  • Baby Ace!!! I love him!

  • so it was a charity.Good for that famaily.

  • so it was a cherity.Good for that famaily.

  • My Family Lives on The Island and You Can Buy a Pony and re- release it back to the herd if you want to its youre choice to do that! Youre pony is I would Guess cold branded so you can see it the following year if you choose.. All the Money goes to the fire dept and for the up keep of the Island and taking care of the Herd in The winter time. Plus The cowboys take care of the trimming of feet and veternarian care.

  • @kgc65player My great grandmother lived on the island since the early 1900s and my grandmother and mom were both born there on the island. I use to go all the time as a youngster.

  • This colt was the one who walked ahead of the rest of them when they were walking the ponies to the auction grounds on the 2010 pony swim, he's a rebel :)

  • 9,600 dollars for a foal? Unbelivable!

Palomino Valley horses are adopted online at 2 hundreds each.

1 year stud cold at 13 hands tall was sold for 125 dollars by BLM.

  • This colt was purchased but the buyers did not take him home and they bought him knowing that. He is currently on Assateague, I saw him the other week during Pony Penning. The family that bought him named him Ace.

  • You do purchase a horse. You do get to take the horse home with you. This foal was either to young to come or they decided to keep it to enrich the herds. But usually when you purchase the foal you do keep it. I have been to Pony Penning Day and loved it. All proceeds go to the fire department and the maintenance of the horses that remain wild. It really is quite amazing! If you like horses you should definately take a vacation here! My dream is to eventually buy one!

  • when im older this is my dream.....move to somewhere near here (well first turn my £ into $) and buy a horse then train him or her.........my lifes goal shared with you all........

  • Is buy back common, or did someone just want to do it special for that colt? How much do they usually run about 2 or 3 thousand for purchase?

  • Buyback is the way the program works. Select foals and younger horses are specially picked to be sent back to Assateague. They will always be rounded up with the rest of the herd, but they will never be sold because they have been picked as "breeding stock" for the herd, if you will. All the money from buy back and selling ponies goes to the volunteer fire department and the care and maintenance of the island. It's really an awesome program.

  • i dont understand, how can it be awesome if you get your own foal, train it, love it, then have to send it back? I know i would be sad and wanna keep it

  • You don't get to keep it. That foal will never come with you, it will go back to the island. This is purely a "feel-good" thing, you do it because it makes you proud of yourself. If you look at it from the foal's perspective, it's pretty darn sweet: he'll never be sold, after every Pony Penning Day he'll get to go right back and live wild on his island.

  • yeah it would be nice for the foal.

so this person bought a foal for nearly 10,000 and he goes back to the island?

  • Yep. The money is used for the maintenance of the island and the ponies; twice a year they're rounded up, vaccinated and have their feet trimmed. The program also helps them keep an eye on the bloodlines of the horses on the island, as there are no predators on Assateague. This way they can keep the herds at an optimal level while keeping them from becoming too inbred.

  • @Cheyenne17124 No if you buy a pony you take it home with you. Don't post unless you know what your talkimg about.

  • @barbarolover4 You haven't been given a good idea of buyback lol. I've done my research so thankfully I know better than this 'you don't get to keep it' rubbish. Not all foals at pony penning are going to be old enough to leave their mothers. This is when buyback happens, it means you pay for the foal but it is sent back to live with its mother until autumn, then you collect it. Pony penning is in summer.
