LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!! Every time I'm up in the mountains with my family...I'm singing this song!!!! Michael, you rock!!!(country-style.)
Love this song. What a singer, songwriter and string instrumentalist Michael Martin Murphey is. And what a keyboardist he is blessed with. Wish someone would post another of my favorite Murphey hits here though. The music video from a song titled Never Givin' Up On Love would be more than welcomed by me.
@keefer2111 no man , i dont think so, he was fortunate to live his dreams and do what he wanted to do ,and have a very sucessful song writeing career, and when all thet talent ,good fortune and karma all come together it is a natural high.
First time I heard this was on a cruising weekend on the motorbike (1970-something). I would hum it to myself while we drove all thru the mountains. Pure bliss!!
Saw Michael sing this song and others at a private concert at Philmont Scout Ranch in NM, think it was 1984, then later at a reunion in 01'? I think. He hasn't changed a bit. Great music, great enthusiasm, a wonderful custodian of the Southwestern culture. Good Video!
@br715 You got MMM and all we got was a hailstorm when I was there in '71. Rats. But I saw MMM in an outdoor pops concert in Phoenix right about the time you saw him at Philmont! Come check out my 700 playlists of the best music of the 20th century. Justr added this to my banjo favorites list! And DrDave's piano work on this is nearly important as MMM's singing & banjo! Thanks Doc!
Retro song of the day.....This was one of my favorite songs in middle school. There were 2 good videos on youtube that had the studio version, but the sound wasn't as loud. This live version has better quality sound.

Interesting... I never realized that he played banjo on this tune. It's extremely hard to play a banjo and sing at the same time!!!! Also, he is playing an archtop banjo, which was made popular by Ralph Stanley.
@bbear1994 Come on, dude! He's a cowboy, alright? Like Rango says in the upcoming movie, "Ain't no shame in that". Lol!! Check MMM's bio....He's a devoted father and family man.
What a great tune!! Had never heard it before, but been a big fan of "Wildfire" since its' release while in my teens. Michael and his band were an unbelievably underrated talent!! That's coming from a former Philly rock-and-roller now living in South Carolina, lol! His music celebrates the spirit and beauty of the wide open country and is pure Americana. I think of great bands like Poco in this vein also. Awesome!!
@RedPiper180 Carmen's son, huh? That's awesome, and so cool! My favorite steel playing, since I come from a classic rock upbringing, is the great work David Gilmour of Pink Floyd does on " High Hopes." It may be contrary to the accompaniment -type style your Dad employs, but I'd be curious to know what your Dad thinks of David's use of the fine instrument.
@scubarulz Haha my dad is not a big fan of anything but good old county and blue grass, but he respects what other players can do and i am positive he would enjoy some of David's work. Thanks for you comment
I did my stunt eaching in Beaumont, TX under Winnie Hogue in '76. Her daughter is the Carolina of this song & the pines are the south east TX piney woods. One of my mini claims to fame. MMM is awesome!
Date Davey Brock took me to the Rubaiyat in Dallas and we saw MMM I think he played the piano. Changed ny life, I went from being Rolling Stones wanna be groupie to being Carolina in the Pines... Thank you Davey and MMM for changing my life!
@maideux I'm from Philadelphia, and I have to say that Michael Martin Murphey is no doubt the BEST thing ever to come outta Dallas!!! Lol! Seriously, we all fell in love with "Wildfire" long ago, and this song is great, too. He and his band are definitely near top of my list of underrated talents. Freakin' incredible!!
Didn't Michael sing a song about Dancing with a Memory ? Only heard the song once and really can't remember if that is the name... Thanks Charlotte :O)
When I was 6 I remember the local country stations played the hell out of this song in the winter of 1985-1986, the piano solo stuck in my head for weeks
someone pulled the David Letterman version. That was so great with Paul Shaeffer on piano. I wish they'd put it back, it was so good,. this is nice also. Saw him at Bass Hall. Wonderful.

Yes! a joyous song and performance of a timeless classic! Thanks So Much! Every so often a perfect song comes along, this is one and it 's part of one of my all time favorite albums. I too saw this band live and they were stunning!
Probably my favorite MMM song. Clearly one of his as well. And what I wouldn't give to play that piano part correctly. Fantastic musicianship all around. I've recorded a version of this and posted it as a video response if you interested.

