This looks like the Bluebird ....can anyone confirm? ....I saw many a great shows there, but this wasn't one of them...I wouldn't be there for another 10 years!
I was AT this show!!! They were the first "Over 21" show I saw after my B-day the year before in 91. My buddy's band were opening for them, never heard of them, and was SO blown away!!
Too bad Jeff and Jay had that falling out. But then we wouldn't have Wilco. Uncle Tupelo was one of the most influential alt. Country bands of all time. Love em
Wilco nor Son Volt can hold a candle to Uncle Tupelo. Saw them in Portland, Maine just as "Still Feel Gone" was coming out. They played for 3 hours and burned the place down. Awesome, intense and fun show. Hung out with them after. Cool guys. I Miss My Uncle Tupelo!
who is better? that answer is extremely subjective. Uncle Tupelo was a great roots rock/alt country band that bore two of the great midwestern songwriters. As for saying that the yankee HF was shit, many musical critics would beg to differ. YHF is a guiding light in the cloudy indie rock scene that was the early 2000's, Farrar's "Trace" is one of the definitive roots rock records. I don't even see how you can begin to compare them without bringing your own predispositions into your judgement

Really, why argue about that? When neither Son Volt or Wilco can hold a candle to this. Farrar and Tweedy have peaked. The first Son Volt album is fuckin' crazy good, and the first Wilco lp is rad. Bothof their second records are good. After that they both got lost, or forgot, or were bored with what they did best. But here, Sweet Jesus! UT are as killer as anyone ever... so what more can you ask of someone?
i'm 14 and just started getting into uncle tupelo. it's cool when i recognize songs that my dad used to blast in the car when i was a kid. he's a musician himself and went to high school with jeff. he's always kicking himself for never jamming with him or anything. haha
yo thank you loveishell! I was a wee little lad when tupelo was rocking so this means a lot to me...one of my favorite songs ever...they are so damn young
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ok, while uncle was great...since the split i think jay has done better. the first couple of wilco albums were great...a.m. and being there were brilliant...but after that i think tweedy started to live his own hype...foxtrot hotel is shit. now son volt's trace and wide swing are better than being there and anything wilco has done...and son volts latest is quite good too. jay has stayed grounded while tweedy has become the rock star that he was reluctant to be back in the day
The fact that tweedy is a rock star dosent make him any less of a musitian! Hes just changed it up a bit reccently, your music has to evolve. p.s. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot's a Great Album!! : )
I don't know of any "musitians" in existence. Oh, wait, did you mean MUSICIAN? Sorry, it's hard to understand you when you butcher the spellings of simple words.
This is great - one of my top 5 bands EVER. Had the pleasure of seeing them three times live, though the last two were on Anodyne tour where it was obvious they were about to bust up. Three piece era was the best.
i agree. as a musician in general, tweedy shines much much more in wilco than he did in uncle tupelo. i much prefer wilco, though its no question uncle tupelo were a great band
A friend of mine thinks that Jay Farrar's songs are better in UT, but I still think Tweedy was the better of the two songwriters at the time. Since then, it seems that Tweedy has surrounded himself with progressive players and Farrar has done the opposite, likely intentionally. Wilco is what it is because of Tweedy's ability to change. That change is in himself... and his members.
haha very astute - they don't rip em off, but they sometimes come close, most of all on this song. and yeah, this totally looks like a late 80s Mats video. And Wilco is good, but Uncle Tupelo is definitely my favorite. Seems like there's countless examples of ex-members from really good bands forming slightly wimped-out new bands, then achieving like double their previous success.
buddy...I know from where you come. But if the music scene twas IT...there would NOTHING....because the music scene is pretty lame. I grew up in small town Indy and went to IU............so...well...wht the fuck am I arguing about?
they won't be back together. jeff reuniting with jay is like a women deciding it would be a good idea to get back into an abusive relationship. jeff is free from that oppressive, jealous baby. besides with a few exceptions, jay's songs are all freaking boring.
I ate, drank, and breathed this band back then. My oldest sons middle name is Jay for crying out loud. God bless Jay and Jeff for the years of listening joy they have given me all these years.
I attended there final concert, may 2nd, '94 (I think) at the late, great mississippi nights. I sat at the side, stage left...perfect seats. In there second to last song, Heidhorn took over the drums, for the first time since he left. With only Farrar and Tweedy remaining on stage, Mike clicked his drumsticks twice and they kicked into 'Lookin' for a way out'.,,when F and T hit that harmony in the third verse, 'lookin' for a waaay out'...you had to be there I guess.
I would be so stoked for an Uncle Tupelo reunion right about now. Wilco and Son Volt seem to be running out of steam, and that could be a great shot in the arm...
You must be kidding! Wilco's one of the most written about bands in America, and Son Volt just made their best record in years. I'd love to see reunion too, but Jay and Jeff are doing just fine.
gee, thanks. i guess i'm old. i went to this concert, w/out knowing who UT was. i loved tho. i think it was 2 bucks. back when jake's had that wall between the two rooms. hey, i heard it's jake's again.

Jay: call Jeff.
We need your music again. Can everyone post this on every UT video?
Thank You from your very passionate fans. Requested on 6/17/11.

@mkerwin1 Sad thing: Jay hates Jeff. Jeff hates Jay.
What they need to learn is to fucking suck it up - a lot of that stuff is in the past - and make up.

tweety is obviously a great songwriter, but he's really underrated as a bass player.
some of the bassline in UT songs are super melodic and all over the place. kinda like an alt-country McCartney?

@peyoteugly An alt-country Mike Watt, to be more exact.
