@SavHub Couldn't agree more. As I do my homework I listen to Angela's playlist. However, every time the video skips I get the most obnoxious advertisements. Although I understand their purpose, I still wish you could at least skip them all rather then having to mute it for 16 seconds.

@listentodutchhouse excuse me, kind sir, but from time to time i make mistakes in my vocabulary because of some thoughts i don't think twice and I believe I'm not the single human on the Earth to do that. P.S. : For the fact that I am 14 years old and that I listen to Chopin and Pavarotti frequently for a few years I could say that I'm a little more cult than people my age. Correct me if I'm wrong :) .
I must say I had never heard her rendition of my favorite aria and definitely she is up there with the greatest performance of Casta Diva I thought no one could reach of Montserrat Caballe... but this lady is up there.
Can I just say... GORGEOUS DRESS! This is one of my favourte arias, and she sings it beautifully, but gosh, what a frock. :) Thanks for posting the vid! :)
She's only OK. She lacks the pathos that this aria demands.
Callas is still my preferred as it should be since she used this aria, probably one of the most difficult ever written, to warm up prior to going on stage. Thanks!
Norma is one of my favorite operas, but Angela is not a "standard" in this role. Her tone is too dark and "heavy" for this aria. The amazing thing about her is that I have heard her sing everything from contralto to coloratura capably. That's amazing. Also, mezzos with good upper ranges are my favorite, and she sure comes close. I still don't think anyone can touch Callas in this role.
@79barkingspider You are quite right. Her voice is not right for this role. She is OK here and there but the voice timbre is not suitable. For the whole opera a much bigger, fuller, richer and more agile voice is required. It is a different matter to record a few arias from performing the whole opera on stage. In a recording studio it is a lot easier. You can do several takes and stop and start but live on stage is a different story. Also it is quite long and a lot of stamina is needed.
@79barkingspider If you are interested to hear the spectacular coloratura singing look on you tube for Callas singing "D'amore al dolce impero" from ""Armida" particularly the 1952 recording. You will see what I mean. Callas had a 3 octave range which is very rare, which meant that she could reach very low notes with equal ease as high notes up to E6.
franciscojavier2707 No spanish at all, but because our heritage of latin language I understood every thing you wrote about this Romanian nightingale. Your words reflects your profound inteligence, your culture as long with your great taste of opera. There's no one better then Angelica right now. and indeed she takes me to heaven with her beatiful voice. You should see and listen her at Kennedy Center Honnoring Grace Bumbry. She is magnificent Don Javier thank youso much for your trmendous words!
She has a celestial voice! And she's A Romanian beaty, too.Hope she will divorce easely of that sucker. Good luck, diva you are our Godess in Carpathian mountains!
It is strange that now the fans of Angela, they look beautiful singing of the soprano and underestimate the valuable work even Callas. Great not only for voice, interpretation and personification, if not for the restoration he did. The strange thing is that even if one thinks that is better than Callas, all comparisons are precisely Callas, Caballe or Sutherland not ... jehje, I think there can see which version or interpretation is really the standard at the time =) Very good Gheorghiu
She has a celestial voice! And she's A Romanian beaty, too.Hope she will divorce easely of that sucker. Good luck, diva you are our Goddess in Carpathian mountains!

THE voice of THE GODDESS: good bye Callas, hello Gheorghiu! But the damned constant camera action is enough to make one dizzy! Keep the camera shot on her from one or two angles, not one or two every milli-second!
Strange but I like this singing much better than Callas/ Callas is too sharp, non melodious, especially later Callas. Callas can't play with her voice like Georghiu can. This one seems in possession of full power of her voice and she never goes to the limit and Callas is on the limit all the time. I honestly cannot understand why people like Callas of the end of her career at all. Probably only as the memory of the beginning and middle of her career.
