bite the water is full of shit i've had them bite me in the water damn near lost my foot from it so they DO attack but only if you piss one off.

  • no you havent. you may have had water snakes bite you. but cottonmouths? doubt it. but yes your right, cotton mouths can be very aggressive.

  • Wow - I used to live in Marshall when I was a kid. We used to canoe on the Buffalo all the time and I remember seeing moccasins grouped together on the banks. I remember once swimming and one came after our friend Paula. We got out in time but it was totally creepy.

  • Well, niemeyr84 is wrong, and so is olzawski. Cottonmouths are very aggresive when it is warm and sunny, and they can and will climb on rocks and cypress branches. You can tell the difference in Water snakes, and moccasins by the triangular shape of a moccasins head. All I have to say is that I hope Ann and Steve don't tump.

  • so what state is this in?

  • Been on that canoe trip and I've seen them too!

  • My guess is that it was a banded watersnake. They are very common on the Buffalo and they do hang in trees. I took pictures of a friend holding a banded watersnake that fell into his canoe.

  • WTF?????

  • To clarify, this spot is where a water moccasin swam up to our other friends Anne and Steve's canoe, attempting to get into it. They whacked at it with their paddles and it swam away. Brian and Teresa then tell us a story about a nest of snakes -- unspeciified type -- thats were hanging from trees.

  • hope all is well, tell bubba i said hello

  • Water Moccasin's dont climb. Water snakes (non-venemous)are climbers and are famous for dropping in on passers-by.

  • Cottonmouths (water moccasins) do not "nest" or attack. This is bullshit.
