@JuliusSP1 The trouble with Jazzmasters and Jaguars is that they are difficult to setup if you are unfamiliar with the bridge and trem system. Once you've got the hang of how to set it up properly it is just as easy to intonate as any other guitar.
The reason why there isnt a tone knob is because Lee streamlined the electronics to disclude one purposely for Sonic Youths sound. Since it's his signature model, Fender discluded the tone knob as well. All the tone settings Lee needs are on his amplifiers and pedal board anyhow.
damn you got a lot of energy playing, you should practice a LITTLE more though as it was kind of sloppy. GReat demo though and i really like your energy when playing
to be honest... no offense... I could be majorly wrong, but I have a mastery, and your bridge looks like it could use a heinous re-intonating. I only say this because as it is a 7.25 radius, on a 25.5 inch neck, it should look identical on every jazzy.
Would have liked to hear some more precise playing rather than that grunge strum stuff. Nice Guitar tho Man. I agree, lack of tone knob is a boner by Fender . Thanks for the vid :)
are you jewish by any chance (no im not a youtube anti-semite, its cause im jewish and my jewdar went on). You remind me of ezra koenig from vampire weekend. good demo too.
There is no tone knob, because Lee Ranaldo, removes the tone knob and upper bout circuity of his Jazzmasters. Look at any Sonic Youth guitar, no tone knobs. That's what makes that a signature model. I have the Thurston Mooore Jazzmaster and love it.
are you left handed?? thas awesome i like this one but if i were you i woulda bought the thurstion moore one and the lee renaldo neck pup in place of the thurston one lol or just buy a reg jazzmaster and do that
I like your strumming style it reminds of myself. Glad to finally see a decent video without all the bullshit solos and crap riffs.
I'm not a divebomber myself but I like to give the guitar hell sometimes. Your strumming style shows you tube hasn't been infesed by only pussies showing off their gay skills.
Pretty well. I don't do a lot of dive bombs, but I do shake it quite violently. The b string does go flat more often than the others, but I generally don't have to tune the other strings after heavy tremolo use.
The Thurston model has jumbo frets, which I can't stand. I was also really drawn to the pickups in the Ranaldo. I do like the Mascis model quite a bit, but I prefer the look of the Ranaldo.
fun fact, when they were designing this guitar and the Thurston model the first thing they fender asked them to do was rip the tone knob out because they hated tinkering with them and knocking them whilst performing.
someone mentioned that jazz masters have horrible intonation?! Do you disagree?

Stupid question. What song is he playing at 4:15?
Just2Rusty 1 year ago
It can't have a tone knob because Sonic Youth have no use for it. If you want tone, buy a regular jazzmaster.

How well does it stay in tune when bombing the trem? Really curious about this.

why should Fender put a tone knob on it? It's built for Ranaldo and he didnt want one.
if you want one put one on there yourself?!

I shot it on my mac. It mirrors everything.

Hm. Strange.
Also, what made you choose the Lee Ranaldo Jazzmaster, and not the Thurston Moore one (or the J. Mascis one for that matter)?
Cheers

samglassberg 2 years ago
I didn't know about the jumbo frets.
Right now, all of them are pretty much over my budget, but I think I'd prefer the Lee Ranaldo one too, because, well, it's a Jazzblaster. :)

I wouldn't go around criticizing the Mexican Jazzmaster. It sounds just like an original, but with more sustain. Check out my demo.