@Nushika9 I'm not saying Gheorghiu isn't talented. She 's fabulous. This is a very well sung Casta Diva (and in her CD album a nice Ah bello a me ritorna) but this is like so many beautifully performed concert & recital versions I've heard from Leontyne Price, Renee Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko & Inessa Galante; gifted but who can't sing all of Norma. In recent years only Jane Eaglen has been an outstanding Norma. Again, just Casta Diva isn't all of Norma!
@OperaMystery80 I do not know the entire opera. I sang another lyrics on the melody of Casta Diva myself. You can check it out on my channel, the name is "Bezhezk". So I know this aria. I can't myself of course sing like Gheorghiu, Gallante, Netrebko, etc. I never worked seriously on my voice and never was the professional, but I know very well how to exercise and to develop voice, achieving perfection or almost. Dramatic difficulties of the part of Norma I am not much interested to discuss.
agreed. no one can match callas's norma. although i heard colors in gheorghius voice reminiscent of callas, im curious to hear angela do the entire opera. one aria out of the opera does not make norma norma.
@ivantwill Exactly what I said. But today's major sopranos are scared to death of singing Norma! They just sing Casta Diva in recital. They're such chickens. Very rarely you hear Norma somewhere in some European opera company. They don't have it in America (when was the last time they had Norma at the Met ?) or major world opera houses (not even at La Scala, where the crowds and critics are vicious). Fleming, Gheorgiu, Netrebko and others today can't sing Norma. It belongs to Callas.
I agree with you. Since Caballe and Sutherland, one considered the successor to Callas in the most general and the other, the continuation of their tradition, there has been no standard should be. Standard is madefor a coloratur soprano, which is not Gheorghiu ... Callas could be the teacher of Gheorghiu because she managed as any from the low notes to the treble, and look her low was almost contraltino or mezzosoprano and her treble was light, also she was master of coloratura.
@Alleeexoscm Oh, GOD! Maria Callas is gone. Angela Gheorghiu is alive and well. Pray God for that! There two sopranos of different time. One comes from Julliard School of Music, in Manhattan, NY and the other one comes from Comunism Romanian after four years of Lyceum of Music and another 4 or 5 of Romanian Music Conservatorium just enough to be admitted as soprano at Covent Garden. There's no one better then her. So please let's be nice to her, enjoy her singing and please the God for HIs gift!
@OperaMystery80 You are right most sopranos today don't sing Norma because THEY CAN'T. Norma is LONG, it is HARD, it needs tremendous technique, and stamina. I heard Callas singing Norma live at La Scala in the 50s. It was an unforgettable experience as were all the other operas I heard her sing live. I cannot think of any other opera performances I have attended since then (and I have attended very many) who have left such an impression on me. I have seen a couple of Normas since........
@OperaMystery80 ...but they weren't worth it. I don't bother now. It is a waste of time. Callas interpreted each character because she bothered to study and understand them. Most others, including Sutherland etc just sing the notes. It is not about a pretty voice and high notes. Can you name one modern soprano who could sing "In mia man" or "Deh non volerli vittime" in a credible way? Or take on Medea? Callas didn' t take short cuts to "save her voice" She would regard it as dishonest.
@Ariadne7710 Callas loved Caballe as Norma; Caballe came to see Callas in Paris to get advice on how to sing Norma. Caballe did a great job and she might still count as a "modern"singer; she sang opera actively through the 60's, 70's and 80's. I also like Shirley Verrett as Norma, also singing it in the 70's/80's. But in our current time no one sings Norma. Callas is the winner on that one;; she was the one and only true Norma
@OperaMystery80 Although I have not heard Caballe live singing Norma from the recordings I have heard she was fine. I would say she is the next best but a long way behind. What separates Callas from the rest is not just the vocal rendition but the interpretative aspect. In scenes of intense drama and distress she conveys those feelings in a very real way. Her duet with Adalgisa in this particular recording is equally moving. And the last aria "Deh non volerli vittime" is heartbreaking.
