If it's a 12 volt drill just forget the battery altogether and wire it in to the cigarette lighter with a cord and plug from radio shack. All the amperage you need
Nice! I had to comment because I discovered this too but used an actual socket on the jack that happened to fit over the nut... The hook idea is WAAYYY Better!! :)
I'd rather have a sissor jack with a bolt head the same size as the lug nuts for a job like this. Spend $200 on a battery powered impact wrench & you can use the same tool to run the jack, then immediately go to the lug nuts without changing tools. Would even stop the complaining from the wimps about the lug nuts being on too tight.
@Sweeman0 Sure? I don't know exactly if there are differences, but ours looks similar enough and we've been using it for years - every autumn and spring twice per car on 4-5 cars to change winter/summer tires (=16-20 uses per year). And it's still working fine.
@bla287 Im quite sure, to be honest i was also using the car-jack you get with the car until my car came crashing down :/ now i only use a real car-jack that garages use, simple little thing, weighs a bit more but both faster and safer.
@Sweeman0 Oh, I see, then it actually is a different one because the one we use isn't one that came with the car. But aren't those included ones usually smaller than the one in the video?
@bla287 I don't know, it reminded me of a stock car-jack, and i guess the sizes are different depending on the size of the car. Better to be safe than sorry :)
@Sweeman0 These jacks are very durable, so you can use it as much as you please. They are however not as comfortable to use as an hydraulic jack... which I recommend if you change tires twice a year.
Also, you should always keep your limbs clear of the car when you work with a jack, hydraulic or not, because you can risk crush injuries! Always secure the car with extra fixed support if you are to work underneath the car when jacked! That was todays HSE lection!

No, its a heavy duty hook with a threaded end so that you can screw it in wood or something. Should be standard enough so that you can get it at a hardware store.
If you're thinking about using a drill as your regular car jack motivator, remember the drill battery will discharge over time whether you use it or not. Some recharable batteries can discharge to an unusable state in only a day all by themselves. So you could easily have a dead drill battery just when you need it the most out on the road somewhere.
I actually thought of this on my own after a little thought (and after failing to get the stock hook into the drill chuck for the chuck was too small). Unfortunately, my drill wasnt powerful enough to raise my car... :(

Ya know, I wonder how difficult it would be to rig a corded drill to hook onto the car battery.
Having a corded drill handy in the trunk would work better than worrying if the battery in a cordless is dead

I bought a $20 hydraulic car jack at Sears that fits in my Honda's truck and lifts the car faster and better than that. It never runs out of battery!

Seems like you run the risk of burning out the motor.
zac677 1 year ago
@zac677 Yeah, one should make sure that the drill is powerful enough to lift the car. My drill is 14,4V and I wouldn't recommend anything less.
stThicket 1 year ago
is the hook standard for the specific application of lifting a car jack with a drill ?

weld a bolt head on jack, use a socket on drill, eliminates the strain caused by the uneven turning offf the hook

nuothe11th 2 years ago
You need a powerful drill. Mine is 14,4V and thats just about enough.
stThicket 2 years ago
hm. mine's 18v... maybe my jack's inefficient. Car's a civic coupe so shouldn't have a weight problem.
nuothe11th 2 years ago
You also need to make sure you have the max torque gear activated, not the drilling gear, but the screwing one.

wow. best idea ever
