  • It was a GREAT movie

  • This was, and still is, a great sailing movie with 12-meter boats. Kind of mean for the Playtapus skipper to slash the spinnaker of the US boat with his boom. Though, even with that the Americans came through and won the race. Very exciting movie.

  • Love that film!

  • What is the name of the soundtrack?

  • help does anyone know what the symbol is called on the first spin? you know the wind God.

  • I was in it. Best training of my life- Boatspeed

  • The opening I -14 scenes were the best part. Would have been better without any dialog, just photography.

  • hey da40flyer, I got the CD from a real generous guy right here on u tube. Thanks for your response

  • @TheBrevo Very cool man, hope you enjoy it!

  • @da40flyer1 ya know, I do enjoy it! BUT, I figured there would be some music on there that wasn't. They should make Wind Soundtrack II. They won't and there won't be Wind II because only like 10 people on the planet understood this movie. Too bad, eh!?!

  • This movie made 9 knots look exciting. :)

  • still in the time when the americas cup was about sailing instead of designing the best boat.. and winning in court

  • is there anywhere the whole movie??

  • An oddity in the filming of this. I guess it's possible, but how is it that, especially in such close quarters, that the leeward boat manages to hammer the windward boat? In general, that sure isn't the pattern.

  • @dog4company Uh. Wait, I shot every word of BS you posted out of the water and backed it up with facts.. and I'm the idiot? And you didn't watch the movie, yet stated random BS about how America could only win a race like this in Hollywood? Like I said.. longest winning streak in sports history, so you couldn't be more wrong. PS: Nope, I'm hardly a Hollywood fanboy, on the contrary I was actually out sailing a 12m yacht last weekend while you were at home making shit up on youtube.

  • @EstorilEm I totally agree with you! And it will take another 100 plus years for any nation to break that record!

  • @dog4company Jesus youtube is full of complete freaking idiots. Have you even seen the movie? The entire plot revolves around the fact that the USA LOST the cup to the Australians in 1983, ending the longest winning streak in sporting history; 132 years. The first part of the movie revolves around this loss. 4 years later in the next challenge, the USA won back the cup after soundly beating the Australians 4-0 - aka the main plot of the movie and the scene depicted in this clip. Any questions?

  • where can we find the original? |

  • This is an excellent movie with plenty of sailing, which I like, in it. Though the skipper of Platypus was mean when he tore their spinnaker ( purposely). I have seen this movie a few times, through rental, and always enjoy it.

  • I want the soundtrack to this movie...tape, CD, LP...I don't care. As I know it, there is no such thing. There should be, though!

  • There is a soundtrack, it can be ordered over the net. I may or may not have a copy myself and listen to it before a days racing...

  • @TheBrevo there is a such thing :) I have one :)

  • @TheBrevo There is a soundtrack. It is VERY hard to find it though. Mine had to be shipped from Japan.

  • Ahh the good ol' 12 Metres. A style of racing that has sadly passed into history.

  • @KiwiKugai ARRR no there 14 skiffs there still raced and still raced very much so in the UK

  • Australja po 132 latach odbiera puchar Ameryce.

  • anyone have the entire movie to upload? Would be much appreciated!

  • Loved this movie!! Was the red boat originally french kiss??

  • Loved this movie!!

  • Ahhhh , I miss racing. All of the yelling and screaming

  • a supersized masthead spinnaker on a fractional rig don't drop the rig

  • @Johnmonty85 Did you see at 1:35 how the spinnaker rolls and "pops" the rigging?? I thought it was going to take it down

  • @Johnmonty85

I did read that in making of that scene, they went through 5 masts.

Anyway, two things. This movie is based on the 1983 loss and 1987 race winning it back. This isn't Hollywood making something up to make it look like the USA won. Also, look who currently holds the America's Cup right now..... BMW Oracle( an American team) beat Alinghi last year for the Cup. The Cup is back in US hands again and will be defended in San Francisco.

  • ac 72 spinker on a 12 metre yea right

  • 懐かしい。この映画は大好きである。最近、日本がアメリカズカップに参加できていないのが残念。よし、大金持ちになって金を集めるか・・・

  • the wind is a whore i mean its blowing every guy on the planet

  • @TheMikeman63 so original

  • This is very stupid movie, technically and.... why is that so , everytime must win english speaking....is coppola xenophobic? no he is not , he is just hateing other languages....becouse english speaking are good fucking guys and others are bad guys...so if you wanna be good you must speak fucking english. In whole history of our planet there is no such huge demagogic amount of shits like those produce from Hollywood against other nations and languages in last 70? years

  • Full Sail Scott! Coppola style!!!

