The Other Boleyn Girl is a totally inaccurate book even though it is written by an historian. Better to read Alison Weir on Anne Boleyn as you will get the truth as she researched it very well and was very sympathetic to Anne's cause.
This actress actually does look like Jane's portrait. I agree Anne and Jane were both calculating. But what tips the scale in Jane's favour for me is that she was kind to Mary at a time when the poor girl was out of favour. Anne of Cleves and Kate Parr were kind as well (though I've heard Mary and Kate's relationship became distant later), so the lady of the hour certainly didn't have to be cruel to become Henry's queen. This portrayal made Jane seem like a great lady.
wow....I like this Jane..!!! when she says that Anne was innocent...it makes me believe that she was truly a good woman..but I hate Jane in the tudors season 2 when she is preparing for Henry and Anne is preparing for her execution..
The book on Lady Rochford even has difficulty in explaining how someone such as herself, who was so careful in staying clear of all the court intrigues, could show such a lapse of judgment in covering up for the adultery of Catherine Howard. It could have been a hidden resentment toward Henry for having her husband executed, loveless marriage or not, or perhaps because she took pity on the teenaged Catherine for being married to an old and fat man. Gossip and spying at court were still high.
Agreed! Have you seen the recently published book about Lady Rochford? The author reveals a softer and much more attractive image of her (attitude as well as physical appearance), and denies that she had any complicity in accusing George and Anne Boleyn of their alleged offenses. Her marriage was not likely an ideal one, however, though the lack of children could have meant an inability of either spouse to reproduce. The Boleyn Girl claims George was gay, but that is ludicrous.
I agree that Jane was not above the type of scheming found in any number of other women desiring to become Queen, but she clearly did not possess the raw ambition or the cruelty that Anne Boleyn could wield. She was also not as intelligent as Anne, and therefore was easily manipulated by her ambitious relatives. (Look, she was 27, still not married, and living at home!) The only wife who did not have any self-seeking agenda was Anne of Cleves, and she ended up in the best manner.
Jane Seymour was impatient to became queen. She was the less innocent of all the 6 wives! 5 innocents men died with queen Anne and the supposing innocent girl whose motto was "to serve and obey" was not very disturb by all that bloody! But the futur always establish the truth. She died naturally 18 months later, and edouard was weak and died young...She was everything except innocent!

He had six wives Cathrine of Aragon who bore him Princess Mary Elizabeth's half sister, Anne Boleyn who bore him Princess Elizabeth, then there was Jane Seymour who gave him Prince Edward, then Anne of Cleves who didn't bear him any children, then there was Cathrine Howard Anne Boleyn's cousin who was beheaded, then finnaly there was Cathrine Parr who gave him no children.
What an incredible montage this is! I'm such a fan of this series. I also admire Keith Michell's performance as King Henry! His Majesty tried so much to have a son with the exception of Mary and Elizabeth. I must also add that Jane Seymour made a beautiful queen and stepmother. Thank you so very much for sharing this wonderfull montage with us!

She was sweet, kind and loving person. Just because she wasn't wild and fiery like anne doesn't mean she has no personality. Not everyone can be that kind of person
Jane Seymour was an excellent stepmother. I like how she debated with the minister over Princess Mary. Henry VIII was an evil man to do what he did to his wives and children. I know Jane Seymour was able to reconcile Elizabeth and Mary to their father, and I admire her for that.
I met a woman who looks exactly like Jane's painting working at the pharmacy, all she needed was the gablehood It took everything I had not to start giggling
Anne Boleyn was also crowned. She had a very lavish coronation, one that apparently including some elements that were associated with the coronation of the ruling monarch, not the consort.
I am not sure that Jane Seymour had an inkling about 'women's rights' What she spoke out for was in fact a form of restitution of Catholicism - at least in name. This is where Jane's sympathies lay. How much of this was actually lip-service on behalf of those who supported the belief is unknown. I think you have viewed Jane with somewhat rose-coloured spectacles. This does not take away from the fact that she was indeed a brave and devout lady. Fondly remembered.

