My fathers parents both descended from Melungeons. Grandfathers mother name was Hannah White and his father was Bob Sydney-Fleming. My grandmother father maiden name was Ealy. They lived in Tennessee but, had some family in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. I'm doing research. Does anyone know a reliable genetic DNA service in Houston, TX?
I think his pilot was portuguese..I may have to double check.
I know he did for a fact get a Portuguese pilot and some other portuguese...and he left them on a island in the Caribbeans....which the Spainish had found and took and started questioning. Then at roanoke island...he told Lane that he would replace lane's men with his men...meaning all english he took, he would leave that many men on the island.
Micajer Bunch was one of those who migrated from the Flat River in Orange County, North Carolina to the New River. He lived in Fincastle County and later owned land in Wilkes County, North Carolina on Elk Creek. Micajer Bunch may have been one of the members of Tory Capt. William Riddle's gang.
Micajer went into Lee County,Va. near the same time as the orphan children of William Riddle. Micajer Bunch and William Ingram (Ingraham) were signers of the petition to form Lee County, Va.
William Riddle was a Loyalist in the Am. Rev., lived in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and was hung at Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North Carolina. Col. Benjamin Cleveland captured William Riddle and hung him in the Spring of 1781 at Wilkesboro, NC. After Wm. Riddle died, his wife and children moved to Hawkins Co., TN
Moses Ridle was the father of William Riddle and was of Scotch-Irish, Indian and Portuguese (Melungeon) ancestry. "Indian" - Pittsylvania County, VA Tax List - 1767; "malato" - Orange County, NC Tax List - 1755.
William Thomas Riddle was born in 1740 in Flatt River, N.C and died in 1781 in Wilkes County, NC at age 41.
Moses riddle was the brother of William riddle. Moses married Mary Gibson.
Moses Riddle was born about 1735 and died after 1785. The first record which appears to definitely be this William Riddle is the 1767 tax list, Tithables of Pittsylvania County, 1767 of persons residing in the newly formed Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He is listed as "William Ridle" and next to him on the list is "Moses Ridle (Indian)."
Valetnien Collins' DNA matches that of the Bunch family of Bertie county, NC. so apprently one of the Collins women gave her son the Collins name instead of the Bunch name. Vardy Collins had the DNA Haplogroup

Apprently Vardy matches the Bertie county, NC Collins DNA.

The majority of the Melungeon source families began to migrate to Hawkins County, Tennessee in the 1790's, Vardy Collins was still in Ashe County, North Carolina as the 1800 census reveals. I'm not sure Micijah and the others actually lived around Newmans Ridge, tho I do think there are family connections with the Ridge people. Zack Goins settled in an area of Hanwkins (later Hancock) that wasnt NR. The Goinses that came to NR seem to have been of different lines, tho they were prob related somehow, some were FPC, others werent. Also, there was more than 1 Micijah Bunch in the general area, tho the name suggests that they were related. Some of these people lived in Grainger Co.