If Gheorgiu is so good at this, why doesn't she perform the entire Norma, instead of just the Casta Diva & Ah bello a me ritorna? Today's opera stars can't sing all of Norma. A few now and then do it justice, namely lesser known European, Spanish/Latin Americans, but not the major stars. Fleming & Gheorghiu can sing Casta Diva & Ah Bello a me Ritorna but that's it. The role is hard and too associated with Callas whose superiority everyone's afraid of. I like Elinor Ross after Callas
@OperaMystery80: Callas was stupid enough not to protect her voice: she sang too much, too high, and too loud, and as a result she was out of the business quite early. Gheorghiu made it clear in her interviews that protecting her voice for the long term is her key criterion in choosing her repertoire. When asked about Norma she said "not yet". From the mere fact that Gheorghiu sings Casta Diva very well, it doesn't follow that she must perform the entire Norma. It's a non sequitur.
@SavHub Callas wasn't stupid nor "out of the business" early. She sang through 4 decades - the 40's (when she started as a teenager), the 50's, the 60's and the 70's. Her career was 40 years long. If she sang too much, too high, too loud, what an awesome gift she gave to us for that. Even if it means having vocal problems later on, it was still a glorious comet that passed in the world of opera. Callas will still be talked about in 100 years, but Gheorgiu ?
I listen to this rendition of Casta Diva about 3 times daily...It's how I meditate & calm down...I wish someone would upload her recording of "Ah bello a me ritorna" as well (as a separate clip).
You must be very ignorant to call Maria Callas, stupid. Callas was another time, she went through WWII, back and fower from NY to Grece, then Italy, then went finally she understand the mistake of singing different roles, was to late for her voice. She was not loud, or not to loud, but contrary, an amazing musician, and she did adapted her voice to the caracter. Listen to Butterfly, she is different, listen to Tosca, she is different, and so on. She re-discover Norma, Sonnambula...
Agree with Ariadne that Angela's Visse d"arte is wonderful. Here she sings sweetly but the camera work - all dutch angles, cuts and constantly on the move - is an unworthy distraction from the dignity of her performance.
@HiroAkemi82 You are so right. I was thinking tonight about great Sopranos around right now that are living in the shadow of Callas, Caballe and Sutherland and others. It has got to be hard for fantastic sopranos like Angela GHEORGHIU and contemporary artists. They need love too and Angela is absolutely a great Lyric Soprano and actress. If you read this Angela, we do love you too!
We need to realize how much work and sacrifice people in opera put in and show them the respect they deserve.

Some people keep comparing artists. Callas, Angela, Dessi, Tebaldi are all different artists and should not be compared. They are unique, stop comparing people!
@AnoMundi When they make new operas and are the first to sing those songs then people will stop comparing them, otherwise until then every woman who sings Carmen or any other piece will be compared to the woman who sung it before her. and her before her.
Excuse my spelling typos! Many violinists make a beautiful sound and have a good technical command of their instrument ... but not all can play Paganini and combine the expressive beauty needed to thrill and move an audience. For me, great Bel Canto divas and divos are akin to the great violin virtuosos!
I like her, but there is something strange. This recording was taken in a studio and she sings beautifully here, but when I listen to her live performances (of an aria or a whole opera) she doesn't look so good at me... then, the question I have is: is she that good she looks or does she become good by using modern technologic cheats? Well, I don't know what to think.
It matters not whether she is Romanian or Greek. She has the most marvellous voice , and I can listen to her for hours at a time. Whatever she sings, she sings with passion and assurance and it is a foregone conclusion that she will go down in Opera History as one of the Greats. She is marvellous!
Dio quando la gente si può finalmente smettere di sabbering su Callas tutto il tempo? C'erano e ci sono Normas tanti altri ottimi in giro. E il greco Metal Sound non è sempre stato eccellente sia. Lei è e d a d. Angela è posta aliv e certamente una delle più brillanti jeqwels in vita al giorno d'oggi opera
She has an amazingly beautiful tone. Up there with Sills (who has the most heartbreakingly beautiful version) or Sutherland, whos version is the most astonishingly powerful, this is the best I've heard. Callas version is not really at this level.