wow she died a bit quick didnt she, in reality it was 12 days after the birth right? im sure it was good portrayal of jane tho i must admit although im not a fan of jane seymour at all
In this one poor Jane felt bad that Anne died and guilty for it. I wonder if she really did feel guilt about it plus Henry lied to her about what he would do to Anne.
yeah i dont like jane seymour but if its proved that the real jane did feel bad about what happened to anne i probably would warm a little towards her
i believe that Henry was genuinly sad about her death, but if she lived i wonder hw long before he woud hav turned from her? luckily we'll never knw.xxx
well, on the one hand i suppose no he wouldnt have abandoned her, after so many years of trying to conceive a son he wouldnt make his only living son illegitimate would he?
but i think he would have treated her like he did his other wives, by cheating on her and because she was so unlike anne boleyn i doubt she would have done anything about it and just left him to it
why would you stay quiet for HIM tho? i dnt care if a womans treated badly by their husband you don't jus 'shut your eyes and endure' you stand up for yourself im not religious or anything but 'forsaking all others' is part of the wedding vows as for a reason as are the other vows and just because he was a man didnt give him the right to break them
so anne may have lost her head but she knew where women should stand in marriages and stood up for that, you cant fault her for that
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This was a different time. Women were nothing but chattel.
If you married a man who humiliated one wife and murdered the next,I suspect we all would be quiet and submissive. Jane saw upclose that King Henry was not only cruel but quite deranged. Being possessed of common sense, she chose the best option. We all say we would do this and do that but we are looking at it through a modern woman's eyes.
If we were in that time, yes,we would shut up,ESPECIALLY with a nut like King Henry,
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i wouldnt have 'shut up'
i mean i would rather have had my head cut off than obey that prick who treated me badly i mean what kind of quality of life is that? id rather voice my opinions to him than keep my head low and in private whine about miserable the marriage is
So you would rather have been murdered? I am different. I would have known when to fish and when to cut bait. Here is a man who not only killed friends,he humiliated one wife and killed another. His behavior clearly indicates he is capable of anything once he feels he's been crossed.Like I said,I would have kissed KH8 garguantan ass at every opportunity. I would care every much about the quality of being alive.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah actually like i said anythings better than being married to someone who treats you awfully, anne knew that as she thought of her death has an escape from her pain and torment, its even said that anne always knew shed probs end up being murdered but she carried on regardlessly, inspirational is it not? i know thats how it was back then but does that justify it? back then beating a woman up was seen as a mans right but that doesnt make it just does it? anne stuck up for herself and that is
again inspirational because of the time she lived in. she was a woman ahead of her time, and knew that women shouldnt be badly treated, and like i said its wonderful that women had someone who would stand up for the rights they should have had dont you think?
I don't think Anne spoke up because she was a representative of women's rights...the concept didn't exist then. I think Anne just didn't realize that Henry would kill her for being outspoken. Had she realized this, its possible she wouldn't have been so feisty. I don't think Anne is to blame, but neither is Jane. Anne and Jane were victims of Henry VIII. Anne was killed not because she wasn't able to bear a son. Jane was only valued because she gave a son. Both women were innocent, IMHO.
I agree with both of you to a point. It all about timing though, Anne didn't know when not to push the envelope and Jane needed to learn when to. I think that's why Henry choose Anne as his second wife, she was a challenge whereas Catherine though a powerful queen, didn't really stimulate him. I think he went for Jane because he thought she'd be easy to predict and control whereas Anne could match him any day.
I agree with you as well. With Anne, her qualities were fiery and so different from what he was used to.Many Anne/Henry fans say this is what he loved about her. I doubt it. Anne's personality was a-ok during their courtship. But once they married,King Henry seems to have wanted her to totally change and become more like Queen Katherine. He did NOT like women with balls.Witness how he treated Queen Katherine because she refused to be just tossed aside, like he expected her to.

