Another interesting take on Frere Jacques: apparently as a child Mahler would flee outside when his abusive father beat his mother. Once, when escaping the aweful reality inside, he heard a musical group pass playing a light hearted folk song. Therefore, the light hearted fun of folk songs became like a dark twisted irony.
You've got to have some talent to take such an innocent folk song and twist it around to make it this powerful. Amazing. Also, I'm no bassist but it must be extremely difficult to get the intonation on that solo perfectly, so I don't blame him on that one.
this song is inspired by how almost all of mahlers siblings died of illnesses. his favorite brother died a long slow painful death and mahler was there the whole time. learned about it in school. depressing huh
@miepdetruus it's called the huntman's funeral by Moritz von Schwind, it was very popular to all austrian children because it was included in a book of old fairy tales! :)
According to the wikipedia article on this symphony, in the last paragraph of Structure section, that's just how the song (which Mahler referred to as "Bruder Martin") was sung in Austria at the time, and was not an invention of his. It has two citations, but neither reference is directly available online.
@Lutekbutek no. Listen to any recording of this. There will almost always be some sort of intonation issue with that high range. plus, the solo in the beginning is not supposed to be filled with expression, hense the idea of the funeral procession.
This movement represents the funeral procession of a hunter by all of the animals. They are all pretending to be sad when they are really happy that the hunter is dead. That is why Frere Jacques is used in a minor mode; because of its absurdity......
@mathes107 Frère Jacque was sung in a minor key in Austria at the time, which is where Mahler got the minor key from. I don't know if that's true, but that's what I know about the song.
@senbonmaster103 You're very correct. In the German-speaking areas of Europe the tune was traditionally in the minor (which is appropriate as the song is thought to be about a plague-victim by some) and known as Bruder Martin (Brother Martin).
@mathes107 I think the actual interpretation of this movement is the death of a child. The whole of the 1t symphony represents life as a whole; 1) Dawn, Birth 2) Pastoral village and family life 3) Death, Funeral march 4)Rage, anger, overcoming and triumph. The Frere Jacques motif is used perhaps more likely to symbolize the high child mortality rate of Mahler's Times.
I've always loved this song. Heard it first when I was in sixth grade, shown by my teacher. So beautiful! I like this version better than the other. xD simply because It's prettier and I'm just a morbid person.
It's so harsh, cynical... But yet, beautiful. And so strange to hear Frère Jacques, this childhood song, through this movement.
I understand why Mahler was hated but I can only love his art.

un de mes mouvements favoris... si triste, sinistre... et cette mélodie joyeuse qui sors comme ça au milieux... Mahler est un vrai génie.

I thought that Frere Jacques was used in the minor because he was remembering his son that had died and was an expression of great sadness.

Hmm, so this is a variation of Frère Jacques? I imagine the original composer of Frère Jacques is unknown seeing as it's a folk song.

Search up Christoph Eschenbach's video with the Orchestre de Paris. No intonation issues there.

Most likely due to the size of the venue...
This looks as though the orchestra is playing in a church/small theatre!
Despite this, it still sounds amazing.
