  • This song rivals anything ever done by Harry Chapin as far as a storyteller's song goes. As other have said, just gave me goosebumps the first time I ever heard it and every time since then.

  • This whole album is great. This song still gives me goose bumps. When I would play this song for my girlfriends and my now wife they said it was too sad for them. To me its the real word as we live in it today. Meaning 2011

  • Great ballad from the man... love it...

  • me too

  • my first time hearin this song....love this song... wow

  • it,s beautiful

  • This song will live FOREVER...74,691 views, Shame!

  • neverdullboy: Agreed. First time I heard it, I couldn't believe what I heard. Still gives me goosebumps. "His soul is like some ugly, vacant lot". Man.

  • This song is beautiful. Then add the scenery and it makes it 0utstanding.

  • ...x finnnnnnnnnn te encontre'..

    maravilloso..

    lo maximoooooooooo

  • this song is sad...beyond sad, what could drive a man to this?....but the music....this man could write...such poetry, such tragedy

  • When the congress woman, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords from AZ, got shot that fatal day, I had to play this song to let out my anger and sasdness! This was a great, great song that the crummy critics dismissed, probably because of the length of the song--it deserved to be a major hit! BobbyK

  • Still to this day: Dan is my favorite singer, songwriter, musican and storyteller! I fell in love with Nether Lands 35 years ago when I was 13 and every song he has performed holds a special place in my heart! He was such a great storyteller that to this day, his songs can still bring tears to my eyes even though I've heard them hundreds of times! Dan you will be missed, but I will never stop listening to the great gifts you have given all of us with your music!!

  • Brilliant and powerful song from the greatest singer songwriter, one that left us way too soon. What an amazing album Windows & Walls was!!!Thanks for sharing this video!!

  • my first time to hear this one.. Dan was a great singer songwriter.. what a beautiful song here. Wow listen to the guitar.. whew!! I am from Texas, but love Arizona. thanks for sharing my friend....

  • I agree with Mr. Sammie about this song. It is a tragic opera with a great story. Another of Fogelberg's epic works is "Ghosts.' More philosophy than story, but an absolute classic.

  • One of my favorite songs ever, ever since I heard it back in 84… Thamks for posting

  • My favourite Fogelberg song. Eerie given the tragedy in Tucson. Great guitar work. A poignant song about lost souls.

  • my 6th grade teacher used to make us listen to this everyday in class, still don't know why but it was serious business.

  • I HATE PIMA COUNTY IN TUCSON AZ THEY KILLED MY DOG SUKI #297007 ON 1/5/2011

  • @pimakilledsuki Just curious, why did they kill your dog?

  • DAN FOGLEBERG---"TUSCON, ARIZONA"

  • By far...this is Dan's best. It is an opera...and movie...a great novel....all rolled into one, and told through his wonderful voice, and conviction in and dedication to, details.

  • Dan Fan for ever... My personal favorite. To play this on the guitar and sing it!!!

     this.is Incredible work..

    He tells you are story..

And give's you a symphony of music to take with you.

  • my God this man was such a talent....his songs cut you right down to the bone and expsose the empty places there......beyond words.

  • This along with Believe In Me are my all time favorite Dan Fogelberg songs! This song is so intense and sad, it makes me cry. Reminds me of my life in melancholy before I married.

  • Cette chanson mérite d'être classée parmi les meilleures chansons de tous les temps...one of the best songs of alltime ..........

  • good song,

  • @patrekios While your listening to Dan... check out my new book GETTYSBURG... OTHER TIMES See my profile or search Amazon, ebay, Barns&Noble... You'll find a wisp of Tony in it...

  • Always my top number 1 song from Dan. So mesmerising, yet tragic. I love the 90 second fade out... Tops!

  • Incredible story and unforgettable music by a great music man. We miss your talent but a great deal is happily with us.

