you are so right SewnShutEyes, but one cannot do justice to a beautiful anthem such as the South African one without music because i used to live in SA and used to sing that anthem a lot (pre game while watching tv haha) and it wouldnt sound right without it. However the NZ Anthem sounds great without music and with the singer and the rugby fans singing along. Just my observation.

I think national anthems sound best without music and just the words. The NZ anthem and the South African one are fantastic and a brilliant to set-up a test match.

According to Hayley Westenra it is better without the music because the singer can adapt to the tempo of the crowd. I think this is exactly what Deborah is doing. The music will tend to go a bit faster than a loud crowd can and the singer is obliged to stay with the music, I suppose. Without the music the singer can slow down and lead the crowd properly.
