All the nasty comments in the world can't undo what Sly has done for music and for helping bridge the gap between black and white, man and woman....and he did it by IGNORING the whole racism thang and doing it the HUMAN way, not the television way....You put a black baby and a white baby in a room, and they'll play together like brothers.....until their world tells them there IS a difference, they don't even see it...the media keeps racism alive...
Check out 'Sly Stone sues his former manager' video here on YouTube and maybe you will get a better understanding of why Sly is where he's at now. GET YOURS SLY!
What I've noticed and learn is that people who enter entertainment never leave it the same. Fame can bring out the worse and best in you. If you get to caught up, situations like Sly can be the result or worse
Look what drugs can do to you, Sly is now broke and homeless. He sold all the right to his music for a million dollars to Micheal Jackson. All that talent gone to waste.
why is it sad. he seems like he's enjoying himself. he wouldnt have been so funky with out all his drugs. and he's not homeless. wtf. i dont think his family would let that happen. he chooses to live in his rv. you people are something else. this is how stupid rumors start.
He is one of the tragic stories of great music. He is a living advertisement for anti-drug use. One of the legends of rock and roll, although still here, really is gone.
Give Sly a break. The man broke his neck that's why he hold's it the way it does and those painkillers can be addictive. Besides him be wasted from the past and old age. He revaled all this on the Stone & Digital show!
I bought the essential Sony 2cd collection thinking it would have some good stuff... The first disc was all the radio greats, but the real thick funk on the second disc floored me.
Man, give me a break guys. What do you want from him? He's only human. So he slouches a little and doesn't make sense. He did tons of drugs, just like evrybody else, and he's been around for ages. You think you'd be better? Ha!
I used to love and still do love this guy for what he was and will musically always be. However, I do not love the ramblings and abstract behaviour of what he is today. Genius is well understood.............but as Rick James said..."cocaine is a helluva drug". Sly, I will always love you for what you were, I just can't understand or related to who you are today. Peace and thank you for some of the funkiest memories. You and James Brown made me pick up a guitar and play.
Even he not look that good as he was but he music still the best of all . Love U Sly hope U will get back on your feet and Get down with your good Sing a sample song . Mike XM
Bottom Line.....Sly is the MAN!!!!!!!! It is what it is ..... He's a trend setter, professional and a serious humble musician....living legend. High or not Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart is a humble man that will not air dirty laundry. We all should follow that example.
I'm looking forward to seeing the complete documentary. If there wasn't a Sly, there would not be a Prince. Sly's genius was the prototype for all that followed.
SMH! There are very very few funk legends still living and in tip-top shape. The first to come to mind is Sly's former bandmate and an innovator himself, Mr. Larry Graham. He seems ageless. What does he attribute to his "life" success?
This is an embarrassment to his parents KC and Alpha Stewart. They were Christians and their son is nothing more than a second rate junkie who has wasted his entire life on drugs and stupidity. I hope he comes to his right mind and accepts Jesus as his personal savior before it is too late. If anyone reads this, please pray for this lost man. It is so obvious to anyone with two brain cells that he does not even realize that he is a dead man walking.
@drmorrisj Fuck you, you bible thumping, jesus loving freak. Sly Stone is one of the greatest songwriters and singers of our generation. He showed that music has no race, no color, just soul. It's true that drugs ruined his mind, but fuck off with that personal savior bullshit. This is about music, not religion.
@cheifguggletram So true.He was the greatest and still is the greatest. He lived his life how he wanted.Goood or bad to others. He was his own man.Everytime I listen to any of his music I feel like getting High.(Bud.)
Yours are very harsh words. I'm not sure I can make out everything Sly says here, but I can't hear anything that warrants God's damnation. Please remember than this man was a visionary, a poet of love&peace, which really happened whenever people danced to him & his band. Think how disillusioned with humanity must this man be, seeing today's squalid, materialist society & popular art in comparison to the promise of the 60s. As far as drugs go, the biggest problem is their illegality
@kidcalabria It always amazes me how people focus so much on a man's shortcomings to the point of neglecting his contributions and genius. And, how people always invoke "God" when condemning others. One would think that people would have more compassion and understanding, especially if they are invoking God. In general, most people don't have the ability to understand Sly or his music. It will take a tremendous shift consciousness in order to embrace Sly's words and messages.
I agree. Didn't remember my comment & when I first read yours I thought for a second that you were referring to me. The shift in cosciousness that you mention is what Rock&Roll, especially in the '60s, is all about. I think Sly Stone is a genius, & a man who did that music can't be all bad, as a person, I mean. He belongs to an handful of people who - whatever people say - changed the world, 'cause they changed individuals's consciousness... well, mine for sure.
You know what's so sad about Sly Stone? He probably knows how fucked up he is but he could care less. But give him his props. Before the drugs and alcohol destroyed his brain Sly Stone was one beautiful cat.
