Joyful, fun creatiovity belongs to the young before they all get woprn down with money concerns and the trivia of material existence. I suppose it's because 'hope' is something alluring in the distance, and when you;re young you have a bigger future.
I'm just getting into a full-blown love affair with The Kinks; I'd heard and enjoyed the radio-friendly songs ("You Really Got Me", "Lola", "Tired of Waiting For You", etc.). But just recently I listened to Village Green Preservation Society and became hooked. I just bought and listened to the Arthur CD 3 times already since getting it by mail yesterday. Looks like my next acquisition will be Muswell Hillbillies....this song's charm (like many other Kinks Kompositions) is inescapable!
@itwontbez I envy you. I did that back in the 70's when Sleepwalker was the current album. Got to go back and discover all this wonderful music. Get ready for a long and unbelievably enjoyable journey...
@woodyt56 lol It seems like every Kinks fan I communicate with has a different favorite album from the other! But I like that, it shows how diversified Ray Davies' song-writing was and how well The Kinks re-invented themselves over the years.
@itwontbez the same thing happened to me about 7 months ago...i too liked the radio songs...but sunny afternnon stood out to me,so i picked up face to face.which i really loved...then village green, and that was it for me...i have since bought all the deluxe versions of all the pye releases...and have moved on through the seventies stuff.......but this albums ranks right up with village green and arthur as my favorites..
I've been listening to this song since it came out back in the early seventies. But back then I never dreamed that many years later- I would have my three year
old grandson Jesse listen and sing along with me as well every time I brewed up a cup of tea for myself.- Saw the Kinks back then preform this song (and many others
Louis, you sure have been kollecting Kinks longer than me - I was born a week or two after the wonderful Muswell Hillbillies was released! I am a child of my time for sure...keep rockin
My 17 yr old daughter's pet name fits nicely here - when I want a cuppa tea I sing: "Make a cuppa teeeaaa......hallelujah, Rosie Bree" She loves it. Not!
@ColyTom yes, I have a sneaking suspicion she secretly likes the song - just hates making me cuppa tea! And teenagers are obliged to 'hate' their parents' music after all...
Having been a fan since the mid-sixties (yes, I'm older than dirt) I love this song along with a zillion others. In fact, The Kinks never made a bad album in this fanatics mind. If one listens to the critics, the only thing the Kinks did was in the mid to late 60s; however, I even love their so-called "over-the-top" rock operas from the 70s such as the "Preservations Act 1 &2" and of course "Soap Opera." Listen to the cut off of "Soap Opera" called "Ducks on the Wall." One of the funniest.
They're brilliant aren't they- and, still, so underrated. I don't know their work as well as I gather you do, but I know enough of it to say I've been amused, gladdened, and deeply move by it. Davies has such musical and lyrical range.
Yes indeed they are brilliant. I just counted my Kink's albums and have 35 - 32 of which are on vinyl (GRIN). Perhaps I've been kollecting them longer than you as I bought the 1st and self-titled album in 1964. Any Kink's fan is a friend of mine!
@shirtshine73blitz it wasnt an album i was faillier with, till i watched a recording on tv of this track. Its now been ordered for next months birthday from the wife. be safe.

'Muswell Hillbillies' is such an awesome album! Too bad about the buried vocals in the mix though, not the least on this song. In this clip at least the lead vocal sounds a bit louder, but the chorus could still have more power!
I want to see a fan video to this song, and the part where he's listing off all the times to have tea, just the situation getting more and more violent in ways of giving people tea.

Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant! Love Ray, love the Kinks! Perfect, and I've been drinking tea lately from morning till night. He's right too - it's good for whatever ails you. I'm actually quite sick right now, but fighting through it. Although I get tired of it sometimes, I can't stop drinking the tea - morning, noon and night. Have another cuppa tea!!!