I would be the world's best doormat.
A king who humiliated one wife, killed anybody who opposed him,and let's not forget, had his second wife's head cut off because he was pissed is not to be fooled with.
I would be whatever King Henry wanted and kiss his garguantuan ass at every opportunity. No shame in my game.
You say this now,but I bet if you were in that time and married to the lunatic, you'd kiss ass too.
There is little to actually PROVE that she supported either of the king's daughters OR was such a staunch Catholic. (According to recent findings) Anne always and often too hotly stood her ground. She was not abandoned for being spirited but because she "failed" as a baby-machine. Jane's only triumph. Yet....Anne gave us Elizabeth.
Bess learned lots from Anne's example. To say the least. Standard opinion is that she supported Mary, NOT Elizabeth. And even that is questioned now. Anne was in a worse position to be a "good" stepmom, she actually tried several times to make peace/reach out to Mary which Mary haughtily refused. And whether Anne raised Liz or not...the fact remains....Had there been no Anne there would have been no Liz.
It's the best offer Anne COULD make. BOTH parties were in an AWFUL situation. And, thanks to Henry's cruelty, she did agree to it later. Poor thing. Had there been no Anne another woman would have taken her place and Mary's life would have been a tragedy all the same. And Elizabeth learned a lot from Anne's life. How could she not? Anne was her mother!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes, but Anne died when she was 3 and even then she didn't see Liz that often during that time. Liz lived away and then Anne was in the tower.
Also, that was the best offer she could make? She robs this girl of her mother and she wants to ask Mary to call her queen? Can you really call that a fair deal?
Had their been no Anne, Henry could have found another way, an easier way to divorce Katherine. One the Pope could have agreed to. Anne however, wanted to be Queen, so she dragged KOA down.
I know all this. However, her mother being killed would have an impact on ANY girl. There is no denying this.
Yes, it was the best offer. Anne did not rob Mary of her mother, HENRY made that decision. Why is the woman ALWAYS blamed for a man's cruelty? Another way? In fairy tale land, maybe. Henry considered getting rid off KOA before he even met Anne and the Pope would NEVER have agreed due to being pressured by the Emperor. Anne refused to be the king's whore, he pursued her, she accepted.
I think both Anne and Jane were clever enough in handling the King. I prefer Anne but I think Jane was neither dull nor dumb, she must have been strong and clever enough to survive in the winner side. And she was the most successful of Henry's wives, a Queen fit for him.
Plans to divorce Catherine and Henry began before Henry took a fancy for Anne. Cardinal Wolsey wanted to marry the King with a French lady. Then Anne came into scene and spoiled Wolsey's plans. Had there been no Anne there would have been Queen Renee circa 1527.
But Mary under pressure recognizaed her parents marriage to be invalid. It happened after Anne death, Mary's position got worse after Anne was executed and she finally reconciled her father after Cromwell forced her to accept her parents marriage was invalid.
I'd say she was a more intelligent stepmother. Jane was intelligent I think, she was in Katherine service first as lady of waiting, then she turned into Anne service. Yes, Jane was a wise girl under a calm appearance. Her family adviced her and she was smart enough to follow their advices.
I do blame both of them. Henry more so, but Anne is guilty as well. She pushed to get rid of Katherine and celebrated her death. She treated Mary like crap and wanted her dead.
Then Jane comes in and is good to both Mary AND Elizabeth and she gets called names.
Well, I don't blame any of the females. The reason I don't like Jane isn't what she did to Anne, it's her personality. I prefer women like Anne, and yes, I acknowledge what Anne did to Mary, but I do think Henry should be the one to get more blame for it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How do you know she wanted Mary dead? In Anne's situation, would YOU have treated the daughter of your predecessor kindly? You think Henry would even have LET her? She did NOT push, Henry pursued her relentlessly. Celebrated her death? Both she and the king wore yellow that day. You think Anne wearing black and mourning her rival would not have been looked upon as hypocrisy and as foolishness? Jane "caused" an innocent' woman to be slandered and murdered as well as her "lovers".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She cannot be blamed to be rensponsible for her relatives' actions. As for the slapping if Mary claimed to be a princess....tragic, yes. You think Elizabeth but have been treated more kindly if she had stuck to her former position or if the situation had been reversed? Both Anne and Elizabeth more than atoned for what were largely HENRY's decisions and crimes.
I understand what you were saying, but Katherine suffered a cold fate. She was left alone to die by the husband she had for years. Anne and Henry were together, but not as long as K& H where. Not to mention she was alone for years and never saw her child. Her death was slow and lonely.
I know it was Henry who sent her away, but I doubt Anne ever felt sorry for Katherine.
I would have treated her kindly! BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT SHE DESERVED. Jane treated Elizbaeth nicely. What did Mary or Katherine EVER do to Anne? To make her treat them badly? Nothing!!!! She didn't need to celebrate her death so vulgarly, and there is dispute over whether Henry actually did wear yellow.
That is a nice, modern view that simply doesn't work. Jane was in a COMPLETELY different position and situation. Plus, we know little of Jane and Elizabeth's relationship (If ever there was one) because they hardly ever met in Jane's 18 months as queen. There is no dispute that they were both relieved that Katharine had passed away. NONE.
Really? I think Anne Boleyn would disagree, given that she was MURDERED so Henry could marry Jane. People, PLEASE! Jane Seymour wasn't a kindly saint, nor was Anne a heartless harlot. They both had HUMAN traits, good and bad. David Starkey got it right IMO. He is critical of both Jane and Anne, yet aknowledges their talents and virtues as well. And in my opinion HENRY ought to be blamed, not any of the wives.
i completely agree with you. For once some else sees that Anne was not this whore, or evil woman, and that Jane was not a saint. All these submissive roles, i think Jane could be just as seductive as Anne, I mean, she took Anne's place, like Anne took Catherine's.
How was Jane a hypocrite? If a recall correctly that was Anne.
And for the record I LOVE both Anne and Jane but this fight is so ridiculous!GoddessofHyrule you say you hate Jane yet why is it every video about her you seem to watch?Show more respect for the dead. R.I.P. all six wives...
"And for the record I LOVE both Anne and Jane but this fight is so ridiculous!"
"Show more respect for the dead. R.I.P. all six wives..."
You are so right about this!It really is a stupid thing to fight over who was good and who was bad! We're dealing with 6 interesting and fascinating lives, and so they should be respected, not just Jane, not just Anne,or any of them individually, but ALL OF THEM!!!!
You got thumbs up from me for these 2 sentences:)
Melina, my Mother, who was dying of cancer, WAS replaced by a younger, prettier woman. I used to hate her AND blame her for my Mom's death. However, as time passed I learned to forgive. I saw how happy she made my Dad and my Mom even gave her blessing a day before she died. No, I do not blame Anne. I blame Henry. HE had the power, HE mistreated Mary and her mother.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Of course it isn't the same but I know very much how Mary must have felt like. No, of course Anne must be held responsible to an extent. There is no denying that once Henry proposed marriage she reveled in her exalted position. However she also had little choice in the matter. Yet it she who is ALWAYS slandered, vilified, blamed and bitched about. I pity both Mary and her mother but much of their misery was of their own doing. And Mary lost any sympathy I had for her oncw she became queen
I feel Mary is a tragic figure. Do I excuse her actions? No. However, her actions were the result of what happened to her throughout her lifetime. I mean because of the Protestants and her Father she lost so much.

