Led by Judah Maccabee, the Maccabean revolt reestablished the right of the Jewish people to worship their god - not the Greek gods. They finally were able to throw the Greek Army out of Jerusalem and clean and rededicate the temple. Thus, the hgoliday of Hanukah (many spellings in English) to commemorate the event.
