It is so crazy to see Dave talking to someone that he admires so much. The admiration is so visible. Usually he is the cool guy, aloof, and just cracking the jokes. But here, it's almost like he's just a dorky music fan meeting one of his idols and asking all these crazy obscure questions. These two were so great together.
Letterman had some good interviews.....Letterman had a few really good interviews....Zevon is the best.....(yes even better than Madonna, Drew Barrymore, and Richard Simmons combined)
It's amazing how Late Night With David Letterman bears little to no resemblance to the gritty, semi-experimental, 12:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m. four nights a week show of the early 80's. What's it missing? Realness, like this interview.
I remember this interview, as I was fans of both Warren Zevon and David Letterman and recall Zevon's comment about how much vodka he was drinking. Either Letterman was a big Zevon fan or someone on the show's staff knew or looked up a lot about Zevon's career.
During my first year of college I met a guy we became friends and one day I picked him up to go to class he asked if he could listen to a tape he brought when he put in the deck excitable boy started playing and that was it I went to the mall and started a Zevon collection
The man is one of the greatest American artists in ANY genre and would now be revered as such if he hadn't had the misfortune to die in the same week as another of the USs' best-Johnny Cash. Warren's work is destined to be recognised only by those who NEED to recognise it. True feckin genius-an immense talent
It was the late spring of 79 when I arrived at NAF Sigonella Sicily. I was 21 and felt I had a decent knowldge of rock n rol. Anyway, my barracks-mate gave me his cassette as he decided he was gonna listen only to Christian music. I didnt know who WZ was and kinda blew it off until one day i lstened to it and I was HOOKED!! FU cancer, i hope cancer dies of a cure someday.
Warren Zevon = greatest. Thanks for uploading. Have you read his biography? It looked really good in the bookstore but I didn't have the cash to pick it up. It's got a bunch of Zevon's journal entries and shit like that; it even has Warren Zevon's "quasi-bad chili recipe."
Werewolves is 1 of my alltime fav songs. I knew Zevon had a serious alcohol problem but i never realized Billy Carter did until Zevon mentioned it in this clip.
im surprised that didnt go aswell as you woulda thought, but dave remained gracious and kept moving it forward...you could tell he had a real caring for zevon...he always was a great admirer of this guy...r.i.p.
This is from September 27, 1982 (Late Night episode #120). Warren had been originally scheduled to appear on Late Night's debut (February 1, 1982) but was bumped. So he finally appeared on the show almost 8 months later.
It was actually a guy named Michael Kinsley who was running for county commissioner; although HST was running for sheriff at the same time and later became friends with WZ.
The one telling moment for me is at 7:20 or so right after Dave asks him the amount he used to drink & Warren answers "a couple of quarts of vodka a day." Right after saying it he slips and grins for a quick second. That little grin was a hint that he was going to fall off the wagon because it indicated a sense of pride & playfulness about drinking. Lucky for all of us he did finally quit for good or we would have lost him alot sooner than we did.
"Celebrating with nothing to celebrate about..." Very understated way of putting, and I know exactly what he meant. Maybe not EXACTLY, but close enough still...
this man had a weird and wonderful sense of humor. i know Letterman appreciated and helped to promote warren's music, but it occurs to me that he probably related it to it so powerfully due to the humor of his lyrics...this was a case in point
Interesting how Letterman didn't pick up on Warren's "friend" in Aspen... Hunter S. Thompson. Who ran for sheriff of Pitkin County back in the early 70's. Thompson shaved his head and accused his republican opponent of being a longhaired hippie.
google "battle of aspen" if you want a funny read about it.
Great interview. Warren was so cool. Thank you so much for posting this. WZ and Dave were great together. I wish there were a dvd of all the WZ appearances on Letterman. I do get all the clips off of youtube that I can. These are great. Keep posting and I will keep watching.

@rollo131 - True. He never grew as a host. As much as I liked the show in the 80's, he only
has flashes of that talent now. He also isn't likeable like Johnny Carson was, he's an odd guy,
the one thing I can say is he's superior to Leno. More importantly he loved Warren Zevon as
much as we did.