threaten to poison her on multiple occasions, and urge henry to murder his child because other wise "she couldnt have a son", "marry her off to some varlet", Mary was made to serve in the household of her daughter in which she was given the worst room and reported to cry continuasly though it was henry who ordered this you cant deny anne didnt play her part in making it happen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Give me some historical records for these presumptions. Yes, Henry ordered this to break her will and Anne certainly did not prevent this and certainly was happy with it. I ask again, how could Anne have acted differently? Threats are just hot air as long as they are never carried out.

Had Anne been nice to Mary or even simply paid no or little attention to her others would have followed suit, instead she acted like a bitch to Mary. I blame BOTH Henry and Anne.

In a fantasy world filled with unicorns maybe. You think Mary would have ACCEPTED Anne's kindness? Wake up! Anne did attempt to reach a truce but due to the utterly unbearable situation for both it couldn't happen. All three women were in horrible dilemmas and each gave as good as they got.

Jane Seymour was an excellent stepmother. I like how she debated with the minister over Princess Mary. Henry VIII was an evil man to do what he did to his wives and children. I know Jane Seymour was able to reconcile Elizabeth and Mary to their father, and I admire her for that.

Therein lies the difference between Anne and Jane.
She would have kept quiet AND kept her head!
Kitty273 3 years ago
why would you stay quiet for HIM tho? i dnt care if a womans treated badly by their husband you don't jus 'shut your eyes and endure' you stand up for yourself im not religious or anything but 'forsaking all others' is part of the wedding vows as for a reason as are the other vows and just because he was a man didnt give him the right to break them
so anne may have lost her head but she knew where women should stand in marriages and stood up for that, you cant fault her for that
XxCrazygal2007xX 3 years ago 6

This was a different time. Women were nothing but chattel.
If you married a man who humiliated one wife and murdered the next,I suspect we all would be quiet and submissive. Jane saw upclose that King Henry was not only cruel but quite deranged. Being possessed of common sense, she chose the best option. We all say we would do this and do that but we are looking at it through a modern woman's eyes.
If we were in that time, yes,we would shut up,ESPECIALLY with a nut like King Henry,

yeah actually like i said anythings better than being married to someone who treats you awfully, anne knew that as she thought of her death has an escape from her pain and torment, its even said that anne always knew shed probs end up being murdered but she carried on regardlessly, inspirational is it not? i know thats how it was back then but does that justify it? back then beating a woman up was seen as a mans right but that doesnt make it just does it? anne stuck up for herself and that is
XxCrazygal2007xX 3 years ago
again inspirational because of the time she lived in. she was a woman ahead of her time, and knew that women shouldnt be badly treated, and like i said its wonderful that women had someone who would stand up for the rights they should have had dont you think?
XxCrazygal2007xX 3 years ago 5
I don't think Anne spoke up because she was a representative of women's rights...the concept didn't exist then. I think Anne just didn't realize that Henry would kill her for being outspoken. Had she realized this, its possible she wouldn't have been so feisty. I don't think Anne is to blame, but neither is Jane. Anne and Jane were victims of Henry VIII. Anne was killed not because she wasn't able to bear a son. Jane was only valued because she gave a son. Both women were innocent, IMHO.

