@mattj101101 hey I hqve already rooted my galaxy s2 and am running lite'ning rom but wanted to try villian out do I follow the same process as shown in the video or use rom manager and clock work mod if you could explain or link me to a guide it wo uld be a great help
u mate are a legend i installed 4.0.1 ics on my galaxy s was very buggy i downloaded the optus orignal rom and it kept failing i didnt know u had to put it on the phone only not pda etc
Ok so i get all the way to 2mins 50secs and although i have downloaded the villain rom and put it in my samsung folder, it is nowhere to be seen when i try and find it after clicking on PDA. I guess it is not being found as it is not saved as a recognised file type? I can see that it is saved as a winrar zip archive folder, is this why it does not show up?
If so how do i get it to become the right file type to be seen by odin and the PDA button?!
@BudgetGaming No, I don't think you do as you're effectively replacing the entire firmware so you'd wipe any root access you had, (unless the custom ROM was pre-rooted), anyway.
@MrRdt1970 I think you should have bought an HTC Sensation, that would have been a lot easier for you. I'd recommend LauncherPro paid version for the sense like widgets and app draw, fancy widget for the Sense weather/clock widget and download the JPEG files of the sense wallpapers to finalise your HTC look.... alternatively, sell the SGS2 and buy a Sensation, then HTC do all the work of making it look like a HTC for you.
Best SGS2 videos around.....Hats off to you mate. Just got my Galaxy S2 today and rooted within 2 hours (Thanks to you).
Also, regarding flashing roms, Please let me know if there is any way to use CWM recovery for that purpose as I come to SGS2 from HDHD and very much a n00b to ODIN.
or, Is it possible to have a nandroid backup of my stock rom using odin before I flash and test any new roms?
i downloaded the villain rom and i tried to use odin as you say above but it would not recognize it? try to extract the file but still nothing? what am i doing wrong here
@MegaRooster19 Yes I think I did it was 4 pounds, I have no idea how many Australian dollars that is though. Erm it used to fix some kind of brick on the original SGS but I don't actually know what or if it'll do the same on the S2. I only want it to reset the counter personally, bricking is a bridge I'd cross if i ever unfortunately came to it.
By the way it's officially available for pre order now and I can get in on June 1st. Also, there is a very high chance that it will come with NFC. If it does can I still use this rooting guides. It's definitely the 1.2 ghz version too so yeah
@MegaRooster19 Not long to wait now!! You'll love it, it'll be the best £500 you've ever event on anything technology related. The rooting guide should work fine for the NFC version, all it does is replace the kernel which should be the same NFC or not :) personally I have the non-NFC version but I don't see why it wouldn't work :) 1.2ghz ftw :P
@MegaRooster19 Well firmware KE7 has just been released and that's rootable so yeah, just let me know your baseband, firmware version and kernel and I'll advise you on how to root :)
Yeah, it seems this ROM installs XWKE2 (newest firmware), roots, and gets rid of the yellow exclamation mark. If you wanted to you could always flash the O/C kernel as well, though then the "!" would return...Tbh I hadn't used the ROM before I made the video, I made the video on my 1st installation. It turns out there are no major changes. It is strictly a custom ROM but looks stock. Nice way to root, update and get rid of "!" all in one go though :)
Sweet, I'm be getting my phone in June so by then there'd probably be updates and others custom roms, when I get my phone I'll just ask you all the things then I suppose haha. By the way, all this development stuff isn't exclusive to just UK model phones right? Like if i get a galaxy s2 from every country, I'd always use the same methods on xda for each phone?
@MegaRooster19 Right, I don't know if you know but there are 2 versions of the S2, an Nvidia Tegra 2 1ghz version and an Exynos 1.2ghz with a Mali-400 GPU version, in the UK only the Exynos version is sold (it's the better model). I don't know where you live or what version will be sold in your country, as long as it's an Exynos version all these videos will work fine. I have no experience with the Nvida Tegra 2 version, I'd assume these methods WON'T work due to different kernels being needed.
Well I'll get the Australian version, how do I check the version once I get my phone? Is it in settings or on the box? So everything just depends on the version I get? Sounds ok
@MegaRooster19 On the front of the box it says 1.2ghz is shiny letters haha :D (means it's an Exynos), if you got an Nvidia Tegra 2 version it'd say 1ghz. As Australia is a wealthy nation it's probably going to get the better version as Samsung will be hoping for plenty of sales...
Oh right, it's definitely 1.2ghz, and if i9100 = exynos, and 1903 = nvidea, then it's definitely the Xynos i9100 version, so looks like I'm all set. Thanks again! :)
@MegaRooster19 Yeah, I'm pretty sure most territories are getting the 1.2ghz version, I've heard there will be an i9003 as well, an S2 with lesser specs. When is the device released in Australia? We've had it for a few weeks here now but there are massive stock shortages, Amazon.co.uk say despatched in 1-2 MONTHS :O!!
Most of the Optus brand stores say early June, there is no confirmed date however everyone is guaranteed for a June release. Any later than that and I'll shoot myself :/
@MegaRooster19 Here in the UK one first batch was sold then since then everywhere has been out of stock, amazon are quoting 1-2 months, someone on XDA needed a replacement phone and O2 (a UK network) said they'd have stock in 4-6 weeks....it's not looking good for people actually getting an S2. I suggest buying one from a proper shop (not online) on the day of release, that's how I got mine. O2 said next day delivery, some people still haven't got their phones yet...
Matt, seeing as I haven't even got my phone yet, once I do, all I'd have to do is follow this video and I'll have root, custom rom, no exclamation mark and the latest firmware?
So all in one video now? On a side note, what can you do with a custom rom and whats the difference?
This ROM is XWKE2, rooted, has stock kernel. It's deodexed. I've resigned all the stock apps with a new keyset, it's much easier to make mods to the apps in future. Villain Tweaks was a project of mine to test for modifying the apps in the S2 ROMs. I had issues since the pre-installed apps are signed by Samsung. I can now edit the apps on the phone to apply tweaks, with greater scope as to which files can be moded.
Can this work on the tmobile version?
