I don't listen to tool/mastodon because of their song structure... it just sounds good. I think music is all about conveying a feeling, no matter which time sig or structure is used. one could argue that johnny cash "sucks" because of his "simple" song structure, but the truth is that the guy's a genius and his songs are full of feeling... no one is "cool" or "smart" for listening to "alternative" music... there are dumbass fans in every genre of music (aka the people who marked me down) lol

It's a simple case of apples and oranges. Tool are great at what they do, and Mastodon is great at what they do.

No I don't. I've checked out every record start to finish though. I was just replying to the guy saying that tool blows comparatively. I don't find mastodon thought provoking or emotionally moving is all. I "listened" to Mastodon. I didn't "feel" Mastodon. Besides that familiar metal "energy" of course. I think they have a unique approach to metal and are a great band. It's just not to my taste.

Depends what you are listening to music for. Technical prowess and loudness or to take a mystical/emotional journey. Awake vs dreaming. I choose tool any day of the week. Aenima especially. Mastodon are great players but they lack the ability to really write an undulating story with their songs. It's cool that tool recognise Mastodon and take them on tour with them though. They did the same for Meshuggah.

Well Remission is Mastodon's grittiest album by far. It's very noisy and less progressive than Leviathan and Blood Mountain. It's still a great fucking album, but just be warned that it's very very noisy and dirty sounding.