A question here - how easy is it for a soprano such as Angela to move into Bel Canto roles ... I mean at music college, is Coloratura taught as an option? How is it decided that a soprano is a certain type? Pardon the ignorance, but I do feel she has a wonderful voice, but would she be able to sing roles such as Lucia, Lucrezia Borgia, Roberto Devereux, Beatrice etc? ... I hope she can and does!
@hayyu2008 To sing belcanto you need a voice with an excellent range, exceptional top notes, great agility, clarity, amazing breath control and great stamina. Also you need the ability to sing very long legato lines. A voice must have some of these qualities naturally (agility in particular) before attempting to "learn" the bel canto repertoire. No matter how much you want to do it if the vocal cords are not able to do it then best not to try. AngelaGeorgiu's voice is not suitable.
@Ariadne7710 ... Many thanks for your answer. I guess there are many who aspire to sing Bel Canto, but just do not have all the qualities needed. I suppose a beautiful-sounding voice is not sufficient.
@Ariadne7710 ...Yesterday, I heard the perfect example of the requirements of Bel Canto ... Beverly Sill and Angela Gheorgiu singing 'Giusto ciel, in tal periglio', from Rossini's 'L'Assedio Di Corinto'... Gheorghiu has a beautiful tone to her voice, but there is no way she could have managed the coloratura elements sung by the great Sills. ... Beauty and stunning vocal virtuosity, coupled with bravura. Gheorghiu is wise and sticks with what she does marvellously.
@hayyu2008 Absolutely. Also, it is one thing to sing the odd aria from an opera especially in a recording studio, but to tackle a whole opera live on stage with the need to project the voice to the back of the top tiers of the opera house, and not run out of puff before the end of say 3 hours is a whole different story. On top of all the voice qualities, you need lung power and stamina, and with some of the newer productions there is all the running and jumping around all over the stage too!!
@Ariadne7710 ... It seems that many sopranos would like to think they can sing Bel Canto; perhaps nostalgia for a golden age, inspiration from great sopranos. Whetever tha case, many seem to make the mistake of taking on roles they just can't sing. I'm no expert at all, just passionate about Bel Canto. I believe Joan Sutherland commented on young 'commercial' sopranos not being nearly ready, neither echnically nor in terms of maturity, to be able to tackle these great, yet daunting roles.
@hayyu2008 Yes you are right. Lots of young singers male and female want to do it because audiences love it and are thrilled by the vocal acrobatics of Bel Canto. Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti composed several Operas for Isabella Colbran, Maria Malibran (who was very young) and Giuditta Pasta all of whom had reputedly amazing vocal abilities and did justice to them. Today, Juan Diego Florez, Natalie Dessay and Joyce di Donato are natural bel canto singers, the rest have to work much harder.
@Ariadne7710 I love Angela, but I tend to agree that her voice is unsuitable to BelCanto. I say that, yet I love her Vissi d'arte. What do you think Angela's niche is? Also what do you think of Sumi Jo, very different from Angela, but both have beautiful tone?
@79barkingspider She is a lyric soprano. She sings Boheme, Traviata Tosca etc wonderfully but is unsuitable for Bel canto. She can and does sing some arias in concert but would not be able to sing a whole opera such as Lucia. She does not have a large range either. Sumi Jo is a coloratura soprano. Her top register and agility are fantastic but again not a large range, in her case not a good low register. They should do the type of singing that they can do well, and leave the rest alone.
@OldAthenian The name Gheorghiu is a relic of a previous marriage to a plumbing engineer. At 39, at the height of her career, does she regret not changing it?"It's not so important. My family name, by which I'm still known in Adjud, where I was born, was Burlacu. But the name Gheorghiu belongs to one the most important artistic families in Romania, and I am on good terms with
my ex-husband's family. His father, Stefan, was a violinist, and his uncle

She's only OK. She lacks the pathos that this aria demands.
