Well, I would say good effort from him! I'm sure he tried his best. But frankly speaking, very few of our government officials can speak decent chinese and seeing them struggle with the language really reminded me of classmates who took CLB.
I think it was a mistake for him to do his speech in Mandarin when he can't speak it. Speaking off hanyu pinyin from the teleprompter makes him sound insincere. The more he speaks in Mandarin the worse it gets, just like Tin Pei Ling, the more she speaks, the worse people's impression of her gets.

I think it was a mistake for him to do his speech in Mandarin when he can't speak it. Speaking off hanyu pinyin from the teleprompter makes him sound insincere. The more he speaks in Mandarin the worse it gets, just like Tin Pei Ling, the more she speaks, the worse people's impression of her gets.