Just saw Michael about a month ago here in Idaho at an outside venue. The wind was blowing and it was colder than....well, it was VERY cold. They had no coats, but still was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Michael STILL plays and sings with joy, clapping and dancing to the music. And even in the cold, he stayed long after the concert, talking to people and autographing CD's. Super Entertainer!
I first heard this in an Army Pizza Parlor in Germany. I remember talking to a waitress about how much we liked it - I wish I could remember her name.
Had the pleasure of seeing MMM do a concert this past Friday evening here in Idaho. It was cold as ****, the guys didn't have coats and it was an outside venue. Still, they put on one HECK of a concert and afterwards, MMM came down, signed autographs and visited with anyone who wanted to talk to him. He's the ultimate showman, still dances and claps to the music, as well as a very personable man. Thanks for all the years of excellent music, and looking forward to many more.
Hey - gotta put a plug in for those of us in the younger generation. I started listening to MMM about 10 years ago for his traditional cowboy/range songs. I've just been introduced to his 70's folk music. LOVE IT! Just sayin'....from the younger generation! And my peers CAN keep GAGA et al. :)
This reminds me of the fall of 1975 listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40...I SO MISS THOSE DAYS OF 1975....John Denver, Neil Sedaka, The Carpenters, etc and then this gem by Michael Martin Murphey....Today's youth can keep their hip-hop and Lady Ga-Ga!!!!!
@sittnick1 Maybe they played it at a faster pace due to time constraints, as it seems to have taken place on a TV show. Reading of what a great, decent dude MMM is, he probably accomodated show producers wishes.
discovered this fella a few years ago from a friend of mine from Texas. Have started buying LPs again, and have scored some MMM albums. What a songwriter and player! Great piano player too! - chicubby1
Yes, I met Michael in 1995 ... we have a mutual friend. Michael is one of the nicest guys I ever met. Talked to me like we were long -time buddies. From reading other posts here, that sounds like a consistent character trait.
Met him in an airport about 4 years ago. I didn't want to bother him, so i just walked by and quickly told him I like his music and guitar playing. He treated me like a long lost brother, invited me to sit down and talk a while. Pure class.
yeah, great guy. got to meet him at a small concert he gave in Brenham, TX at my college. Haha...he said he liked my name because it was the same as his wife's (Karen). lol I'lve loved his music since I was really little, and this song is definitely my favorite.
@john26660 That's so freakin' cool! Today's athletes and other performers should take a page outta Michael's book. Does my heart good to see there are still fine gentlemen out there, like we were raised.
I don't mean to rant, but there aint many artists that touch you the way his music does. That is to say, by listening you get to know his heart. How many?
What can you say about a talent like that! I saw him here in spokane and everything he said, did or played was nothing but a CLASS act. He has an extremely generous heart and has donated the proceeds from a recording to charity. He's the real deal, and its a damn sorry thing that commercial broadcasting has thrown him away. RIDE ON COSMIC COWBOY, I'm with ya
He lives near me now. I was sitting in a high school auditorium listening to cowboy poetry. A young lady and her pre-teen daughter were reciting poetry. Suddenly, this exquisite guitar playing sounded from backstage, and onto the stage walked MMM himself. Blew me away. This was a "warm up act" for a cowboy singing group whose name I don't even remember. This in a town with a population of 3,000. Unforgettable.
MMM is so so under-rated as an artist and performer. His stuff form the late 70's and 80s was great but you NEVER hear anything on the damn radio other than Wildfire. This, Geronimos Caddy, What's Forever for, the whole River of Time album -God a great collection, Crystal, I could go on...can someone please post some of these songs?
The piano play does dwarf that piano, reminds me of my son who is 6' 4" trying to fit in my mom Old's Cutless. He would also rest his chin on his knees,
thanks for posting this clip if you read any of these posts Hey Michael how about doing a concert in Australia would be great to see you down under!!!!!!!!!!!!
It dont get any better than this...I was a teen when I first heard this song back in 80s and got Murphey's tape..I wore it out...I think Murphey is one of Americas best songsters..Heard him live for first time in Hicory NC.....back in early 2000s took my wife..we really enjoyed the music and Murpheys outlook on life as well..God Bless you Michael!
What a great great song...everything about it. Thanks for posting this "early" version!!! I just watched the Letterman version when he was a bit older...ok, a lot older!
The musicianship in this is outstanding beyond words ! ! ! ! ! ! The unbridled joy on MMM's face, Dave's fingers flying across the piano making the sound of raindrops falling, and the happiest instrument on earth - the banjo. I saw them at a pops concert in Phoenix about the time they recorded this - WoW ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Hey Michael- David Ferretta, the Global Village in Denver, Red Rocks...
those were good times... love your music then and now... you stayed at my house one night in denver rather than drive back to evergreen becasue you had to pick up your dad at the airport the next day.... you signed the "wall" in our kitchen and made me famous forever!
I have always loved this song! It is magical and romantic and yes, I can smell the pines and feel the cool, dampness of mountains and smell wood smoke of a campfire, too.
Ahhh, the cowboy poet. I loved listening to him in college and grad school, and worked summers at a horseback riding camp! Great musicianship throughout! My heart aches for those days!
I became a mobile disc jockey at 15 while still in high school. I had one of the largest shows of its kind in the southeast and played just about everywhere. To say the least, I have played just about every kind of music you can imagine and alot I would now call trash. It is nice to be able to go back and hear music that is just damn good! MMM is a great songwriter and musician and I am glad to find this. Whoever posted it, THANK YOU! J.HANEY known then as Pegasus Sounds and Light Productions
The Midnight Trucking show on WBAP 820out of Ft Worth used to sign off every morning with the last 15 or so seconds of the piano solo from this song. I can't count the number of days my work day started hearing it. I still smile every time I hear it. What a way to start the day.
pennycarol. THIS SONG CAME OUT WHEN I WAS 14. I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT THEN, AND ITS EVEN BETTER NOW. SO TALENTED. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO. THANKS AGAIN YOUTUBE.
Every time I go deer hunting in the mountains, I've got this song playing in my head. One of my very favorite songs. I can never hear it too many times.
This is still my fave MMM song... I live out in the country now and I sing this song by myself on the back porch all the time... The lyrics are fun and I just like it... It's a great tune...
Thanks for your post. This is a really good one. I attended an MMM Concert tonight in Phenix City, AL & he hasn't lost anything with age. He & his band were GREAT!
The used to play that one on AFN back in the eighties. Good to hear it again. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry. I have a very weird sense of humor. I don't want anyone to "drop dead". But I do believe that this song is meant for heaven!

What a great great song...everything about it. Thanks for posting this "early" version!!! I just watched the Letterman version when he was a bit older...ok, a lot older!

My daughter's middle name is Carolina because of this song!

How exhilarating! If this song doesn't light your fire, then your wood is wet.

You lucky dog I wish I could say I had been to his horse camp. I too listened to him back in the 70s.