  • what ARE the name of the songS?

  • The DVD can be purchased from Amazon ($11.00).

  • i am looking fore the soundtrack. in Germany its not availible.

    THX

  • @RCONKELpunktDE i have soundtrack

  • Does anybody have info or history on the dont tread on me flag in this film? You see it at the 50-53 second mark. It white stars on a blue field with a red border red rattle snake. Is it a one off? Looks different that the Navy Jack flag or the traditional yellow Gadsden flag.

  • I prefer Smack Down Under....... :)

  • great soundtrack

  • Great segment, but you cut out the tv announcers covering the event. I loved their sheer shock and amazement at the giant womper sail.

  • Where can I buy the DVD?

  • i will get sailing too but its winter and i watch thsi video because the film is SOO NICE

  • Best Movie EVER. I love this movie, have watched it a million times, wore out my old VHS, got the DVD. Inspirational, not great from a dramatic standpoint, but as a sports story its phenomenal.

  • GET VIRTUAL SKIPPER 5!!! It's like wind the game! If you don't already have it...

  • @grdnangl172: haha, yup, I have Virtual Skipper 5, been playing since VS 3. Absolutely awesome game.

  • It's not a Francis Ford Coppola movie. He was an executive producer on the movie. Carroll Ballard, who also did "The Black Stallion" and "Never Cry Wolf" directed it.

  • I LOVE underwater scenes !!!

Its so amazing i can watch it for hours. Older ac boats looks so much better than today boats.

  • blue, that's quite an idiotic comment. Just wanted to tell you so.

  • whats the name of this song?? I keep searching for the soundtrack I love it! but I can't find it anywhere...

  • Does anyone know why the regular spinnakers kept on ripping? I mean I know that was the plot line that led to Jake's eventual ejection from the boat and the womper scene. But, what would be the technical reason for it? They were stupid and didn't make the spinnaker's strong enough for the Australian winds?

  • Spinnakers are made from thin material they rip all the time if something like a spinnaker pole from another boat touched it, it would probably rip. They are made that way because it is such a big sail if it was made out of stronger material the sail wouldn't work aerodynamically with the boat.

  • I know that. Makes sense I guess, but seeing actual America's Cup races often times it's the spinnaker pole that breaks then the sail itself( Team New Zealand kept on having that problem when they lost to Alinghi. Also had bad luck of a mast breaking). I have yet to see an actual spinnaker tear in real races by just having wind tear it( since no captain would purposely tear a spinnaker of a competitor unlike Nimble.....)

  • It needs to come out on BLUE-RAY!!!!!

  • I found it on iTunes.

  • Comment removed

  • I worked on this movie. Wish I could download it somewhere.

    Can't find a copy anywhere.

    It was great fun.

  • it's a classic!

  • i would love to train on an america cup class sailing boat

    also a man of war

    or a 18th century frigate

  • I love to hear the boat wanting to go fast once the Whomper was brought out...I mean the boat comes out of the water and just makes all the nasty noises before going real fast.....

  • That spinnaker is AMAZING. That was always my favorite part of the movie and it ticked me off when the other boat speared their sail. I remember seeing this in the theatre. There's a scene of dead calm when the boats are just sitting there, and the sailors in the audience started laughing -- been there, done that! -- and there was this lady behind me whispering, "I don't understand. Why is that funny?" Lady, it's sooooo funny.

  • no wonder. sailing is kinda dying out. even those races with huge corporate sponsors like vendee globe or rolex cup are just barely surviving. pretty soon, there'll be like 100 people in the world who would know what the heck is tacking or spinnaker. kinda sad.

  • I wish to see a reproduction of a this film!

Sailing movies are not enough produced.

  • I LOVE this movie! The mast came down during that spinnaker shot so dont try it at home lol...I still think it looks great

  • just to add its not a francis ford copola film, he didn't direct it

  • Dude. I have never sailed but it makes me wanna go. :~) Cool video!

  • Great movie... and fantastic score by Basil Poledouris, too!

  • Great movie.

  • Wind is the best movie ever made I have watched it at least 50 times and it still doesent bore me! Simply FANTASTIC

  • Thanks for uploading! I watched this as a young fella and wanted desperately to sail the Sydney Hobart yacht race one day. The good news is that I did my first in 2004 and now have my sights set on the Fastnet & Newport-Bermuda races!

  • I have seen it at least 5 times... Great movie!

