why did they all work with him for 16 years if he was such a bad guy.he seems alright.I guess everyone would like a little more money.this goes on in almost all bands after they break up.just glad they got together at all.
Rick Danko, as much I loved the guy, had serious drug issues and made some seriously bad personal decisions. Richard Manual suffered from depression. At the end of the day we all are responsible for our own lives and conditions. I agree with MrWittlez. Blaming Robertson for their deaths is unfair and absurd. If not for Robbie, ...The Band? Never would have been,
@ClemsyDiggs Furthermore, the reason Robbie wanted The Band to stop was to try and save their lives. Levon thought he was full of crap, until they started up again in the 80's then whoops someone died.
Robbie didn't just crawl out from under a rock, and truth be told he was the most sober and stable of the members after Garth. All of them are/were great. But Robbie wrote tons of those songs.
It seems to me that it is very fashionable to dislike Robbie, but I mean he did put alot of effort into The Band just as the other's did and I mean in a way he deserves all the credit he's gotten, seriously he was writing most of the songs. But then again he has also taken to much credit too, but going as far a to say that he is to blame for Richard and Rick's death's are going a bit over board!
What happened to them after the Band broke up was strictly up to them.

Rick and Richard would probably be alive today if not for Robbies actions. He is a thief and an egotistical piece of crap. When I hear Levon sing, it takes me back to my youth. He is the greatest performer in the world.
This clip would be better if other members of the Band were interviewed. But Robbie likes the spotlight, and hes the one in front of the cameras. I respect Robbie's guitar playing, and I think he can really write, but he didnt do it by himself, despite what he may think.
i love robbie but i feel he left the band in 1978 when the last waltz movie came out and never wanted to come back cause when they reformed he never came back and i heard levon didnt want the band to break up
Mafois re écoute les albums: Highway 61 revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin', The Times They Are A-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Blood on the Tracks, The Basement Tapes, Desire, Hard Rain
your a retard i think robbie is the band yeah after he wrights all there songs he can be replaced i think levon rick garth and richard are awsome but no robbie no band
Uh no, you're the retard here dummy. Why don't you go read Levon Helm's autobiography and then review your comment so you can see how ignorant you are?
Robertson is credited with writing all of The Band's songs because he fucked Levon Helm over, which is why they have been feuding for decades and partially why the band split and never fully reformed.
Also, his guitar playing is decent, but its too mechanical / choppy. It would've been easy to replace him especially since Clapton wanted in.
Robbie wasn't the Band. They were a collaborate effort. But he took liberties and "stole" all the credit for all those song. He essentially ripped his bandmates and "friends" off..Robbie is living like a king while the others have to hustle for work at their age. Damn look what happened to Richard Manuel and Rick Danko...I hope he doesn't sleep like a baby at night...
@LBjim I agree...Robbie always promotes the concept that he was thankful for having these 3 great singers to write for and Garth for the musicianship but he seems like a prick...there's gotta be a reason Levon hasn't worked with him since 1976!
I've read Levon's book and I agree with you. Robbie took 95% of the song credits and the others got"pencil-whipped" out of their money. When you know damn well they all had a big part in the writing of the music.
The world ain't black and white. Robbie was the business man of the band, no doubt about it. But Levons wrath has also to do with the fact that while Levon and the others had a good time on alcohol and drugs, Robbie hung out with movie stars and money men...That doesn't make him a bad guy...
ThomasBox180, Business is business. But It would have been an honorable thing for Robbie not to take full credit for most of the writing when they all contributed. you are right about Robbie, he was the business man and the other guys didn't know what was going on. I guess Albert Grossman infleuence had a lot to do with Robbie's business sense.
I've read Levon's book and, while I really like Levon and believe him to be extremely talented, my jury is out until I read the autobiography that Robbie is supposedly working on. Robbie should have the opportunity to address the accusations and give his version. I do wonder why he hasn't published it yet, though. Is he waiting for Levon to die so he'll have the last word?

He's the Paul McCartney of the Band. Loads of talent, but just can't get in front of enough mirrors, or read enough of their own clippings

It's way better to hear Robbie talk then to hear him sing! (ouch). After reading Levons book, he seems so pompous!