Nichols is a name associated with the group of FPC Collinses that immigrated to the Nashville area, and they were also known locally as Melungeons to some, and "Portyghee" to others. One of Vardy's sons was married to a Nichols, tho the name is rare in the NR area.
he was actually a Tory in 1780 and probably in William Riddle's gang. According to the affidavit below he escaped, but his name is included with the group of Tories who raided Capt. Rachel BUNCH was the wife of Joseph Collins when her father Henry BUNCH wrote his will in 1776 and is probably the mother of most of Jos. Collins' children.
Now "old Thomas collins" of Orange county, VA is I believe the brother to "John Collins" of Bertie county....For Newman's ridge collins to match the DNA of Bertie county Collins and Bunch families...then that about proves it.
Now records show the "hatteras" and "Roanoke"
had moved with the Mattamuskeet in hyde county...only two names show up at that time as indian..."Collins" and "elk"...and the Collins are listed as aprentice of Gibbs (Mattamuskeet member, Bear river tribe was Mattamuskeet)
Now if you check hyde county records (Remember Hatteras island was originally listed as Hyde county)...you will see Collins and Gibbs listed on several records with King/Chief Squires of the mattamuskeet and Bear river tribe during the very early
1700's...Gibbs and Squires even signed a treaty in 1699 on behalf of the Bear river tribe. in 1765 "indian" Cati Collins was a aprentice of the Gibbs family. The Gibbs family also was in Orange county Va and Granville county NC
Now...if you research the meaning for "Gibson" you will see it means "Son of Gilbert" "Son of Gibbs"....spelling variation is Gibbes and Gibbs. The Lost Colony name list does have Gibbes. This colony also went to live with the Hatteras. All later records of the Hatteras indians said they claimed white ancestors, had beards, blue and grey eyes, and appeared mixed...also they could read from books. Hatteras was English, Indian, and Portuguese mixes.
It is well known the Collins and Bunch of Bertie married each other and both listed as Indians. The Bertie county people are known as the pell mell. Now the Portuguese story would make sense, because Portuguese ships was found in the hatteras area. Also Cabo Verde's DNA is R1A and E3A. The slavics had
R1A also and was slaves of the Moors aka Berbers. Cabo Verde is known as a Mulatto Portuguese island. Collins in Portuguese is Cabelo. Collins means "Hair" in english.
Now from my research on the Collins and Gibsons tell me these families started probally on Hatteras island...then moved into Bertie county, NC with the Bunch family. As the Saponi lived in Bertie...they joined the Saponi and moved intoOrange county, Va area...then Granville, NC. Proof of this is Valentine collins DNA which matches perfect for Bertie county Bunch. Aprently Valentine took a Female Collins last name. Vardy had
"abraham lincolns mother and wife was a melungeon and his house in springfield illinois , in the kitchen its a 100% yemeni kitchen" Ridiculous! Nobody has EVER given any proof of Lincoln's mother being Melungeon. And their kitchen was just like many other kitchens in the U.S. in that time period! U can find pics of it on the internet.
This seems to be based entirely on the fact that Hanks was a name that was counted as "free people of color" somewhere. I've never seen any evidence that her family came from this line. Hanks is a name that has never been considered Melungeon until somebody wrote it in a book a decade or two ago. And Elvis had a NA ancestor, which I guess somebody thinks means he was Melungeon. It's not the same thing.
The Turks use this "Melungeon/MelunJinn" thing for nationalistic propaganda just like the Nazis used the Aryan myths for their means. I know people will say Im anti-Muslim, but that's untrue. I'm tired of misinformation being spread on my ancestors, and almost everything this guy says can be proved wrong, or taken out of context
The one thing about this video is...he merges all the names together...there is probally only one surname out of the ones he mention which may be linked to the Moors....however what he does not say is...Moors is really Arab and White mixtures...they are better known as Berbers.....The Berbers was at a time Muslim...but after Portugual started taking areas back Christianity started spreading in them areas...so just as much muslim it could also be Christian. Google Berbers and look how they look.
A very smart old man I once knew told me that the Berber shaman and the Hawaiian Kahuna used almost identical language in their sacred rituals. I dont now how true that is, but the Polynesians were probably the most far-flung race ever.
I am a spaniard and I think that what this Musslims say could be right and if that is not right , is also ok for me. The question is that in America arrived people from Europe, say the english and the spaniards and both were banditos and thieves that nearly exterminated the poor indian people living there. The behavoiur of England and Spain in America was one of the worst crimes of a human being in his history. For shame of us Spaniards and England. I couldnt say which one was more criminal.
Nothing better to eliminate racism from the world that mixing once and again all kind of blood coming from the most distant places of the world: white with black, yellow with brown
semitic with arian, russians with amricans, europeans with africans , chinese and japanese with french and spanish.
All races and traditions mixed like in the USA to build a powerful country.
Actually....We are Native American descent from Virginia. Portuguese. irish and Scottish. and some of us have Black blood which we got from the ridge (Newman's ridge). We did not get the black blood until we moved to the ridge. Some of us got Turkish blood but the turkish blood is the smallest amount of us. Our native american blood comes from virginia tribes..mainly the Powhatan and the Manahoac. Our ancestors are buried at the Rapidan mound.
There were/are very few blacks around Newmans Ridge, how do you get that the Melungeons didnt get mixed with black blood until they moved there? Melungeons didnt come to N.R. until ca 1810, and were already mixed long before. Most likely the black blood came ALOT earlier, ie the 1600s-1700s. Most likely he NA tribes mixed with blacks and Europeans, then took up living like their white neighbors, losing their NA identity and culture in the process. My family came from Newmans Ridge.
