Yeah, a lot of the characters sounded a little different in the first one or two seasons even though the voice actors weren't changed. I find Bart's voice used to be a bit higher-pitched than it is is now, and Homer's used to be deeper and more monotone, which didn't fit his always-changing "Bart!!! Why you little--Mmm, chocolate." emotions. :)

Well, Smithers was only "black" that one time (the 3rd episode to ever air), and it was mainly because of bad communication. The color designer for that particular episode hadn't been told that Smithers was supposed to be any particular race, so just to break up the monotony he decided at random to make that character darker than the others.

As Groening put it, "We didn't know what the hell we were doing back then," and mixups like that tended to occur.
