It really is, but I think he used 1 second clips (Which is really hard to find like you said xD) and kinda cut the song here and there (The song is really easy to cut and paste things here and there)

Yes, it would take forever, plus they also had to cut and piece together the music they way they wanted because that was not exactly how the song goes. but good commercial

Syncing the clips is actually pretty easy, so is editing the song down to a minute. (Not that my Video Response above is anywhere near as slick and cool as the Discovery promo, but I shot, spliced, and synced the video and sound in about a day.)

The part that takes the longest is FINDING the right clips within all those hours of source footage.