  • I can't believe it! The song!I've been a fan of Dan for 35 years and I've never heard that song-AND I'm from Tucson! Once in 1979 I went for 4 days vacation in Telluride,Colorado and he stayed next door to us. I didn't get to meet him, my Dad's friend did and he was playing 'Netherlands' in his home to impress him, but a year later I did.He was at a Who concert in Phoenix and I went up to him.He was drunk and surly and didn't want to talk but at least I met him,Too bad I never saw him play live.

  • I wish he was with us

  • LONG LIVE DAN'S MUSIC

  • My dad used to play this song while I "helped" sing when I was 5. I love this song still.

  • Thank-you for posting this beatiful song. This is a masterpiece, it has stood the test of time.

  • Cool !

Thank you very much for posting

  • I heard this song for the first time 25 years ago, as a young private stationed at Ft Riley Kansas, and LOVED the song! The song is still one of my fav's to this day!!!

  • @CATHOWARD1 I too heard it as a young MP at Ft Carson ! got to see him play at Mcnichols arena in Denver that year. was lucky to see him on his last tour up in the northwest !

  • Mr. President - As a lawyer-you must know - your "non-action" - is aiding illegal activity. Illegal aliens must become legal: paperwork is just the beginning - . Blessings to all U.S. law enforcement officers, both U.S. citizens and Meixcan citizens: save lives on both sides of the borders - start procedures now. This ballad depicts Arizona today urging us to solve this problem.

  • I'm Mexican and I love this song, thank you Mr Dan Fogelberg I've known your Country by your songs

  • A great tune !!! I went to Junior High and High School in Tucson, AZ. I saw Dan in concert 3 times and he was outstanding !!

  • My little Podunk town -- Tucson, AZ.

  • It's crazy, I've always loved Dan's work, but this is the first time I've ever heard this song. It's awesome...kind of ironic how so many of us only know the night as our friends.

  • i miss him. he wrote the soundtrack of my life.

Thanks for upload this beautyful song, surely mi dad is listening now from heaven...

    love U dad!

  • Pity those among us who are lost in the wasteland of their lives.

  • I don't know how many times I've listened to this song..it means so much to me.. I've lost count!! I never tire of it.. ! beautiful thanks for posting.. :-)

  • Very nice, thanks!

  • Aún a la distancia y en el dolor, echo de menos a mi artista favorito, que gran tema, que gran interpretación, ya ves dan, ya no existen artistas de tu altura.

  • What a incredible peice of writing. One of his absolute best, the 1st time I heard it, I just went ~~~wow. I would post the lyrics, but they're too long.

  • tucson arizona, one daughter with two fathers: USA and Mexico

  • One of my favorite story songs from Dan . I had the pleasure of seeing Dan perform Live many many times in concert . Both with full band AND solo acoustic tours . Dan was a musical genius . One that i miss very badly . And whose musical style we all need more than ever right now .

  • Dan was a great story teller, song writer, musican and composer of music. His father who is in heaven, is and always will be very proud of him. God Blessed Dan with these gifts and he will be missed. As for me, his Music will always be in my heart and soul.

  • One of Dan's best - used to play it along with "Hazard" (a similar track). The album "Windows and Walls" was well written and, maybe, underrated.

  • One of Dan's great songs and an absolute favourite of mine.

    From "Windows and walls" 198?????

  • @RobertJohnM 1984. :) A favorite of mine too!

  • Sitting here, a 37 year old guy, who imagines he's pretty tough..... Except for the tears running down my face. This song kills me, yet I love it, and have for 20 years, since I first heard it. This man had talent. Nuff said.

  • @neverdullboy My ex used to play this album over and over and over when we first got together. I'm 44 and crying too. :)

  • I wish that i could have been born earlier so that i could have gone to one of his concerts and understood his amazing talent and his love for music. i love Dan soooo much he's amazing!!!!!

  • Actually it's called Springhill Mine Disaster...

  • The only songs I can think of that come close to this kind of storytelling are Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and The Cumberland Mine Disaster.

  • Thinking and missing Dan on this day. Looked at my framed copy of his birthday announcement this a.m. and could only smile and give thanks for the legacy of music he left us.

