I have a very legitimate and honest question, why do many Black Americans use this word to refer to one another? I happen to be Black myself, but I feel that I need to get to the bottom of this. Replacing the "er" with an "a" doesn't make it any less offensive.

I think China and India are kicking butt on productivity these days compared to the rest of the world...and neither of those populations is considered white or black. I was brought up in the hood as well. Everyone said the word all the time around me. I moved OUT the hood, and got exposed to different environments. I was a black kid living two doors down from a Klansman that used to come out on his porch and threaten me with his shotgun, as well as called me every degrading word in the book. The word has a horrible past with me, and to degrade me in that type of way is disrespectful.