Kitty273 3 years ago
I agree with both of you to a point. It all about timing though, Anne didn't know when not to push the envelope and Jane needed to learn when to. I think that's why Henry choose Anne as his second wife, she was a challenge whereas Catherine though a powerful queen, didn't really stimulate him. I think he went for Jane because he thought she'd be easy to predict and control whereas Anne could match him any day.
Kodanikage 3 years ago
I agree with you as well. With Anne, her qualities were fiery and so different from what he was used to.Many Anne/Henry fans say this is what he loved about her. I doubt it. Anne's personality was a-ok during their courtship. But once they married,King Henry seems to have wanted her to totally change and become more like Queen Katherine. He did NOT like women with balls.Witness how he treated Queen Katherine because she refused to be just tossed aside, like he expected her to.

Jane did plenty of things the King didn't like: Like Supporting Mary and Elizabeth. Trying to get him to spare the rebels, etc..
Anne didn't stick up for herself. she was abandoned and payed the prince for being a spirited woman.
Jane knew how to test the waters without drowning.
MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
There is little to actually PROVE that she supported either of the king's daughters OR was such a staunch Catholic. (According to recent findings) Anne always and often too hotly stood her ground. She was not abandoned for being spirited but because she "failed" as a baby-machine. Jane's only triumph. Yet....Anne gave us Elizabeth.
Elisabetta611 2 years ago 16

And? Anne didn't RAISE Elizabeth. I hate how everyone gives her credit for just having Bess.
Every thing I've ever seen on Jane has shown her supporting Mary and Bess. Anne was a bad stepmother, that has also be shown countless times.
She was abandoned for not being a baby-machine and being strong enough to argue with Henry the mad man
MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
Bess learned lots from Anne's example. To say the least. Standard opinion is that she supported Mary, NOT Elizabeth. And even that is questioned now. Anne was in a worse position to be a "good" stepmom, she actually tried several times to make peace/reach out to Mary which Mary haughtily refused. And whether Anne raised Liz or not...the fact remains....Had there been no Anne there would have been no Liz.

She learned more from Katherine Howard, who many say whose execution made her not want to wed.

Had there been no Anne there would have been no Bloody Mary
MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
It's the best offer Anne COULD make. BOTH parties were in an AWFUL situation. And, thanks to Henry's cruelty, she did agree to it later. Poor thing. Had there been no Anne another woman would have taken her place and Mary's life would have been a tragedy all the same. And Elizabeth learned a lot from Anne's life. How could she not? Anne was her mother!
Elisabetta611 2 years ago 13
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yes, but Anne died when she was 3 and even then she didn't see Liz that often during that time.
MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
I know all this. However, her mother being killed would have an impact on ANY girl. There is no denying this.
Yes, it was the best offer. Anne did not rob Mary of her mother, HENRY made that decision. Why is the woman ALWAYS blamed for a man's cruelty? Another way? In fairy tale land, maybe. Henry considered getting rid off KOA before he even met Anne and the Pope would NEVER have agreed due to being pressured by the Emperor. Anne refused to be the king's whore, he pursued her, she accepted.
Elisabetta611 2 years ago 12

So why is Anne okay for doing this and yet Jane is called spineless for also bending to the kings will?
MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
I think both Anne and Jane were clever enough in handling the King. I prefer Anne but I think Jane was neither dull nor dumb, she must have been strong and clever enough to survive in the winner side. And she was the most successful of Henry's wives, a Queen fit for him.
YeOldeTune 2 years ago
Plans to divorce Catherine and Henry began before Henry took a fancy for Anne. Cardinal Wolsey wanted to marry the King with a French lady. Then Anne came into scene and spoiled Wolsey's plans. Had there been no Anne there would have been Queen Renee circa 1527.
YeOldeTune 2 years ago
But Mary under pressure recognizaed her parents marriage to be invalid. It happened after Anne death, Mary's position got worse after Anne was executed and she finally reconciled her father after Cromwell forced her to accept her parents marriage was invalid.

MelinaPendulum 2 years ago
I would have treated her kindly! BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT SHE DESERVED. Jane treated Elizbaeth nicely. What did Mary or Katherine EVER do to Anne? To make her treat them badly? Nothing!!!! That is a nice, modern view that simply doesn't work. Jane was in a COMPLETELY different position and situation.