Callas is still my preferred as it should be since she used this aria, probably one of the most difficult ever written, to warm up prior to going on stage. Thanks!
FRANKHODGES39 8 months ago
Norma is one of my favorite operas, but Angela is not a "standard" in this role. Her tone is too dark and "heavy" for this aria. The amazing thing about her is that I have heard her sing everything from contralto to coloratura capably. That's amazing. Also, mezzos with good upper ranges are my favorite, and she sure comes close. I still don't think anyone can touch Callas in this role.
79barkingspider 8 months ago
@79barkingspider Can anybody, or will anybody ever touch Callas? I think not.
hammer555551 8 months ago
@79barkingspider You are quite right. Her voice is not right for this role. She is OK here and there but the voice timbre is not suitable. For the whole opera a much bigger, fuller, richer and more agile voice is required. It is a different matter to record a few arias from performing the whole opera on stage. In a recording studio it is a lot easier. You can do several takes and stop and start but live on stage is a different story. Also it is quite long and a lot of stamina is needed.
Ariadne7710 8 months ago
@79barkingspider If you are interested to hear the spectacular coloratura singing look on you tube for Callas singing "D'amore al dolce impero" from ""Armida" particularly the 1952 recording. You will see what I mean. Callas had a 3 octave range which is very rare, which meant that she could reach very low notes with equal ease as high notes up to E6.

THE voice of THE GODDESS: good bye Callas, hello Gheorghiu! But the damned constant camera action is enough to make one dizzy! Keep the camera shot on her from one or two angles, not one or two every milli-second!

wonderingidiot 9 months ago
Strange but I like this singing much better than Callas/ Callas is too sharp, non melodious, especially later Callas. Callas can't play with her voice like Georghiu can. This one seems in possession of full power of her voice and she never goes to the limit and Callas is on the limit all the time. I honestly cannot understand why people like Callas of the end of her career at all. Probably only as the memory of the beginning and middle of her career.
Nushika9 9 months ago
@Nushika9 I'm not saying Gheorghiu isn't talented. She 's fabulous. This is a very well sung Casta Diva (and in her CD album a nice Ah bello a me ritorna) but this is like so many beautifully performed concert & recital versions I've heard from Leontyne Price, Renee Fleming, Cecilia Bartoli, Anna Netrebko & Inessa Galante; gifted but who can't sing all of Norma. In recent years only Jane Eaglen has been an outstanding Norma. Again, just Casta Diva isn't all of Norma!
OperaMystery80 9 months ago
@OperaMystery80 I do not know the entire opera. I sang another lyrics on the melody of Casta Diva myself. You can check it out on my channel, the name is "Bezhezk". So I know this aria. I can't myself of course sing like Gheorghiu, Gallante, Netrebko, etc. I never worked seriously on my voice and never was the professional, but I know very well how to exercise and to develop voice, achieving perfection or almost. Dramatic difficulties of the part of Norma I am not much interested to discuss.

Callas died! Angela lives! Wake up, what the hell!
merdenele10 9 months ago
agreed. no one can match callas's norma. although i heard colors in gheorghius voice reminiscent of callas, im curious to hear angela do the entire opera. one aria out of the opera does not make norma norma.
ivantwill 9 months ago
@ivantwill Exactly what I said. But today's major sopranos are scared to death of singing Norma! They just sing Casta Diva in recital. They're such chickens. Very rarely you hear Norma somewhere in some European opera company. They don't have it in America (when was the last time they had Norma at the Met ?) or major world opera houses (not even at La Scala, where the crowds and critics are vicious). Fleming, Gheorgiu, Netrebko and others today can't sing Norma. It belongs to Callas.
