I love the Alleghenys also, The DMIR 2-8-8-4's were also some big ass powerful engines. I associate Big Boys with WWII. Yea I know, most of all of the big articulateds were running then. What a time that must have been to be a rail fan.
The Kings of the Rails the mighty Big Boys too bad UP got rid of them. they rulled the rails for ten years and UP snuffed their fires and bought Dash 9s instead.
@geomodelrailroader just to let you know your year of service are a bit off the big boy was interduced in 1941 and the fores where forever put out in 1961 exept for 1 or 2 that ran some up untill almost 1970
@gonzo80009871 LOL but it is in the shop for a boiler overhaul they are trying to convert it to use less water because it always overheats and since #3985 was taken out of service and put on display in the 1970s before it joined the steam program it rusted so they need to repair the boiler before it goes back on the rails.
The Big Boy is no doubt an awesome engine however, the H8 Allegheny had more HP, higher factor of adhesion and was able to produce more steam than the Bigboy do to its much larger boiler.
@BooBoo0818 Its actually not that bad, it is mostley steam with a small mix of coal dust and C02. The pollution is less than that of about 15 cars and that train is carrying way more than a car can carry. Modern diesels aren't much cleaner either.
@southparkline1 I took a ride on a small steam train in Steamtown, Pa. The car was right behind the engine. We could smell the smoke from the engine. This explains why in the old days the poor people rode behind the engine and the wealthy people rode in the cars at the end of the train. But yes the total pollution is still less than what's emitted by cars and tractor trailers. The black smoke just looks menacing.

Biggest Locomotive...
Has no one heard of the Union Pacific Huge Boy?
(It's a real Loco, just it's been scraped)

Actually, the Allegheny was taller, heavier and had far more horsepower. Big Boys, while awesome, are not matches for the Allegheny in these regards.

@996TwinTurbo911 True as that may be. The steam locomotive has a louder whistle. if I'm no mistaken. sorry if I sound rude.

@BooBoo0818 I think the smoke smells good. If it's a coal burner anyway.

Doesn't matter about audio, we can imagine it. Somewhere between a chorus of volcanoes, and Hell itself unleashing all it's fury...