You can always see the Johnny 'Guitar' Watson in Sly. He was heavily influenced by this man. God bless the child that has his own. Sly owned his style and talent. Sly gave so much to funk and soul. He is really a legend and everyone who knows music, or has even tapped their feet to a simple song should know Sly's name. I feel sorry for those who don't. You don't know what you're missing.
Thanks for taking this project on. I can't have been easy!
I so look forward to seeing it in full. Sly's music has always shaped how I feel and make music. (and it's great to see he's STILL referencing Lord Buckley!!!)
with out a doubt this guy was a man way way ahead of his time however destroyed his life and everyone around him because of drugs he should have cleaned up before it went to this point
regardless of what one thinks about drug use and abuse....the man is a soul music legend! I'm glad to see the he is still performing! God bless you Sly!
You know it grieves my heart to see him looking so worn out and burned out. But never forget what he and that band gave to the world. I've been LOVING that music for over 40 years now (and I saw Sly and the Family in concert). I wish someone could just take that man and heal him for a little while longer. But regardless he has done GREAT things. And I salute him.
That is Sly doing LORD BUCKLEY!!! He would open his KSOL a.m. radio show nightly at 7p.m. with THE NAZZ. I have waited for this movie for some 40 years. I don't think Sly is "wasted".... he was always beyond the basics.
Sly was a genius that was all about peace and harmony. He inspired so many people. To see how he has thrown away so much because of drugs leaves me unbearably sad. He still had so much more to give. He lost it somewhere along the way. Total shame.
tommiexander you're an idiot. His music still influences many of the top artists today. Let me ask you this... What have you done that's so spectacular? Are fans lining up to see you? Get off of your high horse moron, don't pretend you are an authority on music. If you were then you wouldn't be wasting time posting comments like this, go find something better to do. Out of the top one hundred albums off all time Sly has four of them; more than any other artist. He's still a genius.
Exactly. Sly was the man back in the day. But now he is a shell of himself, to say the least. And it's sad to see him this way. But he is still trying to act like he is still the man, with that big ego that he has. Yes he is in denial that the days of the superstar funkmaster, Sly Stone, is no longer there.
@boutirr Man "shut the fuck up" just like Sly said in the beginning of this clip. Sly is doing his thang and is a real cool brother. Chill with all nonsense and hate. Where is all this ego you talkin about? The man said he's just glad that a nigga his age can get out and do his thing. That sounds like GRATITUDE, not ego. "Shut the fuck up"
@boutirr what makes you so sad? He's happy. He's still playing. He's still making his money. Whats the problem? Why does he have to be a mega star? And fuck the church.. why you want to divide people even more so than they are already divided?
Man, I cannot wait to see this film. Is Sly a survivor? I dunno, but his spirit sure lives on. Great to see new footage of him 'cause we all age - if we live that long.... Unfortunately his 'best friend' the 'killer writer' Jim Ford did not live out '07. Wondering if there will be any references to that funky red-haired soul buddy who's featured in the collage of the Riot lp.
I think the mere fact that Sly has out lived some entertainers (Jimi, Janis, Arthur Lee, Rick James, John Lennon, Elvis Presley,Syd Barrett, etc.), who in my opinion didn't do nearly as much drugs as Sly did, is the mark of a survivor in my book. Remember, this is the same guy who allegedly once dumped his whole face in a sandpile of cocaine, consuming it like it was going out of style. Not to mention he's allegedly still using (as sad as that is to say). Let's face it, the man has 9 lives.
I hope the film "explains" to the audience how his music continued to move, developing new ideas, approaches, genres of music. MUSICALLY, he is incredible...as well as in every other respect.
.....sLy RESPECT lOng lOng LOng overdO,,,,,,,alllllllll hail the real king of alllll MUSIC,,,,black/white/purple/orange/red,, and on and on and on,,,,allll POSITIVITY..
re drugs: on one of their gigs, a police officer was carrying his guitar case...and according to one of the bandmembers, if it had fallen open, he would have been put in a jail cell so deep....about 100K of drugs.....but I love his music, still play it nearly day and I'm his age
I didn't know Sly until I heard that Michal Jackson loved his music. He seems very talented person. I was surprised to hear what's happening to him now. I hope everything will work out for him.
Wow, glad I went that night and got to tell my Sly encounter! Tried to sneak in the side door, a pretty, sweet, younglady stopped me, waited in line to get in, same pretty girl collecting the money at the door, 30 minutes later, same pretty girl now on stage singing(good) fronting band! Someone whispers to me, "isn't Slys daughter great!"....oh yeah and multi talented too!
I was born in the early 80s and have been playing funk/blues since my teens.. i've only listened to Sly and the Family Stone this week and realized that the sound I've been hearing in so many artists are rooted in his music i hope this will get a lot of young listeners to go back and listen to his music that has been emulated by the music industry over and over again..
i know it's really sad that i've never encountered Sly till now, but I never had the resources growing up to buy music and was too young to know who is the Truth..this man should be literally wealthy as a real King because he gave birth to a nation of Funk and Soul in contemporary music.. i think everyone needs to pay him lots and lots of royalties.

