There is no one to beat Bruce. OK, the guy is a milionaire, but who cares. He has earned every dime. When he makes these songs, it comes right from his heart. The unsung hero for me is always Max Weinberg. He never makes a mistake and the guy has gone through several wrist operations. "Born in the USA" was mainly made by him. Bruce just said:"give me a beat" and he did give The big Beat. I' ve sen the band in 2008 in Helsinki. The best gig I've ever seen. Lasted about 3hours and 30 min. At 29 C.
now that's a real music... all those so called "musicians"nowdays, who make they "music" only by singing about sexy asses or fuckin' another bitch will never be able to compare with someone as great as Bruce is : ) true emotions, passion... you can feel it so much even by watching this on youtube... I can't even imagine how it was like to be there and see it live : )
@Bugattiman1011 Saw this on tour several times and Nils' solo was the highlight each night. I shook my head at the masses heading for the bathroom. They had no idea.
I`m 39years now and started to play guitar from age of 15. Still this Nils Lofgrens solo is not from this planet. He´s talking to God or something with that unique gift one in a billion. Couple years ago I heard this here in Finland in Helsinki and I almost bursted to tears, this takes you speechels for a moment. Technique and improvising is almolst impossible to understand which hand is doing those harmonics and benging and which order. Also great melody, arr. , E-Street and Boss
When will US workers stop fighting each other over race, gays and god, and instead ban together to make the economy serve us, instead of us serving the economy. "Those big boys" have got us divided just the way they like it.
@sophiesage I love Nils solo on this song. Just so powerful. Couple that with Bruce's voice. This is a true testament to the spirit of the working American that Reagan's America forgot
@sophiesage Yeah, but let's face it. Nils is no Eddie Van Halen. That's quite easy to play if U have palyed guitar for 30 years. Ed is one of my favorites. Doesn't make this solo any worse.. It is the freakin' band that makes this so good.
This song represents everything about where our nation came from. It also paints a picture, respecting the hard working women and men, who did nothing more than try to provide for their families. When the day was done, the day was done.
This song get`s under my skin! Never thought, its possible to convey such a feeling by singing a song about this. Not bad!! Gratulation to the BOSS and his staff!!!!!!
Of course I meant the great E-Street-Band, would say something like "his team". Never in my life I would offend the only band, which whole members I know by name. I´m buying a better dictionary!!!
Yo BIGCHINASEAN the DICKHEAD. These are Springsteen brothers from other lands. Appoligise now dick, or i'll get nasty. Let me say 'sorry' 4 this section of the USA, they didn't graduate High school or their mothers beat'em. See, don't get me started Mr Bigchinasean, just say what u have 2 say...
Everyone... The more I listen to this song the more it reminds me of small town America, Canada , Europe and everywhere else where we have "one horse towns". I can't stop thinking of where I grew up everytime I listen to this song!
I grew up in a Northern Ontario City called Sudbury Ontario. When I listen to this song it reminds me of home. We were a mining city with Interntional Nickel once employing as many as 25,000 employees in the mid to late 70's. Today less than 3500. I draw so many comparisons between this song and my home town!
@beltonmarty As a California resident, Bruce opened my mind up to the world of the Back east blue collar working man just like Robert Johnson opened my mind up to the world of the Delta sharecropper. Bruce has the true American Spirit and God Bless him for it
Great comments here, but I wish more people would talk about the lyrics...it really is ashame what greed has done to this great country...cities like Ytown have been destroyed by the great of big companies...all to the detriment of the working man, and our gov't hasn't given a shit about it....thank you Bruce for trying to stand up for all of us.
True. I don't live in Yongstown. Not even in the US, but even here on the other side of the atlantic ocean I understand the problem you got over there. 'Cause it's a problem here in Europe too that big companies destroy towns and ruin the hard working men and women. Hope Obama do something about this. It's the worker who needs to get honored, not his boss.
It's nice how Bruce always sing for the prey, never the hunter. (<--- Get my point?)
I agree, we went too far in that type of policy, and now , we are making up for it by going a bit too far the other direction w/ gov't bailouts of the banksters that put us into this worldwide recession...IMO, there needs to be a good mix, the gov't shouldn't be bailing companies out, and yet, they should strongly regulate business so that workers and consumers aren't taken advantage of...
Bruce, if you for some strange reason read this...
Please play this in Stockholm Sweden the 2. night! This is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. Maybe this is the best song ever written in this world!
i live in youngstown oh... hes talking about the rise and decline of our steel mills.... youngstown (the mahoning valley) used to be one of the biggest steel producers next to pittsburgh... used to have a population of 170,000 people in the city. now its down to 73,000, which doesnt sound like a lot, but its a big city, its just theres so much crime and drugs that no one wants to live in the actual city.. its a dangerous place to live.. i love my city, and i hear it used to be great
I love Bruce's music so much, however I didn't like The Ghost of Tom Joad. It was just TOO different, I like Bruce's more powerful, upbeat rock songs. This song is awesome though.
Now go and listen to the original under this title...(Springsteen "Youngstown" Montage) and you will hear the subtlety of that version I refer to and hear how effective it is without that solo.
Excellent Springsteen. Born and raised near Youngstown, I watched the city die a cancerous death. Through the falling of the steel mills and the closing of doors, it never made it back and probably never will. Great rendition of the fall of a great city!
Need he be mentally challenged to feel that way? I appreciate his guitar work, but as an ENORMOUS fan of the original version I feel that they lost the song in this version. Especially so in the solo.
Hey I appreciate you seeing my perspective on the solo. Even as a fan that doesn't mean every note, vocal, beat etc has to be liked. It tells a story larger than the song doesn't it? There is pain in his voice, there is pain in our nation now.
What about the election? Are we screwed or what? Who will you vote for? It is like "pick the best of the worst" isn't it?
Good luck to all of us and remember the truth is here somewhere.
We have all become Youngstown, a thing of pain and regret.

Also in my top ten, for sure!
Nils Löfgren has some serious skills, just listen to those harmonics.
-PS Mr. Springsteen does a very nice job as well =)

This is the best version I've ever heard of this song. Lofgrens guitar solo is amazing! Thank you Springsteen for giving me goosebumps all over!

This Nils solo is technically brilliant. When he and Max are jamming together the notes are flying out of his guitar like bats out of a cave!
