Seen them supporting DIO on his Holy Diver tour. Queensryche were promoting The Warning. After the concert it didn't matter who you'd asked they'd been blown away, DIO were absolutely crap in comparison, RTM has to be one of the best songs ever.

Don't get me wrong I love these guys and have been following them from the start, but it is a bit sad that some singers deteriorate more than others, probably just in the genes. There are some that still hit the high notes with ease, Ian Gillan f.i. Geoff even has a classical training, you'd think he last.

Also, think about when Tate first recorded and performed these songs he was in his early twenties. The male voice goes through a change in the ealy thirties-it starts to thicken and deepen and for many, they just can't hit those notes the same, if at all. I'm convinced that Tate takes extraordinary care of his voice and lives a very clean life, but even that may not be enough to stop the inevitable. Gillan's voice, while still great, has definitely gotten very rough, while Tate's is still clean.

I saw 'em a couple years back. it's true, he can't hit the high notes anymore,(who can?) but the rest was spot on. The show was great. my chief complaint is that, well, their new music sucks, tribe, mindcrimes 2, etc. Blech! Pure crap. See 'em in concert, they don't play that shit. They still sound good. two thunbs up for even staying alive.

Yeah I'm amazed too. I studied with his voice teacher in Seattle because I was such a fan. He was the best, but he has nothing left. Even his body shows the strain. Watch how he moves in this video and then watch a new one of him. His left hand sticking out in the new vids is almost an apologetic gesture, it seems. He doesn't even seem to have fun on stage any more.
