  • It just hangs. I can't get to the recovery console. I guess my computer is dead, this is so frustrating.

  • I bought laptop on internet---Windows became corrupt. Tried to re-install with my Win xp upgrade cd, but it wil not acknowledge key code. What should I do?

  • @01silkpurse If you can't make the keycode work you will need to buy another copy of Windows.

  • can i use this for my windows XP hoMe?

  • @aGApZ2 Yes it works with Home also.

  • Thanks man you r great!!!!!

  • My Issue was: XP Boots to Black Screen With Blinking Cursor

This fixed my issue by running FIXMBR

Now Ye Old XP SP 3 is running fine again.

So if your XP suddenly starts booting to a Black Screen with Blinking Cursor, try this tutorial...

If this still doesn't work make sure your hard drive is not bad first by running some kind of HD diagnostic tool.

    Anyway thanks!... Great Tutorial!

  • Does this fix bootkits?

  • Thanks! you fixed my computer!

  • Thank you very much. Your concise and easy-to-understand video allowed me to fix my master boot record in about five minutes and my computer is booting up perfectly. Again, thanks very much.

  • Hi I just posted and I don't see a way to edit my post so I'll add additional details on this same post.

    What I did:

    1. Enter windows recovery mode when I open computer

    2. type 1 and press enter for C:\Windows

    3. type fixmbr and press enter

    4. get prompt : Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?

    5. type y, Y, n, N, every other letter on the keyboard and get prompted with the same question.

How do I proceed, what is wrong?

  • Sounds like Windows is broke. You will need to do a clean install of Windows.

  • Hi I am currently trying to use the "fixmbr" command. I've entered this from the windows recover console.

It gives me that usual warning and question at the end: "Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?

I hit ENTER --> it prompts me again

I hit "y" ENTER --> it prompts me again

I hit "Y" ENTER --> it prompts me again

Basically how do I agree to this?!

  • I've just run into the very problem and found this alternative, in case you don't have the Windows XP disk to get into Recovery Console, here's what you could do with Hiren Tool disk:

    * Insert Hiren Utility Tool disk

    * Press the required F-key to choose which system you want to boot from Choose Hiren

    * Choose Mini Windows XP

  • * Once Windows starts, there's an HBCD Menu. Double click it.

    * From pull-down tab, choose: Partition / Boot / MBR In the sub-tab, choose Command line folder. Inside the folder, choose MbrFix

    * A command prompt opens.

    * Type "mbrfix / drive 1 driveinfo" (click enter)

(less quotes) (check if it's the right harddisk, if not change the number after drive.)

    * Type mbrfix / drive 1 fixmbr (click enter)

    Confirm with "y" (click enter)

    * Close window then restart.

    Finished.

  • does windows 7 have a recovery console?

  • It was removed from Vista/7 and replaced with similar tools that can be accessed from the System Recovery Options Menu on the install disks by selecting Repair.

  • i cant go to C:\windows can u help me i dont know what to do it show this one (C:\>_) how do i go to (C:\Windows>)

  • You can type at the prompt dir and see what directories or folders are available. To change the prompt to a directory name type cd windows or any directory name available. The cd is short for change directory.

  • @erenei

    on the C:\>

    cd windows\

  • type Enter

  • type enter

  • I tried out installing the recovery console to the hard drive in a virtual machine windows xp and when I select the recovery console option from the boot menu I get the loading bar then I get a bsod

  • can i use this to recover deleted registries and deleted windows file without installing windows again???

  • Can someone answer me? Will FIXMBR command delete my files from the HDD? Is it safe to use it without backing up my files? I checked previously there are no viruses or malware on that disk. And what about other similar commands in recovery console. FIXBOOT or BOOTCFG? I am asking this cause I am having BSOD error 0x00000024 NTFS.SYS I can't hear the sound in this video cause I'm running the safe mode. Thank you.

  • And if I fix the corrupted MBR are there anymore steps I should take to erase this threat (I have since stocked up on all the highly regarded free anti-spyare/anti-malware tools)?

BTW, thanks for the video, I appreciate it!

  • I have a corrupted MBR likely from some Trojan, and it has been setting up a help assistant user from what i have read is likely rendering an outside user remote access to my PC. Windows is running fine, as I have removed all signs of the infection except the corrupted MBR, so should I try and fix the MBR regardless? Also, is the same procedure followed for Windows XP Home?

  • hi , i have a problem , when she ask me type the administrator password , i d'ont know what to type , and d'ont have a administrator password to my pc , what u type in that moment ??? please reply

  • You will need to set an administrator password and then use it to access the Windows partition under the recovery console.

  • I can't load Window at all. Not Safe Mode or last known config. How to setup a password then? Thank you.

  • You can use a tool like Ultimate Boot CD For Windows that can set a password.

  • @frenchge i can't reset the password unless i'm logged on and i dont want to wipe/format my computer.. i also have windows xp professional if that makes a difference

  • There are several good free password reset programs available for download on the Internet. I have a YouTube video on one. You can find it by searching password reset or password crack.

  • you dont need a password just hit enter.

  • @UniKArmanI

If you don't have an admin password on the computer, just press the 'ENTER' key and you are through.

  • This video was very useful to me. Thanks a lot!!!