Out of the top one hundred albums off all time Sly has four of them; more than any other artist. He's still a genius.

I love Sly too much to see him like this!!
It hurts
HE WAS ONE OF THE GIANTS OF FUNK!
JAMES BROWN WAS THE OTHER..
JAMES CAME BACK FROM THE HOLE..
SLY IS IN MAJOR DENIAL..EGO BASED ON PAST GLORY..
GO TO CHURCH SLY!!!
boutirr 2 years ago 12
Yeah,
He should've hung with Al Green ,not George Clinton!
God gave him the funk!
Al Green knows that!
One of the greatest geniuses of all times acts like that?
Ray Charles sure didn't!
Thanx for the great music anyway brother..
I miss the healthy SLY

Exactly. Sly was the man back in the day. But now he is a shell of himself, to say the least. And it's sad to see him this way. But he is still trying to act like he is still the man, with that big ego that he has. Yes he is in denial that the days of the superstar funkmaster, Sly Stone, is no longer there.
tommiexander 2 years ago
@boutirr Man "shut the fuck up" just like Sly said in the beginning of this clip. Sly is doing his thang and is a real cool brother. Chill with all nonsense and hate. Where is all this ego you talkin about? The man said he's just glad that a nigga his age can get out and do his thing. That sounds like GRATITUDE, not ego. "Shut the fuck up"
SuperHighlife25 1 year ago 2

MUSICALLY, he is incredible...as well as in every other respect.

re drugs: on one of their gigs, a police officer was carrying his guitar case...and according to one of the bandmembers, if it had fallen open, he would have been put in a jail cell so deep....about 100K of drugs.....but I love his music, still play it nearly day and I'm his age

I was born in the early 80s and have been playing funk/blues since my teens.. i've only listened to Sly and the Family Stone this week and realized that the sound I've been hearing in so many artists are rooted in his music i hope this will get a lot of young listeners to go back and listen to his music that has been emulated by the music industry over and over again..
xleeca 2 years ago 5
i know it's really sad that i've never encountered Sly till now, but I never had the resources growing up to buy music and was too young to know who is the Truth..this man should be literally wealthy as a real King because he gave birth to a nation of Funk and Soul in contemporary music.. i think everyone needs to pay him lots and lots of royalties.
