I think the difference in time is pretty negligible. Although the paint won't cause an decrease in boil time, it will help protect against corrosion, which is aggravated by the flame.
I'm sorry but that's not enough evidence. I'll require at least 3 burns each, verifying equal fuel, room-pot-stove-water temp measured with each cup on each of the stoves, 6 runs each. I'll be looking for close if not identical temperatures and times. Does the right stove, albeit constructed similarly, run hotter then the left? You lit the left stove first but the right stove burned out first indicating higher fuel flow. 6 tests should show us the answer, which I believe will be no different
Tinny said it made a "substantial difference" when he was selling them a couple years ago. Now that he's not and after hiram made a video proving otherwise, he did a backflip and tried to cover his errant statement. He essentially said hiram fudged his results of "almsot no difference) and backpacker magazine's test was clearly way off (30-40% improvement), but his "substantial difference" was "closer to the truth". I think it's clear there is no substantial difference either.
I wouldn't bother with the black paint. As well as hardly making any difference in boil time, they take longer to make, and the user will be worrying about scratching the paint off and all that.
Great comparision video I had very similar results from a test that i did awhile back. I have come to the conclusion that it's not worth the time or trouble to paint the bottm of pots .
Same results everyone else is getting. Hardly any difference to speak of. I was convinced for years that my black bottom boy scout pot boiled faster than my clean one. I still enjoy the freedom of not having to scrub though. (Talkin' in the fire, not on a alc stove.) Thanks for posting this side by side test. No way you can argue with the result.
3:28. The stove on the right seems to be struggling a bit more. The flame jet seems to pulse. I think the stove on the left is a better functioning stove for some reason? See 4:10 to 4:29. The pot on the right really struggles.
@smokeeater908
I've got a fantastic idea!! I'll email you pics this week.
Yeah but the black paint looks so much cooler!! Lol.

Just use Esbit or wood a time or 2 and the bottoms will be black anyway... :)

@MrClean417 but you have to be thorough in your tests or they are just examples not proofs.

Good solid comparison video. I tried it myself with Heineken pots a couple of years ago. I don't see the need to paint the pots.

Great video, I have run these test several times myself. Never have been able to see the paint make any real difference.

I wonder if there would be a difference if you used a stove that was not a side burner?? Cool test sir!!

I would go with the black paint. Oh and it looks great as well.
