when the couples change places with their vis-à-vis partners, the men lead/go ahead, which is why in Germany and Austria they sing:

"Der Herr voraus, der Herr voraus, die Dame hinterdrein...das Ganze noch mal rechts herum, so muss es immer sein!" which means something like "the man ahead, the man ahead, the lady follows him ... the whole thing again clockwise, that's how it should be."