  • @michaelp3138 :

    I couldn't agree more with you .

    Greetings from Munich, Germany.

  • Sad...but I'm afraid this old song is so much up to date...

  • it's a timeless subject, so i suppose it will always be a relevant song - you're right - it is sad and tragic

  • Wise lyric

  • What a truly talented man. Another one who dies way too soon. R.I.P. Dear Dan.............X0X0X0X

    Gone, but never forgotten

  • excelente cancion saludos

  • I don' t know a living musician who did anything that could compete with this song ....so perfectly arranged, strong, compelling, heartbreaking...you name it.....

  • What a song ...with these great lyrics ...with each and every line they give you the impression of watching a vid./movie....

Dan Fogelberg....we miss you so much...

    R.I.P.

  • Love Daniels ballads and miss a talented man. Lost to many close family and friends to cancer. Then I heard the news that Dan lost the fight as well. Just memories left.

  • I would agree that Dan Fogelberg is one of the best. I graduated HS from the School that Dan's father was the band director. When Dan came to Peoria IL (his home town) to do a concert, it was the best I have ever seen! It was sad to hear he had passed.

  • One of the best singer songwriters of all time. I saw him live in Atlanta - at Chastain and the old Omni - GREAT! Just thankful for all the wonderful music that he left behind.

  • Superb with the Sonoran Desert as a visual to this tune....an unforgetsble experience seeing DF perform in PHX......God bless you brother

  • This song always reminds me of John Navarro, grown up in the southside of Chicago. Yes, John went to Vietrnam.

  • What's wrong with the wetback Tony?

  • great song one of my all time favs its sad we dont have talent like this anymore

  • Great song. Supposedly one of, if not his favorite tune. We sure miss you, Dan.

  • Might not be very popular commment, however, to those with the blessing of childeren:

"The neighbors speculated, what could have made a good boy go so bad? Well it might have been the desert heat, it might have been the home he never had."

  • Good Point!

  • Un gran tema

  • awsome song

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful music.

  • No one can equal him

  • incredible song ,one of my favorites,a movie scirpt, quite a story..we miss you DAN

  • I've heard that this story had happened in a real life to guy who was brother of drummer from Dan's band

  • DOLRED,thank you for response to my question

  • Does anyone know if the people Dan talks about in this song were real, and was this song based upon something Dan read in a newspaper or did he create this song and the events using his imagination? Thanks if you know.

  • Dan talks about this song (his favorite) in

an interview with Fred Migliore of FM Odyssey Radio . You can buy the CD off his Living Legacy web site. It's great , well worth having for any Dan Fan. The song is pure fiction by the way , just Dan's statement about violence in our country.

  • Thank you for uploading this song for us to listen to I wore out my casette taap, I played this song so much. Those of you who play guitar should get the chords and music to it, it is alot of fun to play.

  • Welcome !

  • Dan in my opinion was the quintessential musician, very attuned to human frailty and emotion, never to be equaled.

     R.I.P. Dan

  • Genious. The spirit and soul of this man can never end as his music lives on and "ever on". Still crying Dan, still remembering the first time I heard "To The Morning" back when I was 14 years old...

  • THIS SONG LIVIN IN MY MIND.

  • Ever On, Dan ['] You will forever live in our memories

  • This song always brings goosebumps down my spine, especially when the violins set in.........

Thank you ever so much, Dan, for making a HUGE difference in this carousel we call the music industry. We'll always miss you, but you can rest assured: none of us will ever forget you..........

  • check out tell me to my face i heard the first time in a long time today on xm radio

  • Dan will be forever missed. "EVER ON"

  • His physical being is gone, but his spirit lives on.

  • Danny considered this his best song.

    He described it as "Cinematic".