  • where can i see it? i want to see it so much

  • After seeing Morning Light Sunday evening it's always good to remind myself that a sailing movie can be good.

  • Wind's cinematography is first rate. Like many sailors, I have a sail affectionately named The Whomper. Mine is a beautiful, red and yellow 150% nylon drifter, poled out wing-on-wing. Down wind, in light air she gets me home every time.

  • i just find it on netflix and its a very good movie... remenber its a m,ovie not a documentary dont expect reality as it happens but as the director decides it should happen otherwise a very good movie

  • While there are a couple of glaring mistakes that I doubt an America's Cup competitor would make in this situation, these boats are smoking downwind! The wake is huge!

  • Yeah, great spinnaker, however I'm kinda glad that they didn't win with it. It forced Parker & Bass to outsail Neville, and just be better sailors than Jack.

Great film! It inspired me to get out there and learn how to sail - and I don't regret it for one minute. I love sailing!

  • whoever came up with the below statement was clearly a fucking uneducated moron.Because this film was incredible.zx

  • does anybody know where to find the scene where she ties the whomper to her car in the desert.

  • the car scene in the desert is just a much smaller prototype. but my advice would be to buy the video on amazon, should be quite cheap.zx

  • The whomper kicks total ass!!!!!

  • Jennifer Grey's nose looks much better here than it does now...

  • fantastic

  • fantastic the sail number us 38 this is a 12 metre called Magic does anyone know this for sure

  • I think you're right...Magic is located in The Netherlands now and I believe her number is 38.

  • C'mon- you aren't allowed to make contact with another boat. The black boat needed to be a dq. And what was with them showing both boats going upwind, then all of a sudden they both are running with their kites up? The finish line cant be both upwind and down wind at the same time.

  • final race, they said no rules in the final race, and it's a movie

  • Can anyone tell me where to find this movie on the internet???

  • the best film in the world

  • 12 meeter with a mast head kite... big deal...

  • Is it just me or are 12 meters a thing of beauty.

  • your right mate - the classic 12 metres from 1960's - 1987 they were the real racing yachts. Not to mention the one and only "AUSTRALIA II - 1983" The yacht that broke the longest ever standing record in sporting history 132 years.

  • Did you guys see Diamond Head in the background?

  • wow

  • Coppola's movie...ahh...hello...Carroll Ballard, baby!

  • my favourite film

  • can we just marvel at the fact that they are putting a masthead kite on a rig that was designed for a fracional rigged spinnaker? Genious. I hear they dropped like 5 masts filming this because the boat couldn't take the extra sail area

  • Yes...but you just cant mess with the Womper...

  • And it was five masts well spent

  • ahh great, americans pumping themselves up again

  • Well make your own damn movie then, whoever you are.

  • well, I believe the movie was loosely based upon Connors losing the cup and then the effort to win it back. Funny thing is that the version with the boat sinking and everyone dying just didn't test well with the focus groups ;)

  • At the last scene, you can see that Matthew Modine (Will Parker) isn't really steering. Another skipper on the starboard side is correcting him.

  • "If a boat collides with another it means disqualification... even if you have right-of-way, a deliberat collision is a DSQ" not if they have right of way, if you have to change course its a protest and if they dont move and u hit them there fault

  • Not to be abnoxious, but who cares? The movie was about the excitement of sailing, not the rules. Star Wars movies broke several hundreds scientific principles, but literally hundreds of millions of people watched and enjoyed them. Just let it go...

  • Ahh yes when the twelve meters ruled the ocean

  • sif USA yould ever beat AUS...

  • we did - multiple times...

  • great filming entertainment;well edited and captures the match racing spirit with a little bit of free licence for visual effect.

  • "Let's roll tack this mother fucker!"

  • every scene is a different day :-(

    but great film :-)

  • You noticed that too? Actually, more like different week! ;-))

  • this movie is so addicting.

  • Does anyone have this song ??

  • this song isnt on the soundtrack for the movie

  • Pretty cool, but i mean seriously who would tear someone elses spinnaker...wtf

  • That's not a spinnaker... it's a "Whomper"!

(If a boat collides with another it means disqualification... even if you have right-of-way, a deliberat collision is a DSQ.)

  • Even if the skippers have agreed "no rules, no protests"?

  • Yes, even if the boats have agreed no protests.

There are referees out on the racecourse for cup races. But NO ONE would EVER agree to "no rules".

The whole point of match racing is to place yourself where the rules give you advantage. Otherwise it would be like playing chess with no rules. "Oh, I think my Knight will move sideways this time". Pointless.
