HELP, PLEASE! My mud turtle, "Ned", just laid an egg - neither his previous owner nor I had a clue "he's" a she! The egg was laid in a soft blanket. I have no idea how to "incubate" it and would appreciate any advice! Thanks!
If there is no male, the egg is not fertile, so you can dispose of it. If she has been around males in the past year, it might be fertile. Incubate at about 82 degrees. Keep the environment humid. You can place the egg on sand, sphagnum moss, vermiculite, whatever. You don't have to bury the egg. Be sure to lightly mark the top of the egg with a pencil and keep that side up until it hatches (if it does). You must not roll the egg or the embryo will not survive.
I'm so grateful for your quick reply! I finally talked with the previous owner this morning and discovered that Ned's former mate died over a dozen years ago, so my panic at how to incubate the egg was for nothing! But we're amazed that Ned (Nedette), who's at least 16, is now producing eggs (2 so far) after so many years of barreness! I loved your 4 videos and almost wish Ned's eggs WERE fertile! Hopefully, your great advice will be helpful to others! Again, THANKS SO MUCH!
@skbruning ok what you need to do is put the eggs in a small contaner with air holes at the top with a bit of dirt a the bottom and keep them a around 85 degrees farenhight.
that's the yolk sac. Turtle hatchlings are born with a yolk sac which will sustain them with nutrition for a short time until they can hunt for food on their own.
Your female 3 striper is a tank! How big is your male? I feel like my male mud is a dwarf, he's barely 3'' SCL and he hasn't grown since the day I got him. But congrats on the eggs! That's awesome. I'll be looking forward to your video!
Thanks CrazyTurtles, have been planning on doing a video of the whole tank for months, just haven't gotten around to it. Will try to get something together soon. My female 3-striper laid 5 eggs today, should hatch first week in April.
Awesome video Muddy! This is what I'm looking forward to at some point. I did catch my stinkpots mating on Christmas for the first time since I acquired my male! But awesome video, I looked at your other two as well. Do you think you could record your whole tank? Maybe zooming in here and there? I looked awesome in the turtle scratching vid!
here in Florida, turtles can lay eggs all year long but mostly do so in the Spring. My turtles are indoors so they have no idea what the season is and they lay eggs throughout the year.

No, softshell turtles have relatively soft shells and long, pointy noses. Mud turtles more closely resemble musk turtles. Mud turtle shells are hard.

take good care ;) by the way i thought mud turtle has a long nose and had a soft shell and their head looked sorta like a pig's head?

My male mud was aquired as an adult and has grown only 1/8 inch in a year.
No, I don't sell my turtles. I don't often keep the eggs but do once in a while and release the hatchlings about a month after hatching.
BauriBob 2 years ago
cool, do you breed them to sell?