  • its not showing the video or playing the music...i dont know whats up with it but i LOVE this song...my grandpa played it for me a few years ago and then i dont know what happened but i just remembered this song because he was playing my guitar and i couldnt remember the name of the song so i hummed a few lines told him to play it and he was like is it tucsan arizona? and i said yeah thats the song...i almost cry when i hear this song because its so sad

  • Thanks for posting this video! The first time I heard this awesome song was, when I was a kid.Dan`s best song. An outstanding writer, singer and story-teller. Makes me shiver like a scary movie.. Your vid. is so good, because you perfectly choose the right pictures and colors enhancing the content of the story (unlike so many others who ruin their vid.s by adding a bunch of inappropriate pictures and stuff).GREAT JOB ! BE PROUD! And--greetings from Germany!

  • apparently, it is the story of His drummer's sister

  • No two ways about it; it's Dan's best song. Thanks for posting. It evokes incredible imagery.

  • Yeah! Agree on that.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Jokarilon! See my last comment...

  • The Best Dan Fogelbergs song !!!

  • q wen tema oiga!!!

    años q andaba buscandolo

una lastima q ya no este

    entre nosotros el señor Dan..

    pero su musica aun prevalece

    en nuestros corazones XD

    saludos desde chile!!!

  • this song reflects how the family can protect its members , and how a bad start could have a ad end

  • Hello.

In Portugal there are a few fans of this music too. Was presented to me about 20 years ago by a friend and it still plays in my car after this years, in a tape.

    Love it....

  • my favorite fogelberg song - i also read in an album that this was his favorite song - that critics called it too long - but dan still felt it was his best work

  • Hermosa esta cancion, auque claro que cualquiera que la escucha pensaria que es algo realcionado con el amor de personas, pero más bien habla sobre tucson arizona.

  • I do wich that the women of this state will heed the warnings of this song. Any girl from Arizona NEEDS TO REALIZE that there are guys here that happen to be educated. DO NOT WRITE US OFF ANY LONGER. YOU DO NOT WANT TO WIND UP WITH A TONY! Instead, you need to end up with a Midwest import named Rob, who LOVES THIS STATE, BUT WISHES TO FIND A DECENT GIRL WHO KNOWS A GOOD-LOOKING AND SUCCESSFUL GUY WHEN SHE SEES ONE!

  • I am writing from France.

Dan Fogelberg is almost unknown here.

You can only afford one or two, perhaps three of his latest albums.

    Nobody knows he died recently.

The last time I heard this superb song, it was in 1977 or 1978, quite a long time ago, but I've always had the tune in mind.

    I am moved.

    Adieu Dan.

  • Dan Fogelberg has written many terrific tunes, but this one certainly tops it,and the images in this video, especially the lightening are terrific peice that goes with the song! The song is heart wrenching yet it represents a reality that almost no one is willing to own up to in his or her family with such dysfunction. While I dont take drugs, I did grow up in a house that was never really a home, and I can relate to the feeling of completely estrangement and isolation.

  • i read that this was his personal favorite. Great song. Haunting..

    I hear a true story...(well somewhere)

    Vee

  • Too young to die...

  • So true!.......He had a gift of being able to touch peoples' hearts and reach across time and space.

  • This was Dan's last good Album. "Nether Lands" was Perfect. Nothing was going to come close to Home Free, Souvenirs, Captured Angel and Nether Land. The Windows and Walls was very good. Anyway, Dan was the best!!!!!!!!!

  • I am going to disagree with Windows and Walls being the last of the good work he did. I feel many had a problem with also the voice change, when he had his tonsils removed, which lowered the pitch. Window and Walls was the first album out since he had them removed. I find it interesting to hear many changes in his voice thorough out the album.High Country Snows,Exiles&The Wild Places were well produced albums.I agree his early works are just awesome. How can you not mention The Innocent Age?

  • Yes! And while the earliest works are tied up with my youthful reminiscences (giving them a certain emotional resonance that only magnifies with time), the musical stuff he pulls off on his more mature releases (vocals included) kicks ass.