OperaMystery80 9 months ago
I agree with you. Since Caballe and Sutherland, one considered the successor to Callas in the most general and the other, the continuation of their tradition, there has been no standard should be. Standard is madefor a coloratur soprano, which is not Gheorghiu ... Callas could be the teacher of Gheorghiu because she managed as any from the low notes to the treble, and look her low was almost contraltino or mezzosoprano and her treble was light, also she was master of coloratura.
Alleeexoscm 9 months ago
@Alleeexoscm Oh, GOD! Maria Callas is gone. Angela Gheorghiu is alive and well. Pray God for that! There two sopranos of different time. One comes from Julliard School of Music, in Manhattan, NY and the other one comes from Comunism Romanian after four years of Lyceum of Music and another 4 or 5 of Romanian Music Conservatorium just enough to be admitted as soprano at Covent Garden. There's no one better then her. So please let's be nice to her, enjoy her singing and please the God for HIs gift!
alexliliryan 9 months ago 4
@OperaMystery80 You are right most sopranos today don't sing Norma because THEY CAN'T. Norma is LONG, it is HARD, it needs tremendous technique, and stamina. I heard Callas singing Norma live at La Scala in the 50s. It was an unforgettable experience as were all the other operas I heard her sing live. I cannot think of any other opera performances I have attended since then (and I have attended very many) who have left such an impression on me. I have seen a couple of Normas since........
Ariadne7710 7 months ago
@OperaMystery80 ...but they weren't worth it. I don't bother now. It is a waste of time. Callas interpreted each character because she bothered to study and understand them. Most others, including Sutherland etc just sing the notes. It is not about a pretty voice and high notes. Can you name one modern soprano who could sing "In mia man" or "Deh non volerli vittime" in a credible way? Or take on Medea? Callas didn' t take short cuts to "save her voice" She would regard it as dishonest.
Ariadne7710 7 months ago
@Ariadne7710 Callas loved Caballe as Norma; Caballe came to see Callas in Paris to get advice on how to sing Norma. Caballe did a great job and she might still count as a "modern"singer; she sang opera actively through the 60's, 70's and 80's. I also like Shirley Verrett as Norma, also singing it in the 70's/80's. But in our current time no one sings Norma. Callas is the winner on that one;; she was the one and only true Norma
OperaMystery80 7 months ago
@OperaMystery80 Although I have not heard Caballe live singing Norma from the recordings I have heard she was fine. I would say she is the next best but a long way behind. What separates Callas from the rest is not just the vocal rendition but the interpretative aspect. In scenes of intense drama and distress she conveys those feelings in a very real way. Her duet with Adalgisa in this particular recording is equally moving. And the last aria "Deh non volerli vittime" is heartbreaking.
Ariadne7710 7 months ago
If Gheorgiu is so good at this, why doesn't she perform the entire Norma, instead of just the Casta Diva & Ah bello a me ritorna? Today's opera stars can't sing all of Norma. A few now and then do it justice, namely lesser known European, Spanish/Latin Americans, but not the major stars. Fleming & Gheorghiu can sing Casta Diva & Ah Bello a me Ritorna but that's it. The role is hard and too associated with Callas whose superiority everyone's afraid of. I like Elinor Ross after Callas
OperaMystery80 9 months ago
@OperaMystery80: Callas was stupid enough not to protect her voice: she sang too much, too high, and too loud, and as a result she was out of the business quite early. Gheorghiu made it clear in her interviews that protecting her voice for the long term is her key criterion in choosing her repertoire. When asked about Norma she said "not yet". From the mere fact that Gheorghiu sings Casta Diva very well, it doesn't follow that she must perform the entire Norma. It's a non sequitur.
SavHub 9 months ago in playlist Angela Gheorghiu 11

It has got to be hard for fantastic sopranos like Angela GHEORGHIU and contemporary artists. They need love too and Angela is absolutely a great Lyric Soprano and actress.

