I think von Suppe has been to a wide extent underrated. I find this piece so much nicer than the "Light cavalery Overture". Don't get me wrong they are both nice but between the two this is my favorite.

I had my first record player as a Christmas present in 1958 and one of the first discs I bought included this wonderful overture. I played the disc until it wore out and my parents were driven mad as I conducted it as though I was in front of a symphony orchestra.

This is one of the "great" overtures of it's era. The opera didn't really survive, but the overture did (a great testiment to how well it is written). vonSuppe is not considered one of the best romantic era composers today, in American circles, but the Europeans still love and revere him. Unfortunately, this overture has been really overused in all sorts of "melodramatic" formats such as cartoons, etc. But, that doesn't detract from its place among opera overtures that stood the test of time