Most people think the African wasnt smart enough to build a boat and ship to the Americas on their own.People tend to forget that the Africans built the pirimids and also the maya pirimids have huge heads with cornrolls braided hair African faces made out of black stone not found in that area. Our europeon cousins like to think that they were the first and later mixed with runaways slaves when the fact is the African was here a long time before slaves.
Whether that information is true or not, the problem comes when people try to take these unrelated facts and incidents and make a neat, tidy "Melungeon story" out of them. Alot of people think the Mayan ruins depict aliens too, but that doesnt make them a fact. The Nazis also thought the Aryan race was responsible for the Mayan, Aztec, and other ruins. But without corraborating proof, these are little more than theories, and ones that arent taken very seriously.
The first Goins MAY have been an African, but he came just as Africans were being brought to America, just as the Melungeons came to the mountains abt the same time as the whites. I'll agree that "white discovery" is a myth, but it's no better to propegate as "truth" things that are not proven, and in many cases easily disproven.
I didnt say that the first Africans were Goins you did.If you have some kind of inside knowledge on the first Goins in America then you have solved a long awaited answer that thousands of researchers have been waiting for.I agree Tim Himshaws book is interesting but I dont take that as fact.I like to go by what I see like artifacts found in mexico Maya piramids big black African heads with cornrolls dated back long before christ.
I didnt say the 1st Africans were Goins, I said the 1st Goins MAY (notice the caps) have been African! Mihil Goin shows up about the same time as the Africans were being imported. I disagree with Hashaw on the Melungo/Melungeon theory. There's no evidence that this word was used as a self-descriptor that was passed down orally for hundreds of years. You said that its a fact that Africans were here 1st, but u offer no proof, exc saying some staues look African.
The Goins are where the Moor blood comes from....if we go by Will Allen Dromgoole.
If we go by her we also know the Collins and Gibsons did not have the Black blood before the ridge, not did the other families....Will allen Dromgoole said they got that from the Goins. The Bunch family was also part of the Moors. them two families was native and moor mix (as far as I can tell). The Whig thing would make sense because most of the Melungeon families before the ridge was Tories.
There r so many inconsistancies in her stories, it would be hard 2 take Dromgoole's writings as fact. I'm not saying that everything she wrote was false, but she changed her story in some of her articles. She described Melungeons as filthy and poor, living n little shacks with dirt floors, but many Melungeons had nice cabins, owned land, and had good reputations in their community. The NR Bunches were always counted as white. There were at least 3 unrelated Goins lines n the area, some always W
Well the Bunch family I originally thought was not related...but I have found they was related. For awhile I even thought the Bertie county Collins was not related...but I have found both of them are related and apprently ancestors of some Newman's ridge families. Thebunch family went with the Collins from Bertie...to Orange county and Louisa VA...then to Granville, NC with the Collins...and was listed as "FPC" and "Indian".
P u familier with the Gideon Gibson and the SC Regulators? The Bunches were affiliated with these Gibsons 2, not sure if there were Collinses there. I believe they are all related, tho some may have been pretty distantly related by the time some of them migrated to NR. Louisa Co seems to b a common link between them all. R u familier with Phineas Bunch, the pirate? Many NR Melungeons claimd families were involved in piracy off Carolina coast. Some believe that's where Vardy got his money.
I've been talking with a gideon Gibson descendant alot lately..I was showing him how his gibson was associated with the Bunch family and the Collins of Bertie and was showing him how they are connected with Newman's ridge families. I've not studied Phineas Bunch yet...but I'll check that in a minute. My recent research has been on the NC coast...once I figured out the Bertie county familes was related I started seeing more stuff :)
Btw, are u a Goins? I assumed you were refering to Goins when u said that Africans were here a long time before slavery because u wrote "Goins" underneath.
Dromgoole did more to spread misinformation than anyone else when it comes to Melungeons. The bad part is that when newspapers and magazines do pieces on Melungeons, her articles (she did abt 3 or 4, let me know which one you have, and I can send you the others) are still used as primary sources. One exmpl is when she wrote that JnSevier discovered them in the mts, but nobody has ever found proof. In N.R. they refered to her as "Will Allen Damfool".
I have all the articles....I find some things useful in her articles. Her articles tend to get weirder though...like her first one she seemed cool....but then she started actually seeming racist toward them.
I agree. We have to remember that she was primarily a fiction writer, and in those days, journalists didnt mind embellishing their stories. You know that's true when it comes to news accounts of NA.
Songhay, West Africa was occupied by Morrocan under Al Mansur so technically one couid say Black America's forebears were Morrocan national but as that was as forced occupation of temporal duration, I guess the Morrocan nationality thing won't hold.Check out the Moorish Science sites for this.Melungeons are people whom cold be white by law,did not want to be Blak, and not part of any tribal affiliation. not good in apartheid America.
we have always claimed tribal affiliation. we did not get the black blood (not all of us have black blood) until newman's ridge. And no we have never used the Muslim religion.
Melungeons are by far mostly "white". Most people called Melungeon claimed they were white, with an Indian and/or Portuguese ancestor. If you called somebody a Melungeon a few years back, you would have been knifed, shot, or assaulted.
When I go to Newmans Ridge, I'm careful not to mention the "m" word unless somebody else brings it up first. It's mostly the older folks who dont like it, and it's more from the word's implications than it's meaning. Because nobody knows what it means. There's alot of evidence emerging that the word may have been used as a political slur early on, especially by the Whig Party. They'd slander opponents by calling them mongrels and "eboshins", whether racial mixture was true or not.