A question here - how easy is it for a soprano such as Angela to move into Bel Canto roles ... I mean at music college, is Coloratura taught as an option? How is it decided that a soprano is a certain type? Pardon the ignorance, but I do feel she has a wonderful voice, but would she be able to sing roles such as Lucia, Lucrezia Borgia, Roberto Devereux, Beatrice etc? ... I hope she can and does!
hayyu2008 1 year ago
@hayyu2008 To sing belcanto you need a voice with an excellent range, exceptional top notes, great agility, clarity, amazing breath control and great stamina. Also you need the ability to sing very long legato lines. A voice must have some of these qualities naturally (agility in particular) before attempting to "learn" the bel canto repertoire. No matter how much you want to do it if the vocal cords are not able to do it then best not to try. AngelaGeorgiu's voice is not suitable.
Ariadne7710 1 year ago
@Ariadne7710 ... Many thanks for your answer. I guess there are many who aspire to sing Bel Canto, but just do not have all the qualities needed. I suppose a beautiful-sounding voice is not sufficient.
hayyu2008 11 months ago
@Ariadne7710 ...Yesterday, I heard the perfect example of the requirements of Bel Canto ... Beverly Sill and Angela Gheorgiu singing 'Giusto ciel, in tal periglio', from Rossini's 'L'Assedio Di Corinto'... Gheorghiu has a beautiful tone to her voice, but there is no way she could have managed the coloratura elements sung by the great Sills. ... Beauty and stunning vocal virtuosity, coupled with bravura. Gheorghiu is wise and sticks with what she does marvellously.
hayyu2008 11 months ago
@hayyu2008 Absolutely. Also, it is one thing to sing the odd aria from an opera especially in a recording studio, but to tackle a whole opera live on stage with the need to project the voice to the back of the top tiers of the opera house, and not run out of puff before the end of say 3 hours is a whole different story. On top of all the voice qualities, you need lung power and stamina, and with some of the newer productions there is all the running and jumping around all over the stage too!!
Ariadne7710 11 months ago
@Ariadne7710 ... It seems that many sopranos would like to think they can sing Bel Canto; perhaps nostalgia for a golden age, inspiration from great sopranos. Whetever tha case, many seem to make the mistake of taking on roles they just can't sing. I'm no expert at all, just passionate about Bel Canto. I believe Joan Sutherland commented on young 'commercial' sopranos not being nearly ready, neither echnically nor in terms of maturity, to be able to tackle these great, yet daunting roles.
hayyu2008 11 months ago 2
@hayyu2008 Yes you are right. Lots of young singers male and female want to do it because audiences love it and are thrilled by the vocal acrobatics of Bel Canto. Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti composed several Operas for Isabella Colbran, Maria Malibran (who was very young) and Giuditta Pasta all of whom had reputedly amazing vocal abilities and did justice to them. Today, Juan Diego Florez, Natalie Dessay and Joyce di Donato are natural bel canto singers, the rest have to work much harder.
Ariadne7710 11 months ago
@Ariadne7710 I love Angela, but I tend to agree that her voice is unsuitable to BelCanto. I say that, yet I love her Vissi d'arte. What do you think Angela's niche is? Also what do you think of Sumi Jo, very different from Angela, but both have beautiful tone?
79barkingspider 10 months ago
@79barkingspider She is a lyric soprano. She sings Boheme, Traviata Tosca etc wonderfully but is unsuitable for Bel canto. She can and does sing some arias in concert but would not be able to sing a whole opera such as Lucia. She does not have a large range either. Sumi Jo is a coloratura soprano. Her top register and agility are fantastic but again not a large range, in her case not a good low register. They should do the type of singing that they can do well, and leave the rest alone.
Ariadne7710 10 months ago
@OldAthenian The name Gheorghiu is a relic of a previous marriage to a plumbing engineer. At 39, at the height of her career, does she regret not changing it?"It's not so important.
