hahaha...good old bloodsport!!! Let me tell you whos NEXT!.....its SCOTT ATKINS....Check out the best of Yuri Boyka......The most complete fighter in the world!!!
@Andhaira well yeah, but bruce lee and Jean Claude are legends because hey made breakthroughs for action cinema, especially in the USA, in other words they did it first. Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Tony Jaa etc. are all well known and popular true, but none of them have made a huge mark in movies like JCVD or bruce lee.
Well I am not so sure about Jackie Chan, I think maybe he is legend status.
I like Jean Claude and Bruce Lee but I can't agree with Bolo. I think there were many great fighters that came after; how about Chuck Norris and Jet Lee. I think Jackie Chan also brought some style. Silvester Stallone was good also as I recall. It's tough to say who is best, but why bother, they were all good in their own way.
@Happyturtlebeach While I admire your optimism, Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris both predate Jean-Claude Van Damme by a long shot, and Sylvester Stallone is simply not a martial artist. At least, not in the same way as, let's say, Bolo and Jean-Claude.
@omnidye Yea, I was mostly talking about fighters after Bruce Lee. Oh, about Stallone, yea I actually meant Steven Seagal, they kinda blend together in my mind.
@Happyturtlebeach Oh, right, yeah. I forgot that YouTube commenters don't take the time to think about what they're saying before they hit "post." My mistake.
Its interesting how Bolo became such an iconic recognizable character in his own right even in the shadow of Bruce Lee. He was simultaneously intimidating and likable. I felt that if he had better English skills he could have been even more of an international star. But he's still one f the most recognized martial artists on the planet. And hs tai chi skills are beautiful, if you've seen him perform them.
What about Jet Li? After Van Dammes movies dried up ( not in a bad way ) at the end of the 90's Jet Li's started in America / Hollywood with Romeo Must Die / Kiss Of The Dragon etc
Bolo's right there's no real martial artists anymore these days i actually didnt realize that until now when he said that. This generation is too busy making Twilight movies and remakes of super hero movies anymore, it's sad. All the GOOD actors are now either too old or dead.
What are we grading after? Big as in best real time martial artists? Or movie star success. I mean guys like Tony Jaa... he has one movie, Ong Bak. Scott Adkins? Probably realtime badass but how many movies has had the lead in? Jet Li? No way he is bigger than Jackie Chan (maybe in China).
All the fanboys here don't understand that Van D is laughed at even as a B movie actor. He may be the biggest for 14 year olds though. As I said the genre is extremely small and that's why neither of these are big. Jackie Chan is the only one that has even come close to a broader audience.
In terms of international recognition, yes he hasn't but being famous doesn't mean you're better. It's all about originality and setting new standards in martial arts choreography. Donnie already surpassed Van Damme long time ago and keeps getting better. What has Van Damme and Chuck done lately that has been so great?
Hey man, seriously there has been NOONE after Van Dam. Not one . Sure there has been small time movies but nothing on the level of Van Dam. Not even close. Van Dam was bad ass. U cant even argue it. Only one I can think of that comes close is Jackie Chan, But hi smovies are not the same . They are not even the same rating at the shows. Jackie is bad ass too but he makes kids movies. And VandAm was totally adult. Whip ass stuff.
I believe Jackie chan is not to be compared with those ''actors' cause jackie did everything he broken all his bones..... and did all his stunts and is a real martial artist.... watch his old movies and even before he was just a backup crew guy.... it's total insane
In the HOLLYWOOD STYLE Brucelee + van damme no problem but over all sorry jackie all the way
lol Bolo. Van D was never big. Jet Li was never big either. Heck Bruce Lee was never big either. That genre is and was a very small one. The biggest one is Jackie Chan because he was not trying to do serious movies. He escaped his bad acting with comedy, while the other ones didn't, mainly because they thought they were good actors which is all very lolly.
Umm...Jet Li?? He came after Van Damme. Anyway, if not for his untimely death, Brandon would have been a good successor to his dad. After Lee we had Norris, Segal, Van Damme, etc. But in answer Bolo's question of "why" nobody else....the answer is: those type of martial arts/action films (unfortunately) just don't have the same popularity that they once did. I doubt if you'll ever see another "Martial Arts" superstar. :-( But at least we still have the old movies to watch & cherish. :-)
@DrFerchichi I think he means globaly speaking, martial arts today is a sub genre, jacky chan and jet li come to be international stars in average.but and jacky chan was never taken much seriously. and jet li never reached the top. but I have to admit, van dame was one of the last martial artsit who was worldly known, but I guess chuck norris and some other may have been added, most of actual martial movies are released directly on disk outside asia, but ofcourse bolo was flattering
@cyberhmoob jackie chan and jet li had their go. But you have to remember, van damme is an actor. That's the extent, he's no kumite winner. Unfortunately, the reason it "ended" with JCVD is because nowadays people watch UFC. We don't like watching scripted punches and set up kicks
@0ptimyze I don't agree with you. Martial Arts is still very strong in the MOVIE industry as shown in many successful modern Martial Arts related movies. The problem today is there's no ICON. Nobody skill enough, dedicated enough to the arts, forms & tradition of Martial Arts to claim Bruce Lee's throne. You know no matter how good you are if you are not living the Martial Arts way, you can't be a successful Martial Arts Icon. This is what's missing today.
@xbooooox I went and watched those. He's cool & I thought his movies were pretty good. It just didn't have the martial arts feel that Van Dam & Bruce Lee had in their films. Martial Arts feel was lacking but it was ok. Not enough epic fight scenes to be the next Van Dam and Bruce Lee. Pretty close though.
Nothing ended with Van Damme lol. Bloodsport continued the competition type of martial arts films that Enter The Dragon had already brought so it ain't exactly original. You wanna talk icons regardless of style and international recognition: Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Jet Li, and right now Donnie Yen. They have revolutionized general martial arts film-making in so many ways that Van Damme would dream of.
@DooKTheFresh i think he's talking bout American martial art stars. The ones you mentioned have all been HK ones that have been in the business since Bruce Lee's death. But Bolo is right, I can't think of any MAJOR American martial art star since Van DAmme. Van Damme during his time was undisputed (martial arts ) action star.
whoa bolo is so thin!! but seriously, is he REALLY comparing JCVD with Brucel Lee ?? he CAN'T be serious, i'm guessing he only did it cause JC was sitting right next to him...
@Sniped505 Bolo is talking about movies/cinema! Not real fighters man. In martial arts movies Van Damme was the last big icon. if somebody asks you about the big martial arts actors you think of bruce lee, chuck norris and van damme
