My dad had to drive a hay wain like this on his half-brother's farm when he was like 12 or so -- Back then, hay balers were uncommon, and expensive and the hay was commonly put into the barn loft loose. Tractors were very expensive too, my Dad said -- This was before WW2.

I am calling BS on the Amish here. They are using technology that is 50 years old, but refusing to use modern equipment? In 50 years they will be using today's equipment? Why wait? That old diesel power-unit is way dirtier and less efficient than anything "modern". The horse-drawn balers you see on Youtube have engines inside the baler. They aren't powered by the baler-wheel. You all should come to Iowa for a steam show or similar event. Heck come volunteer a day.

@Plum369 Each amish community has different rules to what they consider an exception in technology for them to use. Some drive cars but it has to be all black. Some have community phones in case of emergencies to call the cops or ambulance. Others do not allow any exceptions at all.

Why spend $4 a gallon on gas (more for diesel) powered heavy machines, when you can use a horse that can do just about any kind of job you put in front of it? That, in my opinion, is more "retarded" than paying a few grand for a tractor that'll break down in a few years, after putting in a couple million dollars of fuel and parts into it. Just remember, history has this nasty habit of repeating itself. Draft horses have been used for farming/logging since 3,000 B.C. Don't judge the wise Amish

A bit like the old man, he likes to make jobs twice as hard as they need be for no reason as well...! Why not just take the baler round the field behind a tractor and be done with it? If the Amish object to "modern" technology, why aren't they living in caves and throwing stones at wild animals? All technologies are "modern" at some time