  • I agree Dan was the best. I disagree that the voice change was negative. Sure, I missed the falsetto, but the tonsil situation gave all kinds of new colors to his voice. We got to hear him as angelic voiced boy and as a real manly man too. I consider that a gift, and his post Innocent Age releases too. Sopranos and tenors shouldn't have all the acclaim, y'know.

  • thanks for the positive on Dan's music. the hostilehotelwalls was being a jerk. It was purely a disagree to agree. I love the fact that he did it his way, not the way the music industry wanted. I love all the voices of Dan.Men in particular, their voices do change with maturity. I love the fact that his music also matured with him and it never sounded the same or sounded as a copy of someone else, as we have in today's music. That to me, is what made him unique and special. Gotta love him!

  • I discovered this song and this singer by a work colleague who bought the LP in USA in 1984.

This song is awesome and it's the best Dan Fogelberg one. I like the lyrics too. What a terrific story!

Note that if you paste "&fmt=18" at the end of the URL it will play in stereo.

  • What a fucking awesome, incredible, fantastic song!!!!! such a good story, spanic guitar scales, just great...somehow it reminded my of Hazzard by Richard Marx or the wild rose from nick cave...awesome, just that, thank for the vid. it was really well done and the lightnings at the end were just te right image for the moment, good job!!!

  • Thanks & more power to you!

  • This song reminds me of my first love whom had moved to Tucson. I was so smitten with her and didn't know how to tell her. I never did find out. Dan always reaches me where I fountain love from in my heart.

Though I have nothing in common with the main character in this story, I will always feel close to this song.

  • Can't believe the critics ripped this album apart. Ok, so it's not The Innocent Age. He was still riding the tails of TIA in his song writing.I found it interesting how his voice sounds so different on many songs. Having his voice lowered by having his tonsils out at the age of 30. This song had to be recorded before his surgery? It still sounds as it did on TIA. I love listening to the changes of his voice through out the album. Love the music and the voice behind it.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • You are so welcome! The other song on this album, Sweet Magnolia and The Traveling Salesman is actually a song about his life with his first wife Maggie. Knowing that,it really gave life to the song. Peace

  • You seem to know Dan well... we'll try to work on those songs too. Thanks again!

  • Critics are typically frustrated artists without the talent to move on, and bitter that someone else could. They tend to write to impress one another rather than provide helpful insight to others. Those of us that didn't get caught up in peer pressure and actually appreciate music for its pure, intrinsic qualities are in awe of how much talent this one man had. Perhaps in death others may one day know, but at one of his shows, you could tell you were in the presence of something amazing.

  • Everyone disagrees with me. He had tonsillitis but after the surgery, he couldn't sing falsetto. It changed the way he wrote and sang. He is still my favorite artist but everything after 1980 was a B album or less. Let's be honest. On a lot of those Albums he had one to two good songs. That is a far cry from all of the songs being great. Windows/Walls was the exception. He was underrated as a musician and the best song writer ever. Remember "Fan" is short for "Fanatic". Be honest about Dan.

  • So delighted to see this here - my favourite Dan song

  • ...what a song... what a story. ...que cancion... que historia...

  • Gone now but definately not to be forgotten. This song/story knocked me out twenty-some years ago and still gives me chills. What a slice of true life he brings to life.

  • Dan was so gifted. Painter, musician, songwriter, and last but not least, storyteller. Thanks Jokarilon!

  • Welcome, buddy!

  • This is one HELL of a song. Reflects the true emotions that can exist in the heat, and captures the Hispanic influence of the Grand Canyon State very well. Not to mention the utter beauty of this state. GO ARIZONA!

  • What album is this from?? I liked the clips of Tuscon to this song. I currently have a friend who is in the hospital not doing very well, and the clips remind me of the trip to Tuscon, Ariz we took in 1991. A good friend!

Thanks Dan where ever you are.

  • ...from the album Windows & Walls, 1984.

  • Ojmccaf1963- great song huh! Excellent album too--a little different than his other works. Dan is amazing! I hope your friend is doing better((prayers))

  • Thanks! It just brings back alot of memories of traveling in Tuscon, Ariz.
