@pearlblack Give it a few weeks once they've made a full production model!! This is just a prototype! I'm sure your cell phone was slow as fuck the first time you had one, right? Depending how old you are...when I had my first cell phone, it was the brick flip phones and I couldn't text. Now I can do everything on my phone that I can do on my PC. :P
Great work guys! Keep working hard for humanity. One day you'll displace the entire labor force allowing us to evolve into a society of labor-less abundance! :)
we'll just have to throw out that silly economy (thank god).
I think you and I are thinking on the same level. The only communism we've ever actually seen is state run capitalism. This second industrial revolution were now in is going to catapult us out of the labor economy into something unprecedented and while it might resemble marx's ideals in some ways I think its adherence to the scientific method as a democratic process will be reminiscent of the "free market" where anybody is able to contribute. google: Zeitgeist, moving forward
There will be no "money" in the new labor-less economy.. as it won't be relevant. Of course, the power structure will try to preserve itself regardless of relevance but it will be impossible - the system will fail. I think its conservative to guess that in 20 years... using machines will become even cheaper than outsourcing labor to slaves in third world nations. Watch as literally everything automates. No doubt it will be simply amazing.
@kittyhawk501 you think they only had a 400k budget? no way! and i just want it faster, im sure they decreased the speed because of safety and security
When I worked for Androbot in the 80's Topo could get a beer from a dispenser on the fridge. Believe it or not that was 25 years ago. Looks like technology has finally solved one of the most vital problems of the human condition.
@skeight976 Ahh yes, the venus project.. We have a long ways to go but we can do it. Free power and water for anyone and everyone? its more then possibal.
That's a pretty ignorant comment. All scientific projects are interrelated, this is an incredible feat of engineering, the knowledge of which can have any number of applications. The choice to have to fetching beer is just a fun gimmick, it's irrelevant to the underlying achievement. Robots like this will some day be helping the infirmed in their homes.
amount of time you spent making this robot would be more than the time it would take you in your entire life to get all the beers you needed, but oh well
@kablorte I know I sounded rude, but it was not my intension, I deleted the message because I know I made it harmful. As I told to one of the creators that reponded my comment, what I mean is not that this is a bad project, just that science in general, is going to a point where the use of the natural skills are losing. I know this is a very good work and for sure it taked a lot of work (and specificly this is great), and I admire that, but, we have seen the product of science without humanity.
@Kali23Yuga Considering God gave you eyes, hands, legs, memory, the brain to make alcoholic drinks and build robots, (as well as the soul to appreciate it) I'd say technology vs God = 1 - 100
For God's sake, is that robot running a Pentium II with 32MB RAM? How long does it take to identify a beer bottle?
I appreciate the effort to create robots, but guys, the main thing expected of a robot is to be EFFICIENT. Like, saying "Get me a beer", and having it placed on your table 10 seconds later, uncorked, without getting up.
I think you are the one who is slow if you can't spend 30 seconds Googling to work out that it has more than 32Mb of RAM but you sit around bitching about it's speed.
If you think it is so easy to take the first steps with robotics why don't you quit whining and post video of your robot doing something "efficiently" [I'll refrain from caps here]?
The PR2 is the result of more intellect than haters like you can imagine.
@DingofromOz Amazing how every time a person dares to criticize something, everyone else gets defensive. Do you realise just how pathetic you sound when calling me a "hater" for criticizing a bloody ROBOT? Are you two relatives or something?
Honestly, the demonstration in this video was not impressive. That's the unpleasant truth.
I do wish the team good luck, and hope they'll get rich of selling robots similar to the ones in I, Robot, for all I care.
@DingofromOz Calm down, this robot is cool, but slow as hell... it´s slow, 6 mins for a beer with the fridge open its a lot.
And well, Im an engineer too, I know that doing this is hard... but don´t try to sound smart, this robot is slow, veeeery slow and you can´t do anything about that.
@captaingynu Not ment to be practical. The robot is multi function. They make it do all kinds of things. This is a test of the robot identifying objects (bear bottle, human face), manipulating things designed for humans (fridge door), interfacing with a web app, etc. This isn't a product. Don't look for this at walmart. Have a nice day.
so I want to spend thousands of dollars on a robot that takes 5 minutes to get me a beer that is 15 feet away when i could do it myself in 30seconds for free?
really cool but by the time the beer actually arrived I already need another one. 2 things can solve this. 1- stop drinking or drink slower... NOT GOING TO HAPPEN 2- built a faster robot.
