That lens adapter also costs about $450 retail from Sony!!! I figured that if I'm going to have to spend that much money for an adapter, that adds considerably to the cost of the camera and I might as well get the A77.
How's the shutter sound? A quiet shutter is a real asset when shooting on the sly. It's unfortunate Sony didn't go with a full articulating screen instead of this crippled version. Also in-body IS would have been a big plus when using adapted lenses.

Ibeplu makes a great point. Do you lose autofocus controls with nikon lens? That would be a massive drawback to leave out, and if that is the case, then shame on you. It is understandable, you are just trying to sell the camera, not help people make an informed decision.
@battousaikicks Shame on us? Seems a bit excessive. All lenses besides Sony A lenses will be manual focus with an adaptor. You still have aperture control, however. We do not go into all the details on third party lens options with mirrorless cameras anymore, as they have all functioned the same since the Panasonic G1.
No cons? Also, it's a bit misleading to say that you can use lenses from other brands without any drawbacks. I'd bet you lose autofocus and control of the aperture on most lenses.
@ibeplu if you're gonna shell $1349 on a camera like this, you better know how to do manual. if you rely solely on autofocus then you wont have as much creative control. you'd basically be paying for a really expensive and powerful point and shoot. also your aperture would be manually controlled on the lens ring itself
@CalvinPixels The 5n has the same manual controls, however they are selected in the menu, where the three dials of the NEX-7 allow you to control any common settings easily.
mrdg12 continuing question here regarding post below:
I am in the midst of finishing selling all of my Canon gear that I spent way too much money on in the past, but became very good at learning the art of photography. I love bokeh, and I love portraits. I am really worried about the variable aperture in the NEX emount lenses.
Hope you can help out with some strong advice. Thanks!
@mrdg12 The LA-EA2 adaptor does a great job, but remember that you will lose a 1/3 stop of light, and the Sony A mount lenses do not have stabilization. Also, when shooting video with autofocus, the LA-EA2 fixes your aperture at F3.5.
Of course, the current Sony E mount lens line is quite small, so some a mount lenses would be a good option until the NEX lens line grows a bit. I'm not a huge fan of variable aperture zooms myself.
Jordan or anyone who can help at TheCameraStoreTV, I am on the list with you for a call when these are in, but stressing out question I have is does one stick with the 18-55, 55-210, and 50 1.8 E Mounts that are MEANT for the NEX series, or should I truly consider the LA-EA2 and purchase something like the Sigma 17-55 f2.8, Sony 1.4 SLT, and which ever tele zoom I like? This is where I am so confused. With using the adapter, am I defeating the purpose and losing quality somehow? Please help.
Can you please tell me what adapter you used to add the Nikon lens... there are sooooo many out there, but I guess you used a pretty good one?? Also when using the adapter with a Nikon lens would the VR still work? Thanks!!!
hello there , nice informative review . i have one important Question .. i am planing to enter the Professional photography world . not for living of course .
i wanna know if this camera can do all the functions of a DSLR camera such as the canon 60D .
so my Question is , do U recommend this camera over canon 60D or nikon d5100 ??
please guys press like button for the rest to see it .
@drawab1 Skill, experience and technique are more important than equipment. I believe there are books on how to become a pro, and they give advice on the business-side of shooting. For the time being, I suggest you just enjoy your shooting and get more experience
Lenses with good image quality should be your 1st priority. You can fit Leica M lenses on a nex 7. Nikon users - Nikon 24/1.4g, zeiss 35/1.4, zeiss 50/2, nikon 85/1.4, Leica R 100/2.8, then a d3x. Then buy $50k medium format system!
@drawab1 The image quality from the NEX-7 is quite a bit better than the 60D. I still like to have an optical viewfinder when shooting action, but for everything else, the NEX-7 does it all in a much more portable package.
@jaredhayes1994 No - most dslr features are surprisingly of little use. I have a nikon d3x and have little use for most of its features. The nex 7 will do all you need, and you can fit many excellent lenses on it. DSLR`s are dinosaurs. With hindsight, I would have delayed buying my d3x and bought a nex 7 with leica m lenses. "Luminous Landscape" gave the nex 7 a wonderful review
Will a NEX camera ever have a full frame sensor? Looking at the nex7, the diameter of the lens mount is similar to that of full framed cameras. I known there`s more to it than lens mount diameter, but it`s a good start!
The problem is that many people are stuck and lost in recent technology. A great machine full of unnecessary features, and the crowd was gone. Nex week, and has developed a very nice machine. special treatment is a major piece of functionality. PhotoShop CS5 whose management and computer sony nex7 evaluate the new machine! large excess of the Canon or Nikon would expect a big fan of mainframe design photographer! Oo, but great! Nex 7 super good machine!
This is the camera I've been waiting for. Amazing! Going to buy this one with the sony 50mm 1/8 lens! Can't wait till it comes out! Great video guys ;)
I love my Nex-3. Have all the lenses for it. What is the name of the adapter so that I can use any lens, no matter the brand? Is the NEX-7 still take E-mount lenses? I'm so invested in them.

