the metric system uses kilometers, which is a thousand meters.

@2AgentSmith2 There is such thing as a metric mile, it's used sometimes in motor racing and means a distance of 1500 metres unlike a standard mile. I don't know why it's used or where it originated from but it is a valid distance.
