Ever since I discovered Arrested Development, it's completely beyond me why anyone would ever make a comedy with a laugh track anymore. I can't even watch sitcoms that have them nowadays, it makes me cringe.
@leebeer The show was not cancelled immediately. In fact, Showtime actually tried to pick up the series, but the creator did not wish to continue it. It just one of those TV shows that isnt meant for the big networks. But we can appretiate how great those 3 seasons were, and according to its creator, thats why he did not wish to continue; to preserve how great those three seasons were.
@Littlemisshavoc Occasionally, when I find myself saying one thing but then doing another, I hear a Howard-esque narrator outlining my inevitable failure.
@TankMacnamara81 The office came first, but the office is a moccumentary with interviews with the characters etc, which was not an original idea at the time. Arrested Development was shot in the style of a doccumentary but it was sitcom, so the characters aren't aware of the cameras. They are 2 different styles but AD was more original.
The shows was ahead of it's time. Look at all the successful shows now. They all followed in the footsteps of Arrested Development. Goddamn, it was just too good for this dumbass country.
Great news. Hopefully, people will get it this time and demand more. ...and it won't be on a different night each week so you never know when it's on, like last time. This show was ahead of it's time, and too smart for your basic "sitcom" audience. Many people need a laugh track to tell them when to laugh. I won't watch any show with a laugh track, except for "I Dream of Genie", because... well you know.
My friend said maybe te reason Arrested Development was so good because it was only 3 seasons. AD had no time to mess up so it stayed perfect. So many people say, "Aww man the 5th and 6th season of the office is soo bad!" Nobody says that for AD they just say, "This is the greatest show ever."
Unfortunately, one of the main reasons was because Two and a Half Men was on in the same time slot (Which wasn't an awful show) but after the Charlie Sheen thing, TaaHM is most likely not going to take off. So basically we had possibly one of the funnest shows of all time, get torn off the air because a semi-funny not very original show had more viewers, because it's full of penis jokes.
The thing is, this show is similar to Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Seinfeld ran for longer because of it's multi-camera set up, and it's laughtrack, and it's generally episode by episode basis. Curb Your Enthusiasm is VERY similar in style to AD, but it's ran longer because of HBO and Larry David's popularity from Seinfeld. AD had too long running of humor to attract new-comers easily. If it started on HBO, it would still be running.
@Bassbait From what I've heard it got canceled entirely because of Fox, Fox is becoming infamous for ruining television shows by constantly changing the time the show is supposed to air, playing episodes out of order, coming up with schedules that don't make sense. Arrested Development has a lot of long running humor but I was able to get into it in the middle of season two. If AR was canceled for that reason then hour long dramas wouldn't stand a chance.
@phillyx86x i don't care if this was a month ago. american's aren't stupid, but blanket statements like that definitely are, ya twat. Fox is just a piece of shit with Marketing.
i hate saying this out loud ( so to say), but this show will never come back, they all are professional and have moved on, sadly, even though this show is easily a top 5 sitcom ever, if not the best ever.
How is it that Arrested Development was cancelled when shows like Two and A Half Men and Everybody Loves Raymond are still on the air? One of the only true comedies television has ever seen... gone. Bring it back!
Arrested Development was really something special. My 74 year old grandmother just discovered it through Netflix. She's so heartbroken that her new favorite show has been canceled. I don't understand how this show could have been unsuccessful. I think it's perceived as a niche show when it really isn't. My nanna and I couldn't be more different but we both can sit down and watch this show again and again. Maybe it was just ahead of it's time.
@AceHalford I love this show. But it still only has a tiny (but vocal) minority who adore it. The "ENTIRE world treaured it" is a bit of a stretch. This show was and still is under most peoples radar.
@xoomphresh i love the show but i feel that there are some very alienating elements to it. the episode i just watched was the one right after buster lost his hand. you'd expect everyone to be much more somber but the show plays it for laughs. this plus the gay cop couple might not have been very accepted by the mainstream back then.