As the Saponi lived in Bertie...they joined the Saponi and moved intoOrange county, Va area...then Granville, NC. Proof of this is Valentine collins DNA which matches perfect for Bertie county Bunch. Aprently Valentine took a Female Collins last name. Vardy had
R1A...probally a match for Bertie county Collins.

I' still wondering about the Nancy Hanks thing....I know Nancy was not part of the families that migrated to the Ridge.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago

All together and mixed are the best.

Goins

I'll agree that "white discovery" is a myth, but it's no better to propegate as "truth" things that are not proven, and in many cases easily disproven.
klmullins65 3 years ago
I didnt say that the first Africans were Goins you did.If you have some kind of inside knowledge on the first Goins in America then you have solved a long awaited answer that thousands of researchers have been waiting for.I agree Tim Himshaws book is interesting but I dont take that as fact.I like to go by what I see like artifacts found in mexico Maya piramids big black African heads with cornrolls dated back long before christ.
berlinrelic 3 years ago
I didnt say the 1st Africans were Goins, I said the 1st Goins MAY (notice the caps) have been African! Mihil Goin shows up about the same time as the Africans were being imported. I disagree with Hashaw on the Melungo/Melungeon theory. There's no evidence that this word was used as a self-descriptor that was passed down orally for hundreds of years. You said that its a fact that Africans were here 1st, but u offer no proof, exc saying some staues look African.
klmullins65 3 years ago
The Goins are where the Moor blood comes from....if we go by Will Allen Dromgoole.
If we go by her we also know the Collins and Gibsons did not have the Black blood before the ridge, not did the other families....Will allen Dromgoole said they got that from the Goins. The Bunch family was also part of the Moors. them two families was native and moor mix (as far as I can tell). The Whig thing would make sense because most of the Melungeon families before the ridge was Tories.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago
There r so many inconsistancies in her stories, it would be hard 2 take Dromgoole's writings as fact. I'm not saying that everything she wrote was false, but she changed her story in some of her articles. She described Melungeons as filthy and poor, living n little shacks with dirt floors, but many Melungeons had nice cabins, owned land, and had good reputations in their community. The NR Bunches were always counted as white. There were at least 3 unrelated Goins lines n the area, some always W

yea.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago
P u familier with the Gideon Gibson and the SC Regulators? The Bunches were affiliated with these Gibsons 2, not sure if there were Collinses there. I believe they are all related, tho some may have been pretty distantly related by the time some of them migrated to NR. Louisa Co seems to b a common link between them all. R u familier with Phineas Bunch, the pirate? Many NR Melungeons claimd families were involved in piracy off Carolina coast. Some believe that's where Vardy got his money.
klmullins65 3 years ago
I've been talking with a gideon Gibson descendant alot lately..I was showing him how his gibson was associated with the Bunch family and the Collins of Bertie and was showing him how they are connected with Newman's ridge families. I've not studied Phineas Bunch yet...but I'll check that in a minute. My recent research has been on the NC coast...once I figured out the Bertie county familes was related I started seeing more stuff :)

Btw, are u a Goins? I assumed you were refering to Goins when u said that Africans were here a long time before slavery because u wrote "Goins" underneath.
klmullins65 3 years ago
if you read "Will Allen Dromgoole's" article of her stay at the ridge in 1890....you'll will understand.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago
Dromgoole did more to spread misinformation than anyone else when it comes to Melungeons. The bad part is that when newspapers and magazines do pieces on Melungeons, her articles (she did abt 3 or 4, let me know which one you have, and I can send you the others) are still used as primary sources. One exmpl is when she wrote that JnSevier discovered them in the mts, but nobody has ever found proof. In N.R. they refered to her as "Will Allen Damfool".
klmullins65 3 years ago
I have all the articles....I find some things useful in her articles. Her articles tend to get weirder though...like her first one she seemed cool....but then she started actually seeming racist toward them.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago

Vivomoja 3 years ago
we have always claimed tribal affiliation. we did not get the black blood (not all of us have black blood) until newman's ridge. And no we have never used the Muslim religion.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago
Melungeons are by far mostly "white". Most people called Melungeon claimed they were white, with an Indian and/or Portuguese ancestor. If you called somebody a Melungeon a few years back, you would have been knifed, shot, or assaulted.
klmullins65 3 years ago
yes...melungeon is actually a very insulting word in old days terms...just as the n word.
Monasukapanough 3 years ago
When I go to Newmans Ridge, I'm careful not to mention the "m" word unless somebody else brings it up first. It's mostly the older folks who dont like it, and it's more from the word's implications than it's meaning. Because nobody knows what it means. There's alot of evidence emerging that the word may have been used as a political slur early on, especially by the Whig Party. They'd slander opponents by calling them mongrels and "eboshins", whether racial mixture was true or not.
