It's insane. I'd love to become a doctor but I can't get a loan for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I'd love to go to Nursing or RT schools, but even if you meet all of their recommended requirements, there is literally a 3 year waiting list to get in and even then there's no telling if you will or not. It's insane. The system right now is so horribly stacked against equitable healthcare and equitable healthcare practices. That's my professional opinion as someone working in it.
Socialized medicine is the only way to go. Any other way is condemning poor people to die, no matter how neatly it's worded.
Surprise! Allow more people to get healthcare, you get more people coming to hospitals. *gasp* amazing how many sick people there are. Better to have medicine on a "worst needed" basis than "can pay" basis. Need more doctors and medical professionals? Relax visas for immigrant medical workers, make medical schooling more affordable? Relax some standards?
The only way that would improve Canada's system would be if that the person could totally deduct the income taxes they are paying for the socialized system and go with the private insurer. If someone had to pay premiums for the private insurer and get taxed for the public system, I doubt many would go for that. It is true that competition and choice would help improve the government system. I don't know if that would help with doctor shortages and wait times at least in the short run though.
What I was proposing was that someone could go to a private insurer, but have their premiums paid by the government, which would get the funds from taxation.

Like I said, Make medical schools less expensive and there will be more doctors. Make nursing school more accessable and there will be more nurses.
I don't think someone's ability to get health treatment, even for minor health issues, should be determined on whether they have a job or not.

i knew there were problems, but I didn't know it was as bad as described. I would take your system over ours though...