@xxbluejay21 it was a curious question since this camera is amazing even to make paid gigs, once you get it attached to a rig with mics and maybe a field monitor, because dont know if the HDMI provides live view, this on a GlideCam 2000 would be a dream!
Nex 7 very nice, but I'm still sooo glad I have my Seiko/Epson R-D1 digital rangefinder. It is an anolog camera with a digital sensor. All the controls are external. Way ahead of it's time as no one has cought up with it's interface even as of today.
Hey, ive had a sony nex 3 for awhile and i was thinking of switching to something higher, and i was probably thinking of going for canon but now the nex-7 is out, and im kinda confused as to get this or a canon. I'm basically into street photography, so i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction?
@mshahtan For street shooting, I'd lean towards the NEX-7. It's much more discreet, especially with the 24mm, much quieter than a DSLR, yet is still gives you quick access to all commonly used controls. Plus, your NEX-3 lenses will fit right on.
I've tried a Mamiya 55mm 1.8 lens via a 42mm adapter - fun but overall not too impressive. Tricky to focus and not as sharp as my Canon 50mm 1.8 Mk1 lens. Still fun to try out and the adapter was real cheap on E Bay.
Its funny how the security guy tackles the guy that came too close, and then comes back in the scene like nothing happen hahahahaaaaa! I guess im the only one that thought it was funny...
@snupcho Unfortunately, there is no in-body stabilization in the NEX line. As far as the AF motor, that is included in the new LAE2 adaptor. This will let all the Alpha and older minolta lenses autofocus, just like they do on a DSLR.
@Aldehyde74 A Nikon 55mm lens will be an 82mm equivalent field of view. The 5D II and NEX-7 are quite different cameras, the 5D II has great low light performance, and that great full frame imager, but the Sony is a better street camera due to its size, and the ability to mount almost any lens is a huge bonus.
Having those easy access exposure controls means this is the first camera where i can see some real value in having a big display on the back. A solid view finder though is a must for me and this camera seems to have all my needs.
I really like the way you explaining things and your style of doing video is just right for my taste. Thanks a lot, I'm looking forward to your new videos, great job!
@abslondon24 you might as well just get a canon, i have an nex3, i dont need anything more. if i wanna shoot in 1080p, which i never do, ill just get a camcorder.
i hope it.s 1299 dollar

@BLINDCROW91 The NEX-7 was postponed due to the disaster in Thailand. There is still no confirmed ETA, but the camera can be pre-ordered on our site.

Would you recommend buying the NEX-7 or a DSLR? I'm not new to taking photos and like manual tweaks :)

I WISH THE NEX-7 HAD THE SAME SENSOR AS THE 5N. I don't really need more than 5mp lol...

Does it have image stabilization and AF motor inside the body like the Sony alpha models?
snupcho 4 months ago
@snupcho Unfortunately, there is no in-body stabilization in the NEX line. As far as the AF motor, that is included in the new LAE2 adaptor. This will let all the Alpha and older minolta lenses autofocus, just like they do on a DSLR.

@TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan! I guess that makes A77 the better choice (if size is not a priority) although the mirror loses some of the light...

Come on why did you forget the GPS??? The only thing which is missing in this beautiful cam

when use....lets say nikon 55mm then how much the crop factor will be after the adapter ? and which one you prefer canon 5d or this one
Aldehyde74 4 months ago
@Aldehyde74 A Nikon 55mm lens will be an 82mm equivalent field of view. The 5D II and NEX-7 are quite different cameras, the 5D II has great low light performance, and that great full frame imager, but the Sony is a better street camera due to its size, and the ability to mount almost any lens is a huge bonus.

More informative reviews and a hint of comedy = better than Digital rev

Having those easy access exposure controls means this is the first camera where i can see some real value in having a big display on the back. A solid view finder though is a must for me and this camera seems to have all my needs.
FrodoDojo 4 months ago
Fun preview, entertaining presentation. More close ups of the camera would be nice. AND, a look through the eye-level finder would have been perfect.

@abslondon24 If the manual control dials, brilliant viewfinder, higher resolution, and manual movie mode appeal to you, than absolutely.

@TheCameraStoreTV thanks a lot ! really appreciate it :)
abslondon24 4 months ago
@abslondon24 you might as well just get a canon, i have an nex3, i dont need anything more. if i wanna shoot in 1080p, which i never do, ill just get a camcorder.
avor 3 months ago
@abslondon24
it really all depends on how you are wanting to use it. Do you want a built in EVF, more megapixels, and comparable ISO performance? get the 7
do you want a simple, cheap alternative that takes great pictures but has a lack of full manual controls? stay with the 5, or IMO, upgrade to the 5n.
